***** About Living Traditions Homestead *****
Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
We put out new videos every week! We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we give up the rat race and live simpler, more fulfilling life in the country.

The Stress of selling extra Roosters you don't need and have way too many. Wanted to get rid of the Roosters before winter hits, so didn't have to worry about feeding/ taking care of them...Been trying to sell them for months until today. Sold over 10 extra Roosters I didn't need. Huge sigh of relief when the people left. 10 less mouths to feed and to worry about during the winter in northern MN

For years, I thought bush beans were like pole beans. Keep picking them and they'll keep producing. I struggled so hard trying to make the bush beans last all season. I planted some pak choi. It was pretty, but it never got any size. I fertilized and watered. I tried different soil mixes without success. I tried for about three years, saving the seeds and trying so hard to get the big hearty plants. One day I happened upon the original seed pack and noticed the name -- dwarf pak choi.

Kevin and Sarah I've been watching your channel for over 5 years I'm from ontario canada, you both are the very first homesteaders to make me realize my regular way of life is actually homesteading I do everything by myself so this spring I built raised beds and did a better planning and one thing I will be doing is getting my garden cleaned up for the fall so when spring comes it's ready for planting. I can fertize and have it broken down by the time it's ready for me to plant thank you so much for being an inspiration thank you and God bless

OH YOU GUYS I LAUGHED AND LAUGHED OVER THE MUSTARD NOT AT YOU BUT WITH YOU WE NEVER GREW MUSTARD FOR SEED IT WAS ALWAYS CHEAPER TO JUST BUY BUT SOME LESSONS NEED TO BE TAUGHT. AND WE ALWAYS CLEANED THE GARDEN AS THE CROPS WERE DONE. WE NEVER WAITED. AND I FOUND THAT FOR ME THERE WAS ALWAYS A SENSE OF THANKFULNESS FOR WHAT GOD HAD PROVIDED AND A SMALL SENSE OF SADNESS THAT THE PLANTS WERE DYING, AND AT THE SAME TIME I SENSE OF PEACE WITH THE CYCLE OF LIFE AND KNOWING THAT AFTER THE REST OF WINTER THERE WOULD BE NEW LIFE IN THE SPRING.

Central Ohio here. Our garden was awful this year. We got lots of squash, the tomatoes are pitiful, the peppers had lots of flowers, small bitter fruit. We have lots of bees and butterflies. We have cheery trees, apples trees, a fig tree and a peach tree. Our only real success was our peach tree - the best peaches we've ever had. We had a wet spring followed by a hot drought. Our herbs did well. On to Next year!

Thanks for the encouragement to start cleaning out the plants in the fall. Even though with the short growing season we have here in North Dakota, most of our plants keep producing until the first frost hits, which can be as early as Sept 1st. Haven't had a frost yet for this fall.🤞Hopefully, it will hold off a little while cause we have a lot of green tomatoes out there yet.

We love to take a pork loin roast. Cut slits down both sides. Push a piece of garlic in each slit. Lay the pork loin in a baking dish big enough to place it from corner to corner. Cut the fronds off a fennel bulb and cut it in half from top to bottom. Place one half in each corner. Pour chicken stock over the roast to half way up the roast. Salt and pepper the roast. Pull some of the fronds and place over the roast. Cover with foil and bake until the roast 8s done and the fennel bulb is tender. Serve with horseradish mashed potatoes.

This is such a great video because it’s about being good stewards and mental health as well as spiritual strength that I think. Thank you for giving us your time today. My last garden was 31 years ago and I had to move it 6 inches above the ground because we planted it in property we didn’t known that we were renting and one month before we were going to harvest, our landlord told us to get out because his daughter was moving in. I was so upset and I didn’t have the charity in me to gift her my garden. Then I poured my heart and soul into it is beautiful. And I’m never going to garden again. I am thinking about putting in four raised beds and going on the land that I now own but I just think this is a big sore point for me. Both of you are such positive people and handle your struggles in a Christian way and for that I am thankful .

I realized that at the end of the season if I pulled out my tomato plants when they were still green, that it was so much easier than when they were all dried up. So much quicker and a lot less mess. For me not composting them as they usually had spider mites I would put black trash bag liners in the big trash cans which made disposal so easy. It worked for me being a small gardener in Southern California. I also deal with temperatures in the 100’s for a lot of the growing season. Love watching you guys! Thanks for sharing your successes and failures. Keep it real.. right!

I know exactly the feeling of accomplishment you got from doing some early fall garden chores. This is the first year that I did the same thing to my grow bag garden. I enjoyed a beautiful sunny warm day and when I was finished it looked so nice and tidy! I also watched your video using the new vacuum sealer you purchased. My old food saver bit the dust a few years ago and I've been double bagging my food and it still gets stale and frosty in my freezer. So I looked up the sealer you purchased and a Chamber Vacuum Sealer also came up. Wow I'd never heard of them before! Guess what.... That's what I bought and it's been so fun vacuum sealing all my produce and meats! The bags are cheap to buy, another win! I enjoy your videos and watch them all! Thank you!

