My mom taught us since young not to buy/use things if can't afford it, regardless whether it's luxury or not. I don't use fake and only buy luxury items when I can afford it. It's a sense of achievement when I buy it with my hard-earned money.

As a design student I used to get very fired up about stealing ideas. But recently I've been thinking about how, in a way, it's a totally modern concept. For example, no one knows exactly how the process of distilling alcohol or making gunpowder came to be, it's assumed to have originated in China, but eventually became a part of "human" knowledge via trade. Or, if it was desirable to own an item from a specific artisan/master, it's because their skill and use of material was unparalleled, as in - they could show exactly what and how they did, and there wouldn't be another person capable of replicating it. As you pointed out, fakes used to be extremely bad and obvious, but with the rise of the so called super fakes, ones that match the material and assembly quality exactly or even better than the original, it shatters the facade of the original manufacturers, that they and they alone possess access to the skill and materials required to create the item in question. In a way, all ideas eventually reach the state of public domain, and trying to fight it with copy right laws is... futile. It used to be that if you wanted to hear a piece of music, you either had to go to a live concert, or learn to play it yourself. Illegal downloading is a symptom of modern technology and the best way to fight it is to make the original as cheap as possible, so that trying to illegally download a movie or album is actually not worth the effort. I think luxury brands raising prices as drastically as they have, in the last few years especially, have driven the rise in popularity of fakes. If a Chanel CF cost 2k as it would adjusted for inflation when it was released, people wouldn't bother with a super fake that cost 1k. Another interesting fact is that copying was encouraged by even the most famous designers - Cristobal Balenciaga would copy Parisian designers, in fact, Madame Gres would share her patterns with him. There was no gatekeeping of ideas, because there was mutual respect and the notion that there is enough business for everyone. Also, the European factories that produce luxury goods often use illegal immigrants from North Africa and Asia, who work in very poor conditions and have no rights if anything happens to them (there are multiple documentaries on the subject available on youtube too). Luxury houses are also notorious for treating interns and models horribly, paying junior designers very poorly, stealing from indie designers and monopolizing the manufacturing and marketing processes. LVMH and Kering etc have very likely participated in aggressive takeovers and put small companies out of businesses... So, immoral practices are everywhere, but there's only so much that we can pay attention to, thus our outrage too is inevitably biased. Luxury houses, like the rich bored women of NY, seem to be very good at distracting the public from any sketchy practices of their own. It's all very interesting - memetics and virtue signaling... Meredith, I am so sorry for this incredibly long comment! I've just been thinking about this for a long time. Beneath a seemingly frivolous topic like handbags, there are many philosophical ideas :).

When I was in law school in Los Angeles in the late 2000s, I volunteered to help people with labor disputes. While there are people who try to break the rules even in big companies or people they subcontract, if it is a legally operated business mistreated workers can come forward, including undocumented workers in Los Angeles. However, when workers are working on inherently illegal activities (like creating and selling fakes, selling or making drugs, etc), they have no remedies. They cannot seek recourse. Illegal business operations inherently allows for exploitation of workers, destruction of the environment, and lack of accountability for faulty or misrepresented goods. We have well developed and ever evolving laws in the U.S. to help with the protection of creation and design. There is a big spectrum of design that can be inspired by versus direct copies, and there is big difference in ethics. If we do not provide people to reap the financial and other benefits of creating new (design, technology, etc), less will be created over time. You can see it in countries that do not offer these protections.

Becoming as good as the original creator and making your own copy is fine. But why are you putting the original creator’s logo on it and trying to pass it off as theirs? If yours is just as good, then sell it as such. There is no excuse for pretending “lying” about being the real thing.

