Watching this from Thailand in 32c temperature it gives me the shivers. It takes me back to when I lived in England in the 1940. We had no electricity and our lead pipes used to freeze up. I used to make small paraffin lamps out of shoe polish tins and leave them in our outside lavatory to stop the pipes freezing. It was something else to worry about other than bombs falling on us. But the snow and clear skies look beautiful where you are. Take care.

One of the things I like most about your channel is your relationship. You both seem to love each other and work together for a better life. Both pitching in to get the job done. No gender driven agendas, no his job or her job. Just working hard to keep things running smooth, as most farm families do. Well done.

When I was very young in the 1950's my father had a model A car, we didn't have a garage. In winter he put a couple of sacks over the motor at night to keep it a bit warmer. It always started, if you forget to remove the sacks before starting it they will catch fire along the road as the engine gets hot. Good old days ☺️🌻

The main thing I love about your channel in comparison with some others. Is that you show things like this, mistakes, mishaps, and all around reality on the farm (homestead). Sometimes everyone wakes up to a ticked off rooster, cranky hens, the tractor not starting, 12 more inches of snow, and last but not least ... plow man hitting the mail box again! Thats life on the Homestead. It makes us feel not alone. Thank you for being refreshing and showing the realities of homesteading. You both are a Blessing.

Oh my, last year we replaced the entire mailbox structure. We made the main post 1' taller and added so many more reflecters that it lights up like a street light on a country road. The plow truck hasn't hit it yet. Fingers crossed, lol.

Right! Unlike some other "homesteading" channels, that try to make it appear as a simple, glamorous lifestyle that anybody can just jump right into. Especially folks that have never left the city or picked up a tool. I sometimes wonder how many people have lost their livelihood or lives due to that misrepresentation.

Ok. Tips from Alaska. 1. Buy a plug in battery blanket for your batteries for tractors and vehicles. Just plug them in when you know a cold fronts coming. Especially at night. 2. You can also get a magnetic heating pad for your oil pan to plug in when it's cold. 3. Build a fire outside, or use propane stove to melt clean snow while you're doing other chores to have warm water for milk cow cleaning. By the time you move your hay, feed, your water will be ready. 4. You can also install block heater plugs in the freeze plug holes on your engine block that keep your block warm. 5. If you install those, battery blanket, oil pan pad, block plugs, you zip tie all the cords together, then plug them into a 3 way plug. You position the male end through your grill and then plug your extension cord into that. Those heaters aren't expensive and easily installed except the freeze plug heater. You guys are doing great! I really enjoy your videos.

When you know a cild snap is coming, it pays to keep a heater, heat lamps and beefed up insulation in your pump house. And keep your water trickling in the faucet farthest from your water shut off to your house.

I live in S W Missouri and we have had our water dripping in the bathtub since Sunday. We have lived on our farm about 43 years and know when the temperature drops so low to catch water. We have about 10 gallons of fresh water for cooking and coffee. And we let the water drip into the bathtub for animals and flushing the toilet. We still have water dripping because it is 6 degrees outside this morning. We have an electric heater in the well house and we still have water, but we also know what it is like to have to get water from the spring. It has been miserable cold here all week.

I moved from Las Vegas to Couch Mo (about 100 miles from you) and was afraid of my well house freezing. I bought a small atomic wall clock from Walmart and put the outside thermometer in my wellhouse. The one I bought has an alarm that can be set for minimum and maximum temp. The alarm has only gone off one time and I just went out and replaced my heat lamp bulb. Not expensive and gives me a lot of peace of mind in the winter.

Kevin, get a block warmer for your tractor. When it's very cold, you plug it in and the warmer keeps the block of the engine warm so that it is easier to start. Semi trucks typically have them.

If you save the frozen, cracked eggs, you can let them thaw, crush the shells then mix with the eggs and scramble. In the scrambled state the chickens don't realuze they're eating their eggs. They need the extra protein in this weather. The eggshells nixed in give them extra calcium. The weather you're having is more normal where I live. Yesterday was the 1st day in a week or 2 that I didn't have at least a couple of frozen eggs

We have a spring house. Our spring. Thank you, Jesus!, has brought water to our house since the early 1920s and produces some of the finest water in our county. We keep a reptile "bulb" that is ceramic and produces no light in there year round and also have 2 heat 250 watt heat lamps on all winter. The water is a steady temp in the 50º range year round. I consider the lamps consumable and always have spares on hand. The good Lord has kept us watered abundantly and we are most thankful. Keep those lamps on, Kevin. The few pennies it costs in electric is well worth the cost. God bless.

Most diesels have a "glow plug" So that you warm up the plugs prior to starting. Sometimes you turn the key backwards. If that is the case on your tractor, you need to apply the glow plug for about 10 to 20 seconds depending on the temp prior to starting. Hope that helps.

When the tractor started I would have had to said, "Thank you Lord!!!" So glad the well thawed out and you evidently had no busted pipes. Again, "Thank you Lord!!!"

Sorry about your frozen pipe situation....thats a bummer for sure. I don't have a farm or animals to look after...just myself, but I always keep jugs of emergency water in the house. I would still have a problem if the electricity went off and the house got cold. I guess one cannot foresee and plan for every situation. Maybe add some pipe insulation to the pipes in your well house would help.

I’m from Mo, and He not kidding, about being so cold your skin hurt, I was there out yesterday, getting some groceries. By the time I walked back to the car, my hands was shaking! My skin on my face, hurt!

Kevin & Sarah buy a Utility heater! We're in Missouri and have PVC pipes and it keeps the pipes from freezing. We also have a bulb we use in the well house.
