You want a trench across the entrance to your drive with a grid over it that would take the weight of the cars. The trench could diver the water to a gully down the side of the property. This means it will never actually go beyond the gate.

Good idea. I’d make it a stone lined channel (maybe mortared in) with a removable grid so you can lift it off and pressure wash the silt/crap out. Angle it to the side not flat on to the road. Willie built that fire pit stand, something like that method but in a gully/trench.

My daughter and I just arrived home from a few days up on Skye. We had a fabulous time (yet again) climbing the snow covered mountains, fishing, hiking with the dog, eating too much... We brought the Land Rover this time, and ended up dragging 3 cars out of ditches, and helped a guy who ripped 2 tyres out on potholes on his rental Volvo. The trip back home to Northumberland took over 9 hours due to adverse weather, so we are knackered... Good luck with the Jimny, with the right tyres, they are surprisingly capable 🙂

Our french drains would silt up too, but they are wraped in geotech water wicking cloth and a silt sleeve so they don't. they're buried surrounded by gravel and topped again with more geocloth.

I think you need a sort of moat where your gate is, with a grate on top of it so you can still walk or drive over it but the rainwater doesn't come flowing into your yard in the first place and gets diverted off to the side instead.

Sorry to hear about the flooding of your property. I recall advising you a year ago when you had your first flooding issue, was to construct a cattle grid over a pit across the entrance driveway and drain the pit into the adjacent burn. Steve 👍🚴‍♂️😊

Well done for getting a Jimmy; we had one for ages before we upgraded to a larger SZ5 Suzuki Jimmy which has more room and power but are a are LOT more expensive! but virtually the same vehicle underneath. Didn’t want to get rid of our little one though it was great! We’ve just come back from the Cairngorms and7 inches of snow in our SZ5! Never lets us down. Hubby ( Landrover mechanic) says you might want to upgrade to brighter bulbs in the headlights( Osram Nightbreaker) and Cooper discoverer AT tyres as they have better grip on rough tracks and snow. My Jimmy’s called Dizzy Nora as number ends in DZN -- Love her! Enjoy yours!

Another Jimny on Skye !! (same colour too). Lian Na loves ours. The Navara was just too big for her and we could never get the Mini up the drive into the garage when it froze over, so a Jimny was the perfect replacement (2WD / 4WD). Name? Our vote goes to..... 'Wee Jimi' - you know it makes sense :)

Quite the torrent you had. Perhaps a French drain wrapped in the geocloth sock will keep it silt free...that's what we installed, and it works brilliantly. Maybe the phrase came from an old film or book - I've heard it (and use it) and from SW Scotland. It came from the days of the landed gentry and carriages - presumably sometimes driven by someone called James. So it meant to go home at speed i.e. not 'sparing' the horses (old fashioned way of saying work them hard so we get home quickly).

My parents over in Lewis had similar problems every other year with flooding washing out the drive. But I recently added drains with removable covers across the road and we've had 1 major rain event and it helped a bit. The road is over 100 metres long so need to add some extra as these big rain events seem to be happening more often once or twice a year and not once every 3 or 4 years
