Join Anna and Alf in this video as they visit LLANDUDNO in NORTH WALES, UK which is known as 'THE QUEEN OF THE WELSH RESORTS' and is the WONDERLAND OF THE REAL ALICE IN WONDERLAND, ALICE LIDDELL.
ALICE LIDDELL was the inspiration behind LEWIS CARROLL'S book classics, 'ALICE IN WONDERLAND' AND THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS' and her and her family spent many years visiting a holiday home that her father built for them on THE WEST SHORE BEACH in LLANDUDNO and named it PENMORFA and ALICE and her sisters EDITH and LORINA shared their many adventures in WONDERLAND LLANDUDNO with family friend LEWIS CARROLL and it is here that he got inspired to write ALICE IN WONDERLAND based on the real ALICE LIDDELL, the daughter of his close friend.
IN THIS VIDEO Anna teaches of the connection between THE LIDDELL FAMILY and LEWIS CARROLL and THE LIDDELL FAMILY AND QUEEN VICTORIA where ALICE LIDDELL nearly married PRINCE LEOPOLD as
she takes us on the famous 'ALICE IN WONDERLAND TOWN TRAIL' discovering in this VICTORIAN TOWN ALL OF THE SITES THAT INSPIRED LEWIS' WRITING and ANNA stops at each point and explains where in the books that LEWIS CARROLL mentioned these places which include large wood carvings of:
ALICE
THE WHITE RABBIT
THE MAD HATTER and his TEA PARTY TABLE
KING AND QUEEN CHAIRS
THE SMALL DOOR INTO WONDERLAND
CHESHIRE CAT
THE QUEEN OF HEARTS and
TWEEDLE DEE and TWEEDLE DUM spread throughout the town and up THE GREAT ORME as well as visiting the church that the LIDDELLS WORSHIPPED AT, walking up the ZIG ZAG PATH and seeing the cave on the GREAT ORME that inspired THE RABBIT HOLE.
There is a visit to the pool that inspired THE POOL OF TEARS and we see the rocks that inspired THE WALRUS AND THE CARPENTER as well as visiting the site of PENMORFA which was THE HOLIDAY HOME OF THE LIDDELLS THAT LEWIS CARROLL STAYED AT and most importantly
THE LEWIS CARROLL WHITE RABBIT MEMORIAL STATUE which was unveiled by DAVID LLOYD GEORGE who was a local MP and FORMER PRIME MINISTER OF GREAT BRITAIN. It was unveiled in a belated commemoration of the centenary ( 1932) of LEWIS CARROLLS BIRTH and on it is written " ON THIS VERY SHORE, DURING HAPPY RAMBLES WITH ALICE LIDDELL, LEWIS CARROLL WAS INSPIRED TO WRITE THE LITERARY TREASURE ' ALICE IN WONDERLAND '
At the time of the unveiling of the statue, THE REAL ALICE IN WONDERLAND, ALICE HARGREAVES ( LIDDELL ) was aged 81 and unable to make the ceremony but she did write a letter to the organiser expressing her regret which said
" I feel very real regret that I cannot be with you at the unveiling of the memorial to that wonderful friend of my childhood Lewis Carroll, but increasing age makes a physical adventure in WONDERLAND more and more difficult to achieve.
I still have the happiest memories of PENMORFA, as my father's house on the WEST SHORE at LLANDUDNO was called then, and of the rambles over THE GREAT ORME and among the sand hills. I wish I could be present in person to express my gratitude for those joyous days, and for the days I spent with Mr Dodgson ( Also known as LEWIS CARROLL ) "
