In the forest, the game actually has circular sensors. As long as Mark runs far enough away from the center, he will always progress to the next area. It's only possible to get stuck if Mark literally stays in the exact same tiny circle (which I think was a distinct possibility.)

Lixian gets hours and hours of raw Mark footage. That means he not only knew how much Damien means to Mark, but could extend the story close to what Mark actually planned.
