This Golf, came to me after started being worked on somewhere else...
As I later found, the owner decided to get in touch when it was suggested to replace the gear box in order to resolve the problem...🤦‍♂️
The problem, was NOT the gearbox... lol
So, the issue with the car, was that that the speedometer would randomly stop working...
Dropping to zero, and then back to showing the speed...

Hi Luis, as a mechanic of 40+ years I've listened to other peoples opinions of faults which has led me down the wrong path, and guess what I probably will still do it again, just human nature to believe other peoples point of view, It's difficult to turn round to a customer/driver and effectively say you don't know what your on about (positively rude really), but fair play after some logical thought you discovered the root cause, even though the customer was mistaken in their assumption to the problem....love the videos, and a Happy new Year to you

Great Diagnosis! I currently have a speedometer problem with a 2003 GTi Golf MkIV. It is only working in the 90 to 120 + sector and not going back to zero, so need to find out why before changing sensors etc. This video is really informative, Thanks.

It's a really common isssue in mk4 golfs. I've had 3 of these the past year with wiring problem on the speedo. Well done.

That is unbelievable to suggest he needed a new gearbox and sensor without checking the wiring first Absolutely madness.

The problem with older cars is that the parts are cheap and plentiful. So instead of investing any labour investigating they just say "throw a 30 quid sensor or second hand box at it". Reality is they just don't want the work. Guys that invest time properly and methodically checking are hard enough to find. This guy re soldered the connectors "just to be sure" there's 15 pins each side and they are fairly small. Try finding someone like this anywhere else in the UK.

I have taken jobs and not started from were I would begin as testing already done Big mistake 🤣. I diagnosed my vw with EGR sticking which was correct but took to vw for replacement parts and asked for discount when the diag correct as I know they cannot just go by me. And because I was right only charged half . I was auto electrician.

Hi, I suddenly had 3 elective peobpemas. 1, my odometer shows no speed, my outside temperature sensor stopped at 11 degrees, my fuel level, even though it goes up and down in turns, then drops to 0. These errors occurred simultaneously. what do you think it could be?

What is the background of the car? Are you sure the lights have not been covered or removed on the cluster? A test of the cluster with a scan tool will confirm just that... 👍👍👍

Hey, I have a Golf 4. The gearbox has been changed from your automatic to a normal one. The speedometer is not working. A speed sensor has been installed, but it is not working. How is the solution to the problem?

From a quick look, looks like despite the connection of the sensor to the cluster is on the same pin, on pin 28 on the cluster 32 pin blue connector, the connection on a manual or automatic goes through a different connector in the engine bay... I would say, double check your connections against diagrams... Perhaps also make sure everything is reaching the cluster... 👍👍👍

Luis boa noite podes dar uma ajuda , tenho um polo 6n o conta rotações funciona, o relógio conta os kilometros mas as agulhas do sensor de gasolina e o que mostra a velocidade não funcionam , ideias , podes ajudar ?!

Com a máquina tenta actuat as agulhas, se funcionarem o problema pode ser externo, se não funcionarem pode ser o quadrante.... 👍👍👍

@@LMAutoRepairs boa noite mais uma vez , detetei outro problema o conta kilometros poe kms a mais e depois a fim de alguns outros tantos tira , porque será , exemplo quando o fomos comprar tinha 212 mil quando chegamos a minha casa marcava 217 mil , o rapaz foi a casa e voltou ficou com 215 mil , what hell estou perplexo com isto , que versão do vcds me reconenda , o carro é o 1.0 de cilindrada de 50 cavalos 6n de 1998 do 06 , sera que tenho um problema na odb ou sera que colocaram nalguma altura um tacografo errado e daí fazer o que esta a fazer ... estou sem ideias e desesperado.... obrigado pela compreensão e pelo seu tempo forte abraço aqui do ribatejo .

Hahaha haha I know ur pain :) I got the same problems :)) humans... Big messsss with cables :) and now how to find the idiots ideas? Haha ps. Plug from Mic was in antena :) plus other mix today i have to take out bordnetz :) no power going to interior lights was extra cable from some fuse like a by pass mother f... And this car got lots of things to do... :(
