I like all the different details you picked out and how you showed all the close up shots that people usually skip over for mostly full view shots.

Visiting Shenyang Forbidden City, was surprised how narrow the dao blades displayed were.

Great overview! Really fair points about how it comes together and some nice showcasing of how the dao handles. I also appreciated your tour of sabres which share in some nihonto sword design. If you stay in touch with Dekker, I might share the specs on your grip since you mentioned a little bit of the discomfort. I have an older model of this sword, and when he and I first spoke he mentioned disappointment that LKChen had made the grip a bit too big. Hopefully they have improved the grip, as many antique dao do have very thin grips making them quite easy to hold; if not, then perhaps they will hear enough reviewer's encouragement to revise the designs on the next iteration!

@@dlatrexswords hey thanks for mentioning this, as far as I can tell the grip is thin enough so it's not hard to hold - obviously it doesn't have the sheer comfort of a round/cylindrical grip (like a Dha/daab) but it doesn't bother me. That said I have noticed LK Chen seems to change the balance and ergonomics of blades a bit from what I'd think were historical norms, I wonder how much of that is the personal bias of the product designer as opposed to the antique blade's properties.. 🤷🏻‍♂️

The character 倭 was used as a derogatory term to describe the Japanese pirates of the Ming and Ching Dynasties because that character means dwarf. At that time most of the Japanese pirates were smaller in stature than the average Chinese soldier. So they were called dwarf pirates. Since then the average Japanese has grown in stature due to the improvement of their diet.

I wonder what the role of the blade collar is considering the tang is peened. Since it's not able to be disassembled like Japanese swords, I imagine the role is different from the katana's habaki. And it also has a different shape. Also I can't imagine it functions like a ricasso since there's no way you're getting your finger around that dish guard.

I do like the sword. What turned off about it was the color of the grip and the faux leather wrapping on the scabbard. Black cord and a plain wood scabbard and I would maybe have one in hand now. Or red cord even. That teal just kills me.
@the.wandering.warrior
@the.wandering.warrior 4 ай бұрын
@@christopherhancock9041 the teal green cord is a bit bright for me as well, I'd rather it just be solid green. As for leather wrapped scabbard that seems to be traditional for the time period

@@the.wandering.warrior if it was actual leather I would be fine with it. Not ray skin, but pretty cool none the less. Sadly this scabbard per their website, is covered in pleather, faux leather of some kind. ick Although it may last longer untreated. . Green cord would be nice too. Anything more muted and does not get so dirty looking so quick.

Great information! I guess it’s nothing new that so many katana one find for sale (including the one I proudly own) are made in China. While the boxy hilt might not be great for hours of practice, it should help with blade indexing I bet.

Why did they choose neon green for the grip? An darker green would have looked better.

LK Chen is really great with the very ancient swords, but when it comes to Ming and Ching Dynasty and newer swords, his fittings aren't quite as authentic. I appreciate the reasons that he wants to use the Faux-leather, but it isn't durable enough for a usable piece. Still, he gives you "the best bang for the buck".

If you didn’t like the sharp corners of the handle, could you reprofile the handle metal itself? Or rewrap with a thicker material?
@the.wandering.warrior
@the.wandering.warrior 4 ай бұрын
@@mengmao5033 well.. if you're holding it correctly you won't be touching the metal just the wooden grip wrapped with cord, and if an angular grip just wasn't what you wanted you would get a rounded style

Oh the handle is wood around the tang? And you’d just detach it? When I said reprofile, I was thinking of filling the edges of the handle under the wrap. Then rewrapping
