Master Irvin's over hook was on the wrong side from where you usually want it and he could have given up his back, but he is fast!

dontwalkdontrun, I can assure you it's not the "wrong" side. You are thinking about an arm-drag. What Irvin's going for is a variation of the "russian tie-up" which is a wrestling move.

I am not thinking of an arm-drag. In judo when you do o-soto gari you want to drive your opponent hard onto the leg you are going to reap with a strong grip on that side. Master Irvin is driving him with only a left side grip and throws on his right. It looks like the wrong side for o-soto if you do judo, but admittedly I don't know much about no-gi grips for judo moves.

they definitely need to make some type of rule that if there is no takedown within a cetain amount of time before the match is over, then u flip a coin or whoever has the most advantages gets the choice if they want top position or guard but it needs to get to the ground to determine a winner imo..one halfass takedown that you cant even hold shouldnt win you a match

ya they need to figure something out for sure...the reason i offered that option is because at my academy(which i only teach, i dont own) when we have in house tourneys, there 8 mins and if theres no takedown by 5 minute mark then we flip a coin and the winner gets to pick if he wants guard or top position...u jus cant have a winner of a bjj match where theres no actuall bjj involved!! but it will prob never happen cuz the ibjjf sux balls and are too proud to admit they need a change!!

it doesnt have to be a fist fight to be a battle, i agree with that but its still not a fight...its a match..it's called a match by the ibjjf naga and abu dhabi, although they do use the term "superfight".. imo though if you call this a fight, then are all grappling competitor's "fighters"?? i have done jiu-jitsu matches i dont consider myself a fighter cuz im not interested in getting punched...like i said though this is just one of my personality querks, u can call it a fight! happyxmas!

bornfedslaughter I know what you mean. It may be because of the point system here; if you watch catch wrestling tournaments it ALWAYS goes to the ground. But in jujitsu guys defense and guard is the primary thing, and in a lot of tournaments you get pointed on position and even penalized for pulling guard. On the other hand, I personally dislike gi because I, a jujitsu white belt, can tap guys on a pretty high level due to superior gripfighting and takedowns (that I acquired from other martial arts), but if I'm wearing a gi they'll have my back by the time I can strip their first grip. I do recognize the usefulness of the gi for real life fighting situations, but it changes the dynamic of grappling even more than big gloves change boxing or small gloves change wing chun.

master lloyd was my first instructor, and i love him and his dc academy to death..love all those guys, but please budojake, this is a jiu-jitsu match, its not a fight...this is a pet peave of mine, so dont pay attention if im offending u, this jus drives me nuts...and im a jiu-jitsu purist, so i dont know if it erks anyone else but i can only imagine it does, especially if ur not a jiu-jitsu purist.
