I have a question - What is the best way to calculate use cost for gear? Like is there a good solid percentage to use or something else? I greatly loved this video and will be referencing it more and just yesterday I bought the Budget & Pricing guide from you and Chris. Looking forward to watching the video with it this weekend!!!!

What I would want to know about is properly licensing your images. Not an agency or stock photo site or anything, just self-licensing from my own site.
@LizziePeirce2 жыл бұрын
@@keybladeoflight7 I like to create gear packages . Like a tier 1,2,3 type thing. Tier 1 is a smaller bundle of gear and a lower flat rate and the price would increase per tier. Does that make sense?
@LizziePeirce2 жыл бұрын
@@tes2117 Licensing depends on a few things. The length of time they're licensing it, the platform it's being used on, and the exclusivity. All of these will affect the price!

Would love to see a video on negotiations with different types of clients? Always have wondered about the right way and if maybe sometimes I fold to easily to get the job.
@VideoProductionResource3 күн бұрын
Lizzie, this video is a couple years old but it was spot on then, and it's still spot on today. The golden nugget you said was, "The more consistent the photography community is with our pricing, the easier it will be for us to receive the compensation that we deserve. So, we’re working together here, as a family." I've never seen more confusion in the industry about what to charge. People are giving their services away because they don't know their true worth. The things you said in this video need to be an ongoing conversation. Our industry needs a common source that we can all go to for this type of information. I appreciate the work you're doing.

Thanks for this Lizzie! This is something I’m always assessing myself on … I have a full time “normal” job and work photography on the side hoping to build it up, this is a nice road map and good general way of approaching things! Thanks 🙏🏼
@Dave.adriaanse2 жыл бұрын
I think this is the perfect way to start charging what you're worth! I've also got a ''normal'' job for 32 hours a week which I can pay all me expenses with. Everything I earn with photography is extra. If someone thinks I'm to expensive I'll let them go. The upcoming 3 months I'm packed with bookings and earn more with photography then with my ''normal'' job I'm mostly doing event photography and both incomes combined I earn 6k per month the upcoming 3 months. LOVE IT!

Ah, man! Lizzie! Even big companies are guilty of the pricing foibles you mention! I used to work for a printing company who were so worried aboutut not getting jobs from clientsthat they undercut their own costs so much that they could never recover once they had locked that client in. The client always wanted the lowball and so they never became a PROFITABLE client, just one who ran business through the system. Such good insight!

I would say the first thing you must determine is how much money you need...the same as you would when applying for a 9-5 job. Calculate: ((Annual Cost of Doing Business /number of jobs you expect to do in the year)+ Expenses and Costs for Each Job + Hourly contractor wage for yourself for each job ) + Sales Tax percentage + 40% for Federal self-employment and income Taxes + whatever percent for state taxes. First figure out how much you need just to keep the lights on, keep the taxman happy, and pay your personal bills....per job (because there are only so many jobs you can do in a year. That's how much money you need. Then determine if you're good enough to charge that much, or whether you're selling the right product, or whether you're selling to the right market.

Hi Lizzie, I noticed that most KZbinrs pay their video editors a little. Some pay $150 per video. I come from a editing commercial background, where editors would charge more than $500 per day. In your experience, what is a usual and appropriate rate for editing KZbin videos when you have years of professional experience? More reaction videos, fast-paced, a lot of zoom ins , cuts and simple effects. With a 4-day turn around. I don't like to charge per hour, it can get a bit messy at times. So looking to charge flat rates (per video) with a solid contract in place (limit of 2 revisions), or day rates. But with day rates it can get really pricey. Most KZbinrs won't pay 1k or more per video once or twice a week, which is why I am having a hard time figuring how to charge, since I mainly relied on day rates for many years. Would appreciate some advice, thanks!

The way I do it, curious if this is a good way... I have a base shooting rate for the day. No photos are incl in this. The client gets to select which photos they want & how many they want. That way, I give them the option to choose the best photos for their need. In the end, instead of saying 40-60 photos, the client chooses how many they want. Each photo they choose is individually charged. So, it could be more or less. PROS / CONS - You don't have to edit photo the client doesn't want or wont end up using, making them feel as though its a waste of money. - The can end up selecting less photos than desired, but with the base rate, its not an issue as you've been paid your rate - The can end up selecting more photos, making more $$$ ***BUT, No one also mentions anything about Image Licensing Fees (for commercial clients)

I’m a new photographer, got my camera around a month ago and have spent hoursss on KZbin educating myself. Also going out every day and taking photo, I’m not exaggerating, I practice every day because I love it so much! I’ve done a couple free shoots for my friends and they loves the photos. I got an inquiry on instagram from a person I know of, but I don’t know them well. They wanted to book a shoot with me including their horse and dog and asked how much I would charge. I gave them a price of $100. I felt like this price was justified as I’ve spent $1000s on my camera and just bought a new lens. Well, the client ghosted me. I’m not sure what to do, I’d love to do the photo shoot with them. But I don’t want to do it for free. Any advice?

$100 imo would be to little because not only you’re working with the person, you have to work with the horse trying to make sure the two subjects come out good! Ask for a deposit so you know they’re serious!
