This is hands down THE best instructional on Fuel Gauge and Sender issues on KZbin. I've watched dozens that don't get anywhere near the clarity and detail that this offers. This doesn't just apply to trucks but explains everything I needed to know for my Mopar gauge issues. You're a legend Kevin ... you should put out a series of instructional videos on Automotive Engineering ... there is a massive audience for it.

Just when you think everything is right...surprise! Prepping for a car show and noticed the needle on my TA's gas gauge did not move and was buried at the 4 o'clock position (past full) when the engine was started. In the off position it is in the same place. Need to pull out the old Pontiac Service Manual and review along with this video. Electrical is not my favorite problem to figure out. Sometimes I wish a BIG hammer would work...it doesn't. Thank's Kevin for another great video.

One more thing, the float sensor can be serviced in many cases. The arm cover should be able to come off and inside that box there can be rust or corrosion or something that obstructed sensing by the potentiometer or smooth travel of the arm. Clean it all up and try it. It might need sanding, contact cleaner, you'll see what it needs.

I took it to Hyundai for checking because I had issue with my fuel gauge reading and they concluded by saying I need to get my instrument cluster replaced, which too much for to afford. I'll have to put this to the test. I've got a 72 Blazer with a misfunctioning fuel gauge. It keeps track of my fuel but only goes to just above the quarter tank mark. So quarter tank is actually full, eighth tank is actually a half tank etc. I've replaced the sending unit, the gauge, the wiring, and the grounds that I can find. The only thing left seems to be the printed circuit board.

A good learning,..but I can't seem to get my brand new meter to go to full with the sensor disconnected and 12v applied to the ignition terminal. With ground to ground, sensor to sensor, and ignition 12v to ignition terminal my needle barely moves and rests just at 'E'. I've measured 70 ohms with two different meters from ground at tank to sensor on tank. I measured 70 ohms at gauge location from sensor lead to ground under dash. What do I need to do??

What would cause a guage to read well below e when I key on ? The needle will go all the way to the left when it’s keyed on
@tayro7265 Жыл бұрын
I've never seen a gauge re-calibration video. The 70's Chevy gauges can be re-calibrated. Maybe others, I don't know. Have you ever had an old Chevy and the fuel gauge "worked" but didn't show the correct fuel level? The needle never goes to full or goes past full. Or when it's empty the needle is sitting on a quarter tank. Like the man said three times, "It's a range. Not an exact measurement." So how do you get the gauge to jive with the range of the sending unit? How can you custimize your fuel gauges displayed reference points? The hard part is get the lense off and the sending unit out.

I have a 71 Chevelle I pulled the fuel tank and replaced the sending/float unit because the gauge would stick on fuel and drop and start reading at some point. I just never knew when it was going to drop and start reading. I noticed that the stop tabs for full and empty were bent off to the side. When I pushed the float all the way up past the full tab it would stick there. So when I installed the new sending unit I did not bend the tabs. Now when the tank is full the gauge read between 3/4 and 1/2. Once the fuel gets down between 3/4 and 1/2 then the gauge works. Any ideas on what’s wrong?

So..2 years ago, I asked a mechanic to replace my 1998 Dodge Caravan 2.4L fuel filter that was changed 22 years ago. When he did it he cracked the fuel pump connectors and it leaked gas. I paid for the part and he did labor free. Bosch. The gauge read low. Still had 5 gallons left when gauge was at E. He replaced it and same level issue. I said forget it and was same for 2 years and 2 months. The sensor started making the fuel gauge needle go down and the chime came on with the gas tank idiot light coming on. I GOOGLED it and saw complaints like this and saw might be caused by sulfur in gas tarnishing the metal on the sensor metal.. I put in 2 bottles of Techron plus and for a time chime was lot less but now is awful!. So far I can't find what metal the sensor windings are made of for BOSCH. I see 2 brands, one using gold (Delphi) and other silver palladium. THEN... I see ranges of 70 to 1050 OHMS for replacement pumps (ON Rock Auto info on their pump assortments. and then I see 33 to 240 for Bosch and American makes. I was about to put a cheat resistor in the harness to make it so I could stop the low level CHIME stop. BUT now I don't know what value to put in. I was going to put in a 680 or 750 OHM but when I saw this new range. I put a temp hold on this cheat. The gauge anti- slosh makes the needle move slower but the chime comes on right away. I think the float needle is getting to a dead high OHM spot on the sensor. I found out a couple weeks ago that Bosch went to a lifetime warranty.. but there are qualifiers and so I will see what push back I get from Bosch.

Hey Kevin. Why don't you just test the send unit at the pump and thus verify the entire circuit or not them u could go back and start at the battery. Or you could just work backwards.
@truthteller95623 жыл бұрын
@Carlos Roque yes there are lots of way to test the pump. You could test the resistance. You could unplug it and give it a ground and power it up with 12v. The easiest way to give it a very basic test is to have someone cycle the key from off to on a few times and while the do that wack the bottom of the tank with a rubber mallet. Preferably right under the pump. You can tell where the pump is by looking for a maybe 6 to 8" diameter circle in the bottom of the tank. Usually if the pump is the issue it will kick on. But only for about 2 seconds. To prime the line and once the car starts it will come back on.
@shooterpcb2 жыл бұрын
The old trucks do not have electric fuel pumps. They use a mechanical pump mounted to the block. If you’ve upgraded to an electric pump (usually with a pressure regulator for a carburetor use) then you’d be able to diagnose differently.