Also, the bottom line is the Chinese is outsourcing all the work they are taking work away from the Italian and French people. They are under bidding everyone I just watched a documentary where people went undercover and YSL and Gucci items which are supposed to be ethically made, and all that there’s ways around it even at the leather tanneries and things people are getting abused, so it starts with the brands needing to make their own products! That’s why I think the fakes I’ve gotten so good because they have access to all the technology all the materials and they’ve been working on this for 20 or 30 years they have perfected it they don’t appreciate fashion they don’t appreciate the heritage of the brands or the legacy they do not love fashion like us Meredith ❤

From someone that worked in fashion for 34 years I’ve seen a lot…real, fakes & so on… just to make it clear I don’t buy fakes but I’ve definitely seen a few and they are not made by 3 yr olds…these are very well made bags… to be honest if the person didn’t tell me it was a fake I wouldn’t have known…and as far as honesty in these big fashion houses well that’s gone down the toilet for me also… they haven’t made their billions from being honest…I worked as an SA..long hours… targets to meet…grumpy customers & crappy wages and I’m Australian so my thoughts 🤷‍♀️no judgement

I totally agree with you on this subject. I don’t want a fake or counterfeit Kelly. I like the style of the Kelly and I will never own a genuine Kelly unless someone gifts it to me or I win the lottery and Hermes offers me one. There are handbags that remind me of the Kelly made by other fashion houses but these companies don’t market their bag as a genuine Hermes Kelly. You are so right that the different brands are influenced by each other and that is okay. Selling a fake product and passing it off as the real thing is wrong. The fact that these counterfeiters are criminals who prey on the weak makes it even more despicable. Thank you for being so thorough in pointing out the hypocrisy and the lack of morals or compassion demonstrated by people who buy fake/counterfeit goods just to pass them off as genuine. Kudos, Meredith!

I've accidentally got a replica Kelly, it's not pretending to be Hermés, but when I bought it I was young, clueless and near the Happy Valley racecourse in Hong Kong. It was in a handbag shop not a stall in a market. I thought that's a nice basic leather bag. Since I realised what it was I have hardly worn it. But haven't thrown it out either. I don't wear it any place where someone might think I'm being a pretender. Truly I have to throw it out it's just inertia that keeps me hanging onto it.

I will be honest that I am newer to the “luxury community” and I have learned a lot in the last several months, watching videos, reading articles, and just doing my research. Before I became a part of this community, I would not have had a clue who Balenciaga was or anything that was happening with that company. You are so articulate! Totally agree with you on this subject. Thank you for sharing your perspective as a business owner with IP that you have worked hard on! I can’t even begin to imagine how incredibly frustrating and disheartening it must be to see people steal your IP and use it without your permission. And I agree, just because Hermès and Chanel are making billions, that does not entitle engine to profit off of their designs. Lifestyle creep is a real thing and can for sure happen at any income bracket. If those ladies publicly owned the fact that their bags are not authentic, that would be a different story (of course still bad because of everything that goes on in producing these fakes…). But this portraying of affluence and abundance and of a lifestyle that is not financially sustainable…just for clicks and views? I can not support that in any way.

I’ve seen all different types of quality. Some of my friends have fakes. I cannot tell the difference between my real and they’re fake scary! And yes, some of my friends are more wealthy than me and they buy replica. Thank you for your question. Large companies, especially those traded publicly must produce detailed financial documents for presentation to the board members and share holders. These are audited and detailed. So while we can't say with absolute complete certainty, it would be very hard for a company to hide dodgy practices under that kind of microscope.

Great points Meredith. 25:21 I would add that being a legal business creates some accountability (even if not publicly traded) that illegal businesses do not. This applies to a wide-range of issues, like employees being able to enforce labor laws, consumers being able to take action if a product is misrepresented, payment of taxes, environmental regulation and so on. A person or group making illegal products, like fakes in countries where they are illegal, are inherently not subject to following and enforcement of all laws regulating businesses and individuals.

