I used this area this weekend. Had to cut it short. Me and the wife went into town to look at a few things. When we came back two people parked there cars in our parking spot next to our camper. I was a little ticked off.
@LivingOurDreamNow4 жыл бұрын
Wow - Doesn't sound like good camper etiquette. Hope they were only there for a short visit and not trying to muscle in on your free camping spot. Thanks for watching! Hope all went well.

Did it appear most spots were taken on a weekend? I'd like to go up there this fall, but with the 4 hour drive from raleigh i'd like to make sure i have a good chance of getting one of those spots.

@@legestrom it wasn't bad. Busy for labor day weekend. They just parked in our spot while we were gone. Even though my camper was there setup.

Although we have purchased a pop-up camper. I kept our tent camping gear. This looks promising for a long weekend in the summer.

@LivingOurDreamNow3 жыл бұрын
I believe there is potable water available at the cabin along with restrooms. There is a stream near the cabin too, but atop the ridge water will be more difficult to find.

We usually camp out of our car, which is a Toyota Corolla. Would we have a problem with getting to these sites?
@LivingOurDreamNow3 жыл бұрын
There were two wheel drive cars on Old NC-105, but personally I wouldn't take anything with low clearance on that road. There were some deep ruts in the road that may be difficult to avoid. The road is wide enough for you to turnaround if you decide the road is too rustic for your vehicle. Hope this helps. Lou

@@LivingOurDreamNow Thank you, Lou. I appreciate the quick response and I sure appreciate you checking all these sites out and showing them to us! Happy Travels!

We just left there with our 26’ overland travel trailer and f-150. Had to have all sedan drivers turn around. We also needed to unhitch the truck. Youre supposed to go down this road one way so all the spaces allow exit only from one direction unless you can 7-8 point turn and overland to get out the way youve come. Came here to note that these roads are severely washed out even when dry. Some ruts are 3-in-a-row and 3 feet deep each here now (why the cars had to all turn around behind us). Will not be coming back for tent camping either. These spots are almost all pocket spots and not open enough time allow any nice space or views like you see in this video. They are also extremely uneven and studded full of large round boulders. High clearance is necessary like this guy says. Definitely a no if youre worried about getting someone out in case of a medical emergency.

Sounds like you were on the southwest end of this route. None of the campsites shown in this video were on the southwest portion of Old NC 105. Access as shown in the video.
@asellars3 жыл бұрын
Any water sources along that route? (not hookups but streams)
@LivingOurDreamNow3 жыл бұрын
Recommend you check around the information cabin area. This is before the ascent and you'll have a better chance of finding stream water. Can't remember if there was a fresh water fill at the cabin area. Most of the campsites in this video are on a ridge and hilltop so finding stream water may entail a hike if you don't tank up before arriving at the campsite.

Not at the Kistler Memorial Dispersed Camping Area without a substantial hike. River Access is a short drive away near Linville Falls within the Blue Ridge Parkway.

I really want to do this type of camping but afraid if I drive down at the location for the weekend there will not be any free spots. Is there something else near that location you are aware of?
@LivingOurDreamNow4 жыл бұрын
There are plenty of campsites along Old NC 105, especially if you have a compact camping configuration. A midweek arrival should maximize your choices. All the free camping locations I have scouted are listed on my KZbin Channel under the "Free Camping in NC" playlist. The nearest alternate free campsites I've scouted would be the Brown Mountain Dispersed Camping Area approximately an hour southeast of Linville Gorge. Safe travels!

Yes, definitely your truck will do fine on Old NC 105. Just make sure you enter from the north by the cabin and don't go past Wiseman's View. I'm told the road deteriorates to high clearance 4x4 only.
