It's actually a beautifully structured place; just clean the streets and fix broken pavements, what a difference that alone would make

I used to live in Kapteijn Street, Hillbrow in the mid-1980s, just around the corner from where you did most of your filming. Loved it there. Frequently I'd go out for a wander around in the evenings to Kotze and Pretoria Streets, to go to the record shops, bookshops, restaurants, bars, nightclubs, etc. Lots of nice places to go. A great atmosphere and clean and well maintained and most importantly safe. Looking at it now in your video and "dropping in" with Google Maps it looks a mess - a very sad shadow of what it once was. Maybe one day it can be turned around into the awesome and fun place that it used to be, and I hope so but it would take an enormous amount of work and determination. Completely agree with what others have said here - it has huge potential

Hillbrow has a potential to be a great city again. If all the hijacked buildings can be reclaimed, renovated or replaced and the municipality fix the water leaks, streets and plant trees. From your video, I don't see the reason why this area was left to decay like this. Thanks to all the owners, NGOs, and the community who strive to make Hillbrow a better place. Thanks David for the video.

I used to live there in the 80s and early 90s . If you need a security team to walk there , then that summarizes the whole place . The only solution for that slum would be to evacuate it , bulldoze it and rebuild . What a shame and disgrace , it used to be such a cool place .

Being someone who spent a lot of time in Hillbrow in the 90's it breaks my heart to see it so run down and neglected by the people who took it over. Such a shame.

I'm in the States. My mother was from South Africa, from Jo'Burg. I remember traveling there several times when I was a kid back in the 70s to visit relatives. It was really a great city back then. It's totally trashed now.

As someone who lives there, it's pretty cool really. It's not as scary as people like to make it seem. It's just like any other neighborhood in JHB, just don't be an idiot and walk alone at night☠

My own experience in Gauteng. When LS happens we can go for one week at least at certain hours (normally 2 hours) and then we have a normal functional grid for months without any issue.

David is naïve when asking, “ why do people drop a vase on the sidewalk, and not clean it up”? This is a great story and I wish them tons, but this two anglo dudes who by their very evolved backgrounds Know to clean up and make any place look decent and civilized. In the US, blacks would chase them out of the neighborhood as “gentrifies”. When the City of Johannesburg turned down funding for the Art Museum, that was the final mail in the coffin of any future. The woman with the turban can’t speak English so to answer David’s question of how she may be enjoying Hillbrow.
