Only 17 years old at the time. An incredibly talented singer, dancer, actress. Liza had enormous presence at an early age.

Also, she was the voice of Dorothy in Journey Back to Oz in 1962 (unfinished musical animated film by Filmation until released in 1974) with her clumsy but charming voice.

What I'd give to sit in a little joint with a jukebox... you can have a time on just one dime. Out of this World, Liza ! Thank you for sharing! 💖

The song is from "Best Foot Forward", a Broadway musical from 1941. Liza was starring in an off-Broadway revival of the play in 1963. A cast recording is available.

I was wondering about the dancers. I assume they were part of the number on stage. I see this was just posted yesterday. Someone will see this video and identify the gentlemen.

I didn't know Liza appeared on the Sullivan show so early on. Turns out this was part of her first appearance on the show. It's amazing how much she sounds and looks like her mother, Judy Garland. I'd also love to see 1930's popular singer, Arthur Tracy, sing his signature song "Marta" on this episode.

I was 13 years old. We were still in the era of the beatniks and the Beat Generation. Jules Feiffer drew on those kinds of dance moves in his stoically downtrodden cartoons.

A great movie starring Liza (and many other recognizable Broadway actors) is Stepping Out. It's lower key Liza with one song and a beautiful dance solo; and it's a lovely story to boot.

Arguably, the children of fantastic talents usually seem to inherit a watered-down version of their parent's brilliance. Think about Julian Lennon or Jacob Dylan or Bridget Fonda and a whole list of others. But Liza, man, she seemed to take the handoff directly, at least here at age 17.

I've seen her perform on TV numerous times over the decades and this is the first time I wondered what her management was thinking at this time. You had a beautiful young girl with a wonderful voice and a bundle of talent. Did no one think to contact the producers and songwriters of the day so she could sing teen pop and have a bunch of million selling hits? Where was her Quincy Jones who produced all those hits for Leslie Gore, or a Snuff Garrett and Leon Russell who turned Gary Lewis into a teen idol?

@@shave-a-thon3415 I don't know much about Liza except seeing her amazing performances (Liza with a Z, Cabaret, etc.) but it's possible she chose NOT to be a pop singer and instead head towards Broadway or similar. She also might have seen/ heard from her Mom what it was like to be a Hollywood celebrity and decided against it. Seems like she made a good choice as her career lasted decades.

Her voice is a bit of clumsy but charming since she was the voice of Dorothy in "Journey Back to Oz (1974)" by the animation studio in California: Filmation; only unfinished animated musical film when she was 16 for partial music and voice recording in 1962 which was finished early.
