The manual calls for dropping the transmission on my 2011. Can it be done without lifting the cab or dropping the transmission? My truck is bone stock low miles just has stuck turbo vanes. I don't have access to a lift so dropping the trans isn't something i can do.

I have done this job on the manually as well and I did not remove the transmission. If I remember checker l correctly I think it calls to remove the transmission on the auto as well. I think it is due to getting the bolts for the up pipes, may be wrong any that but I'm thinking that is the reasoning behind it.

It's an automatic just meant that the shop manual calls for dropping the transmission. As well can it be done without dropping the transmission with the EGR in place?

@simonc8469 yes you can do it. I have before. It takes a little more stuff to be removed but it can be done.

how did the 12pt 12mm uppipe bolts come out? did any snap? im nervous about removing them i really dont want to snap one. I live in California so not much rust but have over 400k miles on the original turbo on the LLY duramax

No I did not break any on this one I believe but I did have one on another that did break off. They were easy to get out though. I just heated up the turbo around the bolts and welded a nut to them.

@operationoverhaul Thanks for the quick reply. I'm going to tackle the job soon, just trying to prepare for the worst just in case. Did you have to remove the pedestal or were you able to weld the bolt with it in place? I think I can leave the passenger up-pipe bolts connected at the manifold on the lly so don't have to worry about those.

Getting the clamp off isn't that bad but getting the pipe to come off of the turbo is the hard part. I use a pry bar with a striking pad on the handle to knock it off of the turbo. Also, I typically put some Kroil or what ever is your favorite penetrating oil on there as well and let it sit for about an hour before hand.

Currently replacing my turbo with a drop in turbo but having problems getting the six manifold bolts off. Did you attack those bolts all from the top?

Yeah I got them all from up top. They are extremely tight especially if the truck has some higher miles. Also a one inch extention and a flex head ratchet works great for this. I also have an air impact that is low profile. Ill get a link for you

Thanks for the info. Got turbo out yesterday. New turbo is now just sitting in place but nothing buttoned up. Getting the oil return line connected back with gasket is my new issue. Wishing I paid someone to do this lol.

Did you re-use the gasket/ washer that is around the banjo bolt? I normally replace those. Had a lot of oil leaks from re-using them

Did you have to remove the down pipe ? I can’t get to the 6 exhaust bolts

Those 6 bolts are pretty tough to reach and they are normally tight as hell too. I did have to remove my down pipe to reach them and it can be in the turbo pretty tight as well. I had to knock mine out with a hammer and drift/punch to get it out of the turbo. I have heated up the down pipe at the turbo before to get it to free up.

It depends on if the truck is stock or if it is deleted. If you have never performed this job before I would set aside a weekend to complete it and allow for anything that could go wrong. The hardest bolts to me are the up pipe bolts and sometimes getting the down pipe off

@Zenpiie set aside 3 weeks lol but if you are good with doing all of that the turbo will be pretty straight forward for you. You could knock that out in a day if you stayed on it.

I know some people who have completed this without doing it but they always said that it would have been way easier if they would have pulled it. I have never tried it personally so I would can not say which is easier to do.

Not at all. Just get the shield off unbolted. Not even out. Everyone also says to unbolt the tranny dipstick tube. I didnt have to because I left the drivers side heat shield in there loose. You do need to take off down pipe off to get to the bottom two bolts that fasten the up pipes into the turbo pedestal.

Also, soak those top bolts with penetrant. I used a heat gun to get them good and warm. They came out pretty easy. I tried it before soaking them and they were not budging.

On the LML, the mounting bolts are 15 mm

@@logan8256 I try to use a smaller size and try to snap the head off then if that didn't work I would use a rounded bolt socket first and see if I could get it out and if that doesn't work then try cutting or torching it out but put fire blankets everywhere I could.
