the Catalinbread SFT pedal is great because it's even useful beyond QOTSA. It's great for older sounds from The Rolling Stones to many others, essentially that pedal is recreating the amp that Josh Homme used and also Keith Richards.

That's one thing he didn't mention or use.. There's 2 different modes with the version 2, Stones mode (green LED) & Stoner (red LED). 2 totally different sounds, with the Stoner mode being aimed towards the Homme thing.

Great job on this! I've always wanted to compare the SFT with the real thing myself. - The Skeleton felt right but was a bit too compressed for my liking. - SFT had the right feel, with added headroom and rawness. - Kemper was similar to VT-40 of course + low end (though less defined compared to the Skel and SFT). - VT-40 was close to the Kemper + top end. I got to say... this time, I think the SFT really stood out to me ;)

I've owned several V-4/V-4Bs, and currently have both a VT-22 and a top loader VT-40. Its wild how good the skeleton key is right out of the box. Queens/Homme of course is known to use a lot of different pedals, so it makes sense that the others all require some assistance in getting to the right tone. I would imagine you can get even closer with the SFT using the right pedals too. There is also the fact that a V-4/VT-22 does indeed sound quite a bit different with the 12" speakers and additional headroom compared to the 4x10" 60 watt VT-40. They are of course in a similar family with the preamps being nearly identical across all of the various models, but still different in the end. Very cool video, definitely makes me want to pick up a skeleton key!

I ordered a skeleton key, saw a lot of videos and after your "analysis video" I decided to order it. Sounds like an amazing pedal, to get the QOTSA sound, but also just to play and do other stuff. Can't wait to get it, keep posting those awesome videos !

I was literally just this week going through all your QOTSA videos cause I’m trying to get a similar tone but can’t get the actual amp. So this was like a perfect time to see this. I may have to cop that Catalinbread cause it was sounding good!

To my surprise both the pedal setups sounded closer to the album sounds in my head compared to the Kemper or mic'd up Ampeg. Given how many different things go into an albums guitar sound during production it's understandable how difficult it is to recreate a particular tone even when you have the same amp used.

Skeleton Key is very versatile and can do more than QOTSA but it does that sound very well right out the box without any added overdrive straight into a clean amp.

I'm surprised you didn't include the Stone Deaf PDF 1 or 2 which are in a similar price range...I think for alot of people that just want to get close so they can play along with them on their stereo, pick a guitar...Bridge pickup, roll off the highs quite a bit, maybe all the way depending on your pickups until you're getting that almost cocked wah sound...pick an overdrive or preamp pedal any one you like, or on your amp and sweep the gain until you get a nice thick crunch but not like full distortion, sweep the tone until its not too bright and not just all lows...A fuzz on lower gain settings with maybe a slight volume roll off will often get you close as well...and you're good. If you're super picky yeah one of these pedals or setups will get you closer, but really the formula is just on whatever you got push the mids really really hard and maybe roll off some highs.

The PDF is a tool to push an amp to get the tone, just like the Way Huge in this video.

@@slvskngs1317that's cos it I'd, parametric eqs are obnoxious enough without the extra stuff on that pedal. My recommendation would be not using the dirt, frankly you can do the same job with a cheap chinese parametric eq I'm not entirely sure why so many people buy the pdfs, it's not as though they're doing something unique like the sft is. Unless I'm missing something.

I think that for the Little Sister tone, the sound needs more compression, or a more compact overdriven sound. Maybe a light fuzz or a light distortion pedal, instead of and overdrive pedal. What do you think? That tone is driving me crazy 😅. I am using an Orange super crush 100 on dirty Channel with low gain and middle and bass pumped up. 🤘🏻

I've owned a few over the years, but you use the v2 Catalinbread SFT in Stoner mode (rather than Stones mode), it's plenty good as-is, by itself. It does the QotSA thing perfectly.
@topkek71423 ай бұрын
Hey Eirik, great video as always. It's hard to pick the best tone, but I'd probably lean towards the SFT. I'm wondering why you didn't use the stoner mode on the SFT, especially since you already have the bass rolled down. Personally for QOTSA, I use an SFT on stoner mode with the gain varying anywhere between 9 o'clock and 12 o'clock going into a PDF2 to boost the midrange. I think this is the best way to get the early queens sound. For kyuss I use the same setup but I haven't quite figured out how to get the right crunch sound like on the live part of Muchas Gracias
@LivingroomGearDemos3 ай бұрын
I find the stoner mode to have a bit too much gain and to be a bit unfocused for the Queens tone. Works better for Kyuss stuff in my opinion.

Other than the real deal, I think it’s the Skeleton Key is the best option. It’s the cheapest, gets you in the same territory, and you don’t really have to fiddle with it. It’s a shame that it’s out of stock for so long, but I will not hold against the pedal itself. Yeah it would be good to own a real Ampeg V-40, but it’s a pain in the ass. It’s heavy as hell, and to use it, you’d have to have the space.

Interesting that you added an overdrive to the SFT; did you try to get the tones out of the SFT on the Stoner mode without adding another pedal onto it? It was in the Stones mode when you showed it.
@LivingroomGearDemos3 ай бұрын
Stoner mode is pretty wild, works better for Kyuss tones. Stones mode is more focused and the way to go for Queens. I used an overdrive to push the SFT to focus it even further.
@chaskiandcie3 ай бұрын
Instant click, yup. For me, beside having the right amp and the right guitar Ovation, I think the SFT is the best investment you could do : I own the skeleton key, and the SFT, I barely touched the former, and the latter is still on my second board. It's really inspiring, and combines well with other pedals. Though it doesn't respond as much as the volume knob as other fuzz pedals, it's really inspires me to compose and not only play Rolling Stones and QoTSA riffs. The skeleton key is cool, but too much bass frequencies are lost. Cool for solos tho 👍🏼

Hey this sounds really like QOTSA ! Love your videos ! Just a question to ask you and I hope you have an answer ! I play the bass, I have a preamp (two notes revolt bass) and I want to buy an amp. I don't wanna bother with an amp head that has a preamp inside, I just want a power amplifier to plug in a bass cab. Ideally I would like something that delivers around 500W of power. Do you know something that could do the job ? Pleased to read your answer !

Stoner mode is not very Qotsa in my opinion - it's more stonerish. With a lot of gain and not so tight low end. Stone mode is definately the way to go for Queens tones. It's more focues, and still a lot of gain on tap.