I can absolutely relate! I tried to baby along several tomato plants. I would wake up each day thinking now is the day I need to go ahead and pull those plants. But then I would get out there, see some green tomatoes, not looking at the, horrible looking plant, and say to myself well, maybe… And then leave them. Once I finally pulled them all, and the world didn’t come to an end, I felt like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders and I enjoyed going out to the garden to do my other chores much more!

Pulling the flowers while they are blooming and so beautiful, just broke my heart!!! Just put all those seed pods in a paperbag. Let them sit to finish drying and then SHAKE the bag!! The seeds will fall out of the pods. Easy peasy!! Facing the fact that fall/winter is coming and I don't want to be out pulling the stuff when it's 40 degrees or colder,(northern MI) we just have to do it! We've been working on ours. Not much left to pull. Then it's putting the beds to bed for the winter. Thanks for sharing. God bless and protect.

I can’t garden (live in an rv park so no yard) but I do keep a couple of small pots for fall/winter flowers. I always have such a hard time letting them go in the spring after they’re done. I usually end up with pots of dead plants that just sit there looking sad all summer & then I have to deal with them in the fall before I can plant my new flowers. This reminded me that I need to be more proactive, accept when they’ve reached the end of their life cycle and take them out before they get so unsightly.

Ruth, this year again, we have about 20' of Easy Wave Petunias, quite by mistake, and FREE. How? Last 2 Falls, when the time came for cleaning off our patio, (we always do that last,) we have had enough. We just stuffed the plants in a matted mess into the top of the pots and set them aside, uncovered for the Winter and let them die off naturally. Fast forward. Spring. Cold crop beds to prep and care for first, start transplants, and set up patio last. By that time, it's warm enough to plant some flowers. Not paying any attention, the pots were all full of little Petunia plants. Dozens and dozens, started from seed that dropped into the pots as the flowers died off. The fun part is, through cross pollination, you never know what color or color pattern you'll get. 2 years of FREE Petunias. I can't say that you'll have the same results, but it's worth trying. Especially when the nurseries are getting $4 and up each. And they bloom all Summer! Give it a try, can't hurt, works here, and we are in Maine. Good Luck. 😊

I trim all season in my container garden finally after years of learning my lessons lol. The cucumber was the hardest thing to cut down this year. My second and third rounds got ate by something. I plant my pinto beans in any empty containers. After beans i will put turnip greens, lettuce, radish, beets in. I cut tomatoe plants along as they need it. I always want tomatoes til frost so I plant my suckers. I find nice days I do clean up all I can then in winter warm days I work on the adding to my soil, moving stuff around, sifting compost. Garden season never ends for me and I love it that way

I think it is a lot easier to pull plants that are not doing well as you go along. I can only put out 4 cans of yard waste a week that can't be composted. It also reduces that "big project" stress. I have been trimming my tomatoes back a lot as well as my btrnut squash, picking off new tiny fruit that will never mature.

Lesson learned last year1: sweep the anti root fabric regularely otherwise things like grass and fallen seeds wil take it over. Doing better this year but there is stell room for improvement. Lesson 2: Cover the empty holes in the fabric!!! Lesson 3: find a volunteer at workaway: Things are so much more easy when you have someone to help out even if it is for just a few days.

Fall clean up is one of my favorite times in the garden. This is year 5 of my garden. (I Converted my entire back yard to garden.) My goal is to have everything cleaned out, replenished, mulched etc before it gets too cold to do anything. (SE Wisconsin. Zone 6A.) i also gather leaves from my neighbor and mow them up and add it to a small, diy compost area. My goal for spring2025 is to just go out, push mulch aside and plant. I was close this past spring but still had a few beds I had to build.

I live in NW Oregon and have a really long growing season also. I don't have very many pests and no diseases, which make it hard to pull plants. I can tell some are just done and I get done too. I am going to pull my beans, zucchini (terrible harvest this year) and do some general garden clean up. The big thing I have to do is get every weed pulled before fall really sets in. Because of our mild weather (8a/b) the weeds don't die in the winter. My future self is always grateful my late summer self-plans ahead.

One thing that might reduce fall clean-up stress is a chart; by that, I mean that if you plant seeds in the summer and have a chart to let you know when to plant, create a chart for the end of those plants and when to pull them. Often, stress comes from the feeling of vague "lots to do", whereas a chart gives you a concrete plan.

I've learned that all plants have a life cycle. You can continue your thoughts by adding bushes and trees! Sometimes that bush gets out of shape with dead patches here and there. That tree has dead branches and has attracted bugs and birds that are continuing to send it into decline. We hate to see it, but it's all about the ebb and flow of life.