I totally agree with you on all your opinions and views on this topic. Thanks for sharing the research you have found around this. I remember after Highschool I was invited to a ‘tupperware party’ and I was intrigued because no one would actually give me a straight answer through out the event. I kept trying to understand what and where these bags came from, and why they were all squished together into 5-6 tubs. Why they were priced so cheap, and why no one was talking about the quality of the handbag. Needless to say I did not buy anything, but I did not understand until later that day, after the event was over, I pulled someone aside and was like cut the BS, tell me are these real of fakes. She said “of course they are fake” I was shocked at how many of these girls were totally cool with spending $200-300 on these fake handbags. And encouraging others that this is the way to go. And making fun of others like myself that declined purchasing anything, because I was saving up for my first designer bag. The whole room laughed at me and called me a stupid girl, who has a lot to learn. And I kept my head high, and didn’t let it affect me. But moral of the story I’m trying to make it’s even worse now, than it was in the early 2000’s. Jasmin

Now, this is a very elaborate topic and very touchy to many people too! I'm not even getting into the "perfection" aka first copy whatever these fakes are made. The entirety of the "problem" is when ppl debate if one will come to know if its an original or fake. And THIS actually is the whole problem. It doesnt matter if someone comes to know if its a fake or a real one. Its equivalent to someone rocking a fake/artificial diamond on their ring. You cant always tell that either...and, No one cares. In my opinion when you wear something that is Fake , NOT DUPE ..but FAKE , you are offending/insulting the idea/originality/creativity of the person/persons who came out with the design, the idea and spend hours on it. Doesnt matter the price its going for in the market. We live in a globalised aggressive economy. No one is forcing anyone to buy any "luxury" item. Its your own desire. Also how derogatory and petty of anyone to say or think ''dont spend your hard earned money" on these items. In that case DON'T buy it period. Why buy it as a FAKE?? and portray that you are affluent or whatever . I do own few designer bags, I love the luxury of it, period. The day I feel i'm not loving it anymore, will be the end of it and beginning of non branded items, simple! xoxo 🙂🙃

There is a leather craftsman on KZbin who takes apart luxury bags and shows how little leather is used, how poorly the bags are made and how much the bag cost...it's usually under $300. Then the best part is he makes the bag he just destroyed in beautiful leather with perfect craftsmanship and charges less than $500. 😆 What I love is he shows that people are just buying for a label that these luxury items aren't luxurious at all. I think luxury shoppers prove that too, every time their new bag falls apart after no use. 🤗

Hi. I’m a bit confused because when I think of “Dupe” I think of the word duplicate. The definition of duplicate is….exactly like something else…copied. So a dupe means exact copy. The bag you showed on the screen for $49 that resembled Valentino would, to me, be considered an “ inspired by”. It’s your prerogative to spend your money how you choose. Thanks for sharing. 😊💕

People most certainly can spend their money any way they choose, however passing their fakes off as the real things shows how embarrassed they are by their own actions.

What if the "original" is the unethical? Where are our diamonds from? How about leathers - fur, exotic skins? I am in the believe that the only "ethical" leather comes as a side product from food industry (and yes, we can easily claim that any leather in unethical), so if an animal is killed just because of their skin, doesn´t it make the product unethical? Why are we against fur production even if the animals are well taken care of - because the animals are cute? Snake is also being killed for it´s skin. It doesn´t make a difference if the fur is recycled, it is still unethical, because of it´s origin. If I bought a zebra bag, that died in natural causes, I would be judged, because wild animals of limits. Btw, I don´t buy fakes, I own a snake bag, I own a zebra printed pony bag, I don´t know where my diamonds are from. Just raising up a few questions considering your comment, that we should be consistent on making judgements about what is ethical and what is not.
@livingluxwithmeredith

Animals are farmed in a sustainable way. I don't believe the farming of animals for their meat and skin is unethical unless the laws supports it being illegal (certain animals are endangered etc), or unless the farming does not meet the International regulations set out to ensure the animals are treated humanly. Therefore I believe the conversation around the use of animal skin is a personal belief one, not an ethical one.

@Living Lux with Meredith yeah but I dont see the same... contentions as I'm seeing with watches. I guess watches are a lot closer to other collectibles. Eg. Say some kind of super rare baseball card is only really cool if its real right? No point otherwise. Thats what I see most from the watch community. Excellent fakes exist, but it doesnt really scratch the market of real watches in terms of demand. And theres no external hand wringing, as in, people dislike fakes because they are fake. Not because some industry body says they are linked to terrorists.

