This entire series has been fantastic! Any significant improvements or new information over the past 8 years might make for a good follow-up series... though it seems pretty straight forward. Very well done and thanks for sharing 🤠

Fantastic series / playlist on the black soldier fly. I don't think you left any questions unanswered. Well done. Thanks for sharing. And, thanks to Cassie Langstraat over at Permies.com for sharing this series there. That's how I found this. :)

*Summary of video:* Temps between 60*f and 104*f are the most extreme safe zones. 100*F is fine. 105*F is too hot. 115*f will kill them. Local BSF will tolerate local weather better than buying online from a different climate. Too dry, they won't crawl off during pre-pupae. Burlap on top can help hold humidity.

Okay just watched the series 1-9 and thought it was very informative. The filler info was great. If we wanted to use these larvae for feed for chickens what is a good bulk product that is cheap to use without loss of protein and fat?

hi, my name is August, and have a question, i am toying with the idea of starting with bsf in africa, to feed tilapia, if i used a combination of bsf/duckweed to feed the fish would it work? is it enough to give a balanced diet

0:50 highest temp for BSF/BSFL? genetics. 105*-110* is too hot. They will look for cooler temp. at 115*F they die. add 2-3 ice packs. 2:40 lifecycle. BSF/L can't go below 60*f, what about in texas at 100*? 100*f is fine. Native BSF tolerate the local climate better than non-local. Has to be in FULL SHADE in texas. 4:21 Best to not buy online from other states. Best to buy from same state or catch locally is best. 5:00 Southern California? If too dry, they will not crawl off. They need humidity/moisture to give them the security to crawl off. Try burlap on top if humidity is an issue.

Hi I have not heard much said about contamination of the grubs from say pesticides herbicides and fungicides from The Source material used as their diet will using non organic food sources be a major contamination issue for the grubs? I don't think anyone really wants to feed contaminated grubs to their chickens or fish? Is there a breakdown of these contaminants to any significant degree from the grubs digesting in the materials? Great vids. Thx

We don't have enough food scraps from our household to feed our BSFL. We have 30 chickens and we never have enough grubs for them. Is there a certain grain that I can easily purchase to easily feed them more bulk? Like corn, barley, oats??? Dog food?? Or maybe a combination of these things??? I was thinking I could mix a combination of grains in a bucket with some water and let the dryer grains soak for a day or two before I dump them in the bin??? I was just wondering what you thought would be the best combination and type of grains for higher production? Your videos are awesome thank you so much.

You can grow duckweed and feed it to the grubs.

Duckweed will kill a pond, it robs oxygen and grows very fast. It also makes a lot of slug in the bottom of your pond.

@@rosstemple7617 feed the slugs to your chickens...they are great for chickens/ducks/fish....create a pond/pool if you have the space just for duckweed..there are videos of farmers growing duckweed and snails/slugs to feed to their chickens to reduce the cost of feed. Put some fish that can handle low oxygen water like gold fish and to get rid of the mosquito larve....you can get a small pump to oxygenate the water if you really need oxygen in the water........you can create a small aquaponics garden from the water...but thats will require more equipment and more space.....basically pump the water into another tank that holds hour garden which will clean the water...then pump the water....back into the tank...if you set things up correctly you will only need one pump to cycle the water between the the tanks and your garden....lots of video out there..good luck...

I've seen someone use oats, but I'm not sure how cost effective that is. Another resource may be your community: We collect food "waste" from our neighbors. Others collect from restaurants and grocery stores. If that works in your situation you may not need to buy anything. Good luck.

How can i get BSFL to initiate the colony? I just create the bin and fill with waste foods and the BSF will come by itself? I'm in Malaysia, tropic country.

marcus tee Basically, yes, but just watch the other videos in this playlist. Your questions are answered in detail in them.
