I made a knife sheathe like this back when I was in college using corrugated cardboard and denim which I sewed together rather than gluing. I then used it as my scuba knife sheathe and while the cardboard is weak to water, the fabric can hold it together so while it's not properly waterproof it can survive being submerged for 30-60 minutes during a dive and when it dries it forms to the blade kind of like leather.

It works better with pu leather and gray cardboard that's how I make the scabbards for my mild steel trainers

Tip for the "craft foam" (so used to calling it what it is, Eva foam, craft foam feels wrong), anyway you can get 6×2 foot rolls for roughly 10-16 dollars plus shipping from TNT cosplay in whatever thickness you prefer, for this I'd reccomend a 4-6mm, I'm preparing to make one for myself. Also get an extendable hobby knife and a good sharpener, Kershaw is what I use, sharpen it after every cut, a heat gun is a must if you want that leather texture put directly into the foam using the foil method no you cannot use a hair dryer, if you've got a Dremel great that'll help you blend seams and round over edges to just add that extra touch to your finished piece. And then you have the freedom to paint and weather it to your content, and someone asked yes you should be able to rivet foam depending on density though I'd reccomend gluing it (contact cement is best) then adding a faux rivet on top. This is my hobby I obsess over so that's why it's so long, hope it was helpful to somebody if not our lovely boy on screen.

If you coat cardboard in ducktape and then knock it around a bit it actually starts to look like leather 👍

Pretty cool build. Might try it as an inexpensive addition for my ren fair outfit this year .Dont know if you mentioned it or not, but when gluing the cardboard to the fleece, you can wrap your sword in plastic to avoid damaging your sword

Neat! I sent your "First LARP Sword" video to a couple friends who are planning on buying a couple LARP swords. Once they've gotten theirs, I'll have to ask them if they want to watch this video as well.

Most definitely would like to see a foam scabbard made! I have a LOTR sword collection and need a scabbard for my Sting replica, and my Glamdring Replica

I made a couple of scabbards from corrugated cardboard and felt. My swords were made of wood. I just cut open a large box, laid down the sword, sketched out the shape around the then tapped it together with Gorilla Tape. I took the felt and placed it over the scabbard with the sword inside. I then took a large hot glue gun and applied the glue to the scabbard an inch or two at a time stretching the felt and smoothing down as I went. When the felt was scabbard was completely covered it then painted it black. The felt I had was bright red with silvery highlights (not the look I wanted), so I painted it with black acrylic paint. The swords was a little large to carry on my waist so I took an old belt, cut it in half, hot glued and stapled the cut ends to the top and bottom of the scabbard and now have a back hanger

I have to admit, I got thoroughly confused trying to follow along with you. I think this is much more complicated than I expected. I’m impressed that you were able to do this. Honestly I think it’s too complicated for me to attempt, which is sad.

I'd love to see a video of you doing this with the painted craft foam you were talking abour, would we still be able to add thread and rivets to give it a more leather like look? Great video, thank you for the content!

This is late and random lol but I use craft foam to mimic leather and I use rivets thread etc looks totally real :)

If you need a large sheet of paper for the pattern, buy that cheap holiday paper now on the roll. The backside is pale enough to draw on, and the roll is long enough for a zweihander. Great for long clothing pattern pieces, too.

So, in my preparation for the next Reckoning LARP event, I got myself my first larp sword. SO I will be back here to assist in me building a scabbard for it! Huzzah! It's also a mytholon weapon but I don't know if it's a hybrid one or not. If it is, I'll let you know so you can snag one yourself

I just made a scabbard from left over tin from a roofing job. Then I glued leather on it and it came out fairly ok. It's for looks. Practically, it is garbage. I bought a cheap saber and cut off the hand guard because it resembles a cossack shashka, but WAY cheaper. The sheath was some Chinese cloth garbage and will not be suitable for the medieval fair.