Some good points Meredith but do we really know enough of what goes on behind closed doors regarding the products we buy. The laws of most countries are so old and grey, its only when things are brought to media attention that changes come about, and the general public get to hear the truth of business practices. For example, just after I watched your video, I did a quick read of an article published in Vogue Business titled 'Inside Hermes Where leather factories are still the future.' Oct 2021. As stated in the article, Hermes do not reveal what they pay their workers. The article even questioned whether they get as much as the minimum wage. Not very transparent. Business practice is only stepping up speed in my opinion as they are running scared of being exposed. I loathe everything that Hermes stands for and I am gobsmacked how and why people support them. They are neither honest nor transparent. Do they value their customers....nope. They have zero respect of how hard people work to earn the money just to buy a bag. Cannot understand how countries allow them to get away with it. For example, a young person may just love Levis jeans. Levis do not some sneaky business practice make that person purchase other Levi products before they are even in the running for the jeans they so lovingly want. Even after the ridiculous other spend there's still no guarantee that young person will score their jeans. Thats what Hermes do to hard working people. We do not all own businesses that through hard work might be successful enough to play the Hermes game. Some of us are mere public servants that work our butts off....I work in a hospital. I will never buy from Hermes until they start respecting people and are transparent with their customers. Little wonder they happen to be one of the richest family in the world. So no, I would never buy a fake product, but I also will never support any product that in some way blatantly abuses people good will and hard work, has zero values and is not transparent in their business dealings. Even the article you referred to was not transparent. I sometimes do wonder of how much of what we read is made up or not anywhere near the truth of the matter. Love you input on these types of topics. One last idea, if Hermes respected their customers maybe the people who buy their fakes would refrain through sheer respect of the brand. This could possibly be a slippery slope Hermes has created of their own doing.
@livingluxwithmeredith
@livingluxwithmeredith Жыл бұрын
I appreciate your thoughts on this and wonder if you have extended your research into other brands? Hermes is one of the last privately owned luxury companies in the world, most are publicly traded and therefore have to prepare financial reports that are audited and presented to board members and share holders. I can certainly see how Hermes could not have the same issues with transparency as other companies do.I myself have not undertaken any research on this topic, but am certainly open to exploring it.

When I served in the US Air Force I was stationed in South Korea it was a serious problem over there - people could anything they wanted made. It was crazy! Still I waited- when I paid my house off I rewarded myself with a Louis Vuitton and a Chanel bag.. both REAL! It felt great- and I now have many bags and love the real luxury experience- I am so happy I didn’t compromise my beliefs and waited for the real deal. Thanks for this!! Hundred percent agree with this video. One slight scrutiny I have is whether the argument the bags are made by children and/ or trafficked people still rings true especially with the presence of extremely well made Superfakes. Surely there must be some degree of skill and expertise to actually make these impeccable fakes. Understandably, these arguments are countered by the machinery, technology and the sheer necessity that the people making the bags are presumably forced to be an expert.

The real or fake conversation or debate will NEVER die. It used to be the fakes were very obvious to spot a mile down the road but now they look exactly like the real one: my collection pre dates social media so I’ve enjoyed the real thing over some years. But honestly speaking if someone wants to buy a replica I don’t care because the person knows what it is. I agree with you on the comment about “stupid”. It is not stupid to spend our own money on what makes us happy. But let me state for a fact that people judge real or fake largely based on who is carrying it, and I think that’s what the women in the article are standing on. There are young women in so called low socioeconomic neighborhoods carrying the REAL bags and they are judged in public as carrying fakes when they carry their bags to a mall. This whole fake vs real thing is ridiculous

Good points, I definitely agree. I have recently noticed that there is quite a few young ladies here on youtube who are trying to grow their audience by doing frequent unboxing videos of luxury items, multiple items in each unboxing. They even mentioned the name of the website they bought from but at first I thought it's one of the Asian resellers. Only after I clicked on one of the links they provided, I realised it's just a Chinese wholesaler selling fakes. I was very disappointed tbh... buying fakes to use them is one thing, but buying tonnes of them just to unbox and get a couple of views and encourage people to buy them too is so irresponsible... luckily youtube is going after those creators and taking down the unboxing videos. From what I heard instagram is doing that as well.

