Chicago CTA Brown Line WINTER POV

It's been so hot in Chicago lately, I decided to dig up some footage from a few winters ago. Most of this video is showing the back view from a CTA Brown line train from the elevated Montrose Station, down the ramp to ground level after Western Station. The train continues at ground level, crossing the Chicago river.

I love living so close to the Brown Line. I live about a mile, or a 20 minute walk from the Damen Station. I also live about a mile from the Red Line.

I am from Britain and this reminds me when I visited my now wife in Chicago for a month back in December 2002 (a long time ago now). Very deep snow that lasted the duration of my visit and up until March 2003. Not been back since 2004, would like to for nostalgia. Thank you for sharing.

The brown line may be my favorite CTA line. It's so scenic the way it goes about the city and the suburbs. And it's especially grand in the winter.

Did you know the CTA Chicago Subway rail got 600 voltage of danger electrical power that's not good for you

@@Tairqthephotoman2024 did you know there is DC Power on the 3rd rail and the trains have AC Electrical Power Inverters for another rides and also for the 3200 series rail cars and the 2600 series and also slow zones in the Kimball branch

I've been a resident of southern Arizona for 26 years now. However, just looking at the winter scenes in this video remind me of those cold, and some times, long waits on the "L" platform. Even though I literally get chills just thinking about winter waits on the CTA, I do miss it from time to time as it brings back some good memories of growing up in Chicago from the late 1950s to the mid-1990s.

Iain: The Pink Line to 54/ Cermak is also at ground level for about the last mile or so of it's line

The old Garfield Park Line (now the Blue Line To Forest Park) before it was put in the center of the Eisenhower Expressway, was at ground level from Laramie Avenue to Forest Park, also the Lake Street Line (Now the Green line) was at ground level until the 1960's, when the C & NW sold them part of their right of way.

Don't they set the train tracks on fire during the winter in Chicago? I remember seeing a news clip about it lol

No. CTA doesn't set its tracks "on fire" so to speak. But they do utilize electric switch heating elements to keep switches from freezing so they don't fail in the winter. And if my memory serves me right, I think there are heating elements that prevent certain sections of the third rail from icing up as well.

I really do appreciate your videos and I honestly think you should definitely keep up with the content, but the fact that you were on a track to capture the shots starting at 10:10 is both dangerous and illegal. Safety should be your top priority, not perfection. By the way, your video about Wilson Station Reconstruction has inspired me to create construction project videos in the future. I'm starting with the Red-Purple Bypass and Lawrence-Bryn Mawr Modernization Projects.

Thank you for your comment. The shots taken starting at 10:10 were at a road crossing, and were never taken while the gates were down. It was perfectly legal and safe to be where I was. I was standing on the sidewalk. The video of the train coming towards me was shot with a long zoom lens and I’m actually upset that I didn’t stay shooting for longer. The RR gates were not going down yet.
