Llandudno 1952 ~ A Film By George Wain

George Wain was my art master at Hyde Grammar School, and an amateur film maker.
Here he is with his family on a day trip to Llandudno in 1952.
Note George's sense of humour, where every shot of him in the film he's asleep.

What a lovely film. It looks a simpler, happier and more innocent time. I'm sure they had their struggles, but I sometimes feel I wish I'd been born in this era. Thanks for sharing.

Lovely film. I really like 40's 50's & 60's films as they show how much Britain has changed over the years. Llandudno is a lovely town. The music goes really well with the footage. Thanks for sharing :)

George Wain was my art master between 1955 and 1959. I recognise Peter Wain in the film; he was in the same class as myself during my Hyde Grammar School days. I was invited to the Wain home on Dowson Road, Hyde where I was shown a book recording all pupils whom had received the yearly Art Shield. (I still my have my treasured copy). Thanks for this. Many lovely memories were refreshed-i was a 60s version of the young lad - but of course Llandudno hadn't changed at all! My parents were in Stockport and Grandparents in Burton Upon Trent and it always felt like we were going on Safari - the roads of course were tiny by comparison with the A55 etc. Sis and I had checkpoints - water tower near Runcorn; Spitfire at RAF base nr Chester; Holywell and the view towards Liverpool, then gathering excitement of St Asaph's church.

George Wain was also my art master at Hyde Grammar School and now I live just outside Llandudno so the 16 mm film is very interesting on several levels. Also I like your choice of music by Robert Farnon. I used it for one of my films once when I was with the Cheadle and Gatley Cine Club circa 1965. Robert Farnon was an inventive composer much used by the BBC ( like Elizabethan Serenade Ronald Binge, oops :-) ) way back when there was only the BBC. Thanks a lot for uploading. * * * * *

It is interesting to see George Wain's films. I believe he was an art teacher at Hyde Grammar School. I have two paintings done by him, one dated 1971. They are well painted and he appears to have been a very talented man.

Great film, like so many it brings back wonderful memories. My parents took us to Llandudno every year back in the 70's. The boat that berthed at the end of the pier went around Puffin Island, one may have even gone to the Isle of Man? I'm determined to make a visit again, it's been 30+ years, it will be a emotional return after spending so many happy times there with my parents who have now passed on

A real gem which captures the seaside holiday in those days. For me. family holidays in Minehead or on the beach at home in Burnhurn-on-Sea and not forgetting cruises on P & A Campbell's White Funnel Fleet.

I went to Mr Wain's house once to watch one of his films and it was definitely 16 mm film stock he used. I could only ever run to 8 mm and later super 8 mm. Thanks again for the upload, it was interesting to see how clothes have changed so much but Llandudno is not too different today. Shame though that it no longer has the the steam ships departing from the end of the pier.

@robertwmartens I have an audio cassette tape recorded by George towards the end of his life, giving a commentary on his film "Much Ado", as he's showing the film to friends on his projector. The sound of the projector is a little too loud. However, it might be worth trying to marry his words to the film, and somehow reduce the projector noise.
