For someone like myself who plays violin in a band, 1 person would play an D-minor chord on a piano (with A as the top note). Nowadays most of us don't tune with a piano since not everybody who plays flute, clarinet, oboe, french horn, etc. has a piano at home. It is more common for people to carry an electronic metronome with a big letter "A" and a line that indicates you are low (on the left), exactly right (center) or high (on the right). Even with a piano, you don't know how long ago it was tuned so you can't count on it as much as an electronic keyboard. Otherwise I always carry a tuning fork with an "A" on it.

I have heard pianists tune up using a half diminished system, a b minor 7th flat 5 so to speak so that a is the top note with f, d and b natural underneath. We should be doing more of that sort of stuff on a jazz gig ... It'll put the other musicians in the mood for their set, particularly the bass player ...

You should do an analysis on the Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto

Little question: is it seen as rude if a pianist corrects another instruments' pitch (as in if I say "you're a little flat" or so), especially in front of judges or spectators