One tip I have for myself at the end of garden season is how to pick the final harvest, especially of tomatoes, more easily. I have found that if I cut the plants branch by branch and harvest as I go I am less likely to miss any usable produce, and it’s just much easier.

My 1st year gardening in so cal. It was a disaster. The most I got was a bowl of cherry tomatoes, 5 stalks of basil, 3 pickling cups, minute kale and spinach, it was horrible. Everything flowered but nothing afterwards. It was so hot, I over watered then underwatered. I'm planning on doing way more research for next season. Hopefully I will still b around!! God bless and thanks for the great vids!😊

I try to pace myself; doing a little every day. As a senior, I can no longer spend all day in the garden. It just becomes overwhelming. So pacing eases the stress and if I do not get everything I plan to do, tomorrow is just fine.

Someone else may have said this, but there is a better way to harvest mustard seeds. You place the whole branch into a paper bag, then shake, shake, shake! The pods break open on their own! Then it's just a matter of sifting out the chaff, OR cut a tiny hole in the bottom of the bag & pour the seeds out. 😊 Hope this helps.

It is hard but great job guys. I will say my new spring garden did not do well so I was so grateful that growers were near by. So I went picking got a bargain. 11 dollars for five gallon bucket. We have to do what works for us

Oh my goodness 😂 I laughed and laughed 😆 when Kevin was explaining his Nerdy Mustard Seed Math 🧮 That being said….. Azure is obviously the way to go on purchasing organic mustard seeds. I for one, look forward to seeing Kevin experiment with his own prepared mustard recipes this fall or winter 🎉 You GOT this Kevin 💪🏻 🥳

Last fall I did all the cleanup, I enhanced the soil and tilled the garden. Best thing ever because it was already ready to plant when it was time to put in the broccoli and peas. I had a beautiful garden this year! Definitely doing the cleanup and prep in the fall again!

I periodically and consistently prune most things. Less disease and easier to remove the plant when necessary. Great video. Kevin, I feel your mustard pain. Instead I buy mustard seeds in the spice isle, plant a few for the pollinators, then rip it out before it goes to seed.

Just want to tell you my experience. Last year I hurt my foot in August. Needless to say I never pulled the plants. Well, I’m not completely healed yet and they are still in the buckets !! What a jungle! Hopefully I can get someone to pull everything for me soon.

For a family of 2, I have a small garden with about 9 raised beds of various sizes, limited growing space. I also garden year round as much as possible, so rotating out even healthy plants to make room for the next season has become more palatable and I seem to have less burnout. For cleanup, I keep a large plant pot in a corner and throw everything in there as I pull it out, then dump that once a week. That is very manageable in a small garden of about 100sq ft, not so much in a larger garden such as yours. But I do find removing the debris as a plant is pulled is a once-and-done approach that works for me. Then, I can easily turn to the next planting. Just cleaned out cantaloupes, pole beans, and some tomatoes to ready the beds for broccoli, bok choy, Brussel sprouts and, later, garlic. I love your homesteading videos and gardening insights.

We had a lot of issues in the garden this year that were lessons that we’ll have to change for next year. Our main garden was flooded most of the spring and the middle of summer to where we couldn’t get plants in the ground. My greenhouse was overflowing. So I bought a whole bunch of containers and put all the plants in them. They did OK but were late. So, we’re putting raised beds in our big garden area for next year.

I grew fennel for the first time this year also and had to find ways to use them. So I've canned lots of fennel carrot soup and fennel pickles and fennel relish, not to mention putting it in salad and stir fries. I've got mustard blowing in the wind out there and I'm fixing to harvest the seeds for sprouting (it doesn't matter how much I get, lol) like I did with the radish pods. My beans are just putting out their first flush and this year that may be all we get because it's already cold here in northern Ontario. Always love watching you and appreciate how real you are!

Hello you guys. I know you’ll be so glad you got rid of the spent plants. It’s not as though you don’t have other seasonal work to do! Kevin and Sarah, will there be a Nerdy Mustard Math T-Shirt or something? I can see the calm coming over the garden. I love your idea of this early fall clean up. Sending you so many good wishes! ❤

I was unsubscribed! So glad I checked. I, too, pulled some fading squash/zucchini this week. On to the cucumbers. They are looking nasty. Our pumpkins and winter squash are half pulled. Waiting on a few to mature. You are right! It is so refreshing to have a bit of cleanup done. Excited to harvest our first attempt at sweet potatoes. I think they are nearly ready. Look forward to each of your videos. Thank you!

I agree. We started really early this spring and would really like to get everything cleaned up cause the cold hit us hard today. It's supposed to warm up a bit this week so hopefully all my bean seeds will be ready to come off the plants. The only thing we're leaving took later is one bed full of carrots and lettuce.
