Llandudno is still a delightful place. My Mother worked in M & S shop in Mostyn Street in the 1930's. She loved it there. Good quality filming here.

Thank you, Malcolm. My Grandparents lived at the 'Moorings' on the West Shore of Llandudno. From there one could see Puffin Island. The Gogarth was a delightful Hotel owned, I believe, by Ms Mack. On entering the dining room on one's left one had a good view across the sea, and on the wall between the dining room entrance and the large windows was a massive painting of "The Walrus and the Carpenter". Under the base and the length of this painting was a narrow display cabinet containing beautifully painted hand made characters from "Alice in Wonderland". They were flat in their appearance and construct, made in layers of thin wood (front, middle and back) the arms and legs moved and were firm enough for them to stand up on their own. Years later, I went into the Gogarth. Ms Mack had died and the Gogarth had been sold to a large company. I asked the then Manager where were the 'Alice in Wonderland' characters which used to be displayed on the wall there under the Walrus and the Carpenter. The manager went back to his office and returned with all the Characters in a large brown paper bag, which he said had been sitting on his desk for a long time. The Characters were very reminiscent of the sketches in the early editions of Alice in Wonderland Books. Before the government wrecked our beaches with granite stones. The West Shore had a delightful sandy beach. And a large very well made white concrete sea defence which had layers that acted as steps, like a huge wide staircase. So it would be very easy to walk off the sands up the steps then at the top there is a path way where one could walk to steps over the top of the structure on to the grass. Quite often people would sit on these large steps on a rug and have a picnic and leave their clothes there whilst going for a swim. Walking down the steps on to the then sandy beach, and walking to the right along the beach past the Gogarth, one could see (before the beach was vandalised and wrecked by stones) on the flat sandy area by the cliffs, (sometimes with a reflective sheen when the tide had just gone out) two lonely figures in the distance, were infact the rocks that resembled, 'the walrus and the carpenter' in that magnificent painting. When we went to see our Grandparents in Llandudno some times we would approach the Orme near the pier and go on the electric (bumper car) boats. As we walked along the road, we walked into a park called Happy Valley. There was an outdoor theatre (I believe it was owned and run by the Munroe family) shown in the film with rows of chairs in an enclosed area. However, on either side of the theatre were two hills, where the vast majority of people, families sat on rugs and chairs with their picnics to watch. During the entertainment boxes would come round where people would pay what they could afford. It was a cheerful event, with the people on one hill being encouraged to sing louder than the people on the other hill or sing a real or duet. Many of the children from the 'hills' were invited to come and take part in competitions on stage. After the boat ride to Conway, there was a small picture from Rhos-on-Sea, Colwyn Bay. There used to be a monestry near the beach and near the Saint's small house going out to sea were ancient fish traps structures which the monks used to use and maintain. Also the large outdoor swimming pool which we used to use as children has gone and built over, similarly many years previously my mother as a young child used to swim in the large outdoor swimming pool between Llandudno and a place that sounds like Penn-manar, I saw a film of my great grandfather (from Canada) with my mother swimming in the large swimming pool. I was amazed to see that he was sport the new bathing costume for men, shorts and bikini top! It is amazing how fashions change. The swimming pool, now gone, has been converted into a small housing estate.

Thank you Malcolm. My grandparents lived along the coast from Llandudno & I remember going to Gogarth Abbey for lunch - a special occasion. Much of the area around Colwyn Bay was built by my Great Grandfather. That car was a Rolls Royce. I wonder who owned it? I remember my aunt's friends Glover & Eleanor Ward had a Rolls, but that was 20 years or so later. I doubt whether there were many of them in 1935.

St Trillo's Church @ 12:20 is still there in Rhos on Sea, but what I assume to be Rhos pier @ 12:40 is long gone. Fascinating to see what it looked like and also how the promenade there has changed. Rhos Fynach monastery @12:48 is now a pub, the Rhos Fynach. Great to see how the area looked back in the 30s, a lot of it still looks the same.

Thank you, a wonderful upload, something one supposes was somewhat casually filmed as a family keepsake becomes sociologically important in time. That beautiful little girl would be what, about 87ish now? You wonder if she would ever recognise herself. How time indeed flies.

Beautiful film I'm also curious to know about the life of the little girl I was born in Llandudno in 1943 and grew up in Colwyn bay although far away now. Great nostalgic experience, thanks

Fantastic coverage and like myself I had 8mm and super 8 film we recorded history in the making, otherwise this would be lost forever, what a simple uncomplicated life we led in those years, we lived life to the full, and enjoyed the simplicity of our younger years thank you for sharing your superb production with us all