I haven’t bought any but yeah China has whole cities dedicated to luxury brands. They have all the tools and materials to make the bags they often times are making items for the luxury houses themselves. For instance, YSL has their shoes made in China by the same replica factories were talking about. They don’t consider the shoes replica, though they ship them back to Italy, where they have the other part of the shoe glued onto it and then they say it’s made in Italy ! There are all kinds of videos on KZbin about this undercover people going into factories I have never seen any children tho ?

I put my thoughts on Dayle's videos too! I agree whole heartedly. I have never and would never buy a fake. Even when I was unable to afford any luxury items and thought I might never be able to afford one I still did not buy a fake. My friends did and they were everywhere but I wanted the real thing or nothing. I wanted to earn my own money, and work hard to be able to buy the bag. I got teased and judged and called a snob from friends for not buying fakes and that made me even more resolute. I also hate the argument that the companies can afford it so it doesn't matter if they lose out due to the fake industry. No one should EVER steal from anyone else regardless of size of company etc. That is like saying you can break into someone's house and steal their things because they can maybe afford to replace or insurance will cover it!!!! NO!!!! It is not yours!!! I have never judged others for buying fakes even though I would never ever buy one myself. That is not because I support their choice but because I think they are able to make their own decisions and I don't think it is for me to dictate what they do. If asked, I would give my opinion on it though . Totally agree that those who buy fakes should own it!

@@livingluxwithmeredith I have a friend who has a £300 fake double flap and it looks real but she didn’t get the experience or have the cachet of actually owning that bag. By the way the wedding looked wonderful as did you❤️❤️

This is such an interesting topic. I’ve really enjoyed watching your video as well as Dayle’s. Just thinking about when I was in Asia, the markets and some stores are full of fake designer items and even the items that aren’t fakes come to think about it are more than likely made by the same criminal organisations. It changes your perspective when you start viewing bigger picture. I read a book last year on Bali crime/drug gangs and so many restaurants and bars are also owned and run by gangs, again thinking about it now some of which may be involved in producing these fake designer items. The world is a difficult place and I very much agree with you when you said, if you’re going to be outraged by Balenciaga you should be outraged by this too. Unfortunately I think a lot of people who buy fakes haven’t educated themselves on how these items are made and in some cases sadly don’t care as Dayle’s research showed.

Excellent video. I have admired luxury handbags for years for their craftsmanship and because they are a practical work of art that can elevate everyday life for the wearer. I don't own any luxury bags yet as it's never been in my budget, I hope to purchase an LV within the next couple of years. I would NEVER purchase a fake solely for the reasons you talked about, that the people making them are nearly always tied to organized crime and terrorism. I couldn't live with that.

I totally agree with you on this subject I love luxury handbags I am in my fifties and I just cannot afford a luxury handbag without putting it on a credit card and honestly I don’t want to do that I have to really think about what to s important to me and making sure that I can take care of my mom and my dogs are what I worry about tho most and yes I could go buy the cakes but I won’t so I stick to Marc Jacobs, Coach & Dooney & Bourke because that is what is in my budget but that does not stop me from dreaming about getting a Fendi Sunshine tote or a Louis Vuitton On The Go tote maybe I will get a card holder or a wallet someday but for me it just about the history and my love for the brands.

Thank you or sharing this with me. I think it's wonderful that you have beautiful items you love, and that you have your priorities. Of course the care of your mother and dogs are far more important than any luxury item ever would be. It seems that you have found a way to have the best of all worlds and be happy, which is all any of us could ever hope for.
