Tyrion’s quote in ACOK is essentially the key to the series. “It all goes back and back to our parents and their parents before them. We are puppets dancing on our parents’ strings, and one day our children will pick up our strings and dance in our stead.” I’m sure I butchered the quote, but the idea of playing a role you did not choose is the main cause of strife in the story and fits with idea of rehashing ancient legends. This has been repeated ad infinitum.

This is just the natural order. This is how it is in real life too. We inherit personality traits and general level of intelligence from our parents, barring unlucky genetic issues that override it, think like down syndrome. Aside from that minority, you are your ancestors and without them, you wouldnt be here. And the more recent your ancestors. The more likely you are to be similar to them.

@@raaplexis2978 I sort of disagree. You come from your ancestors and they will always be a part of your history, but 'intelligence' being based mainly on genetics has been more on more disproven as time goes along. Not only is our perception of intelligence highly subjective(is being very good at a particular sport and mastering the moves needed to win in that sport, intelligence? Some would say yes and some would say it's skill and what separates skill from intelligence anyway?) and knowledge in certain aspects can be determined moreso by being raised with said knowledge rather than inherently knowing that thing more. For example, let's say two extraordinary middle class mathematicians have a child and this child is swapped with another child from a family of supposedly "ordinary", middle class people. The "ordinary" child and this mathematician's child go through the same school system, but the ordinary child, on top of going to school has math geniuses who help understand his class materials and even give him extra homework for him to better understand what he learns in class while the mathematician's child just goes to school, goes back home, maybe gets a little bit of help from his parents, but not as much as in the first case and while he gets a good middle class education, he doesn't as much support as in the first case, hence the ordinary child raised by math geniuses gets amazing grades while the math geniuses' child gets decent grades, but not as good raised by the math geniuses. Both children generally had the same quality of life with the exception of environmental differences when it came to educational support. Your environment determines your knowledge of certain topics and specialties moreso than your parentage. Your father being Neil Degrasse Tyson doesn't necessarily mean you will be a science wiz. That's why supporting kids' education and helping them to understand the material in class is so important. Yes, in cases such as some disabilities, genetics does play a role as some forms of special needs are inherited and some special needs affect mental faculties, but conflating that as all intelligence is mainly inheritable and that inteligence is one concrete thing that can be measured would be an overstepping it.

Absolutely brilliant video, my man. You really condensed your long form into something that should be more accessible to the KZbin crowd. There are a lot of great content makers in the community, but you make a unique and wonderful addition that makes you stand out. KZbin is normally reserved for 'Top 10 WTF' and 'Is Jorah/Davos/Ser Pounce/Moonboy Azhor Ahai?!' videos, but I hope your strong literary analysis makes a lot of new Mythological Astronomers out of some viewers. Don't stop doing what you're doing. Thank you.

Many thanks ship-sinker! Shall I call you CrowsEye? He's going to be sinking some ships in TWOW I am thinking. Anyway, I appreciate the specific feedback; you got the idea of what I was trying to do here. I find that writing a short(er) script is harder than writing a long one! But I did my best to push the most important ideas forward. Of course the idea is to lure more people in to the pod, so we'll see what happens. Feel free to share! Cheers, LmL

Yeah, I think people are taking it too far. You know things are going wrong somewhere when "Born under a bleeding star" Gets stretched to mean, "Born in a bed near a sword made from a meteorite, which has a bit of blood on it". Like...what the Hell! "Under" is a very different thing to "next to". "Bleeding" is not the same thing as "has a bit of blood on it". And a sword is not a star. Even if it's made from a meteorite, which is ALSO not a star. People are taking everything everyone says as though it's a prophecy and it has to come true. Even Gurm himself has said that Azor Ahai is just a story that happens to exist in his world. Which kinda shits all over the assumption that he even existed in the first place, let alone that he was prophesied to come back. And even a prophecy that he'd come back, is not a guarantee that he will come back. In fact, it's kind of a guarantee that he won't. Since it's pretty shitty writing to tell everyone what's about to happen. I really hope that all the characters learn the lesson that the future can't be seen because it hasn't happened yet, and to stop buying into prophecies. I think the story is setting that up for Cersei. I think she will find out that Maggie the Frog couldn't see the future at all, and that she essentially made the prophecy come true through her own actions. And, if that prophecy comes true, even accidentally, I think no other will. We're not gonna get TWO prophecies coming true. Hopefully everyone is forced to realise that they have to take responsibility themselves, and not wait for a last minute rescue from Santa Claus.

While listening to this I was reminded of The Song of the Sea written by some maester (sorry I don't have my book in front of me). He was proposing the Arm of Dorne was not flooded by the children, but by some global warming type event that melted their world's version of the polar ice caps. If a moon was destroyed or knocked out of orbit by a massive comet that would definitely affect the tide. The comet or a piece of it could have even crashed into the ice caps. Maybe there's something to this? Maybe the Children didn't create that catastrophe, but harnessed their power to direct it toward the arm. They might not have even been fully aware and this could be why it was far less effective when they tried it on the neck later. And if the comet did crash in the far north then that fits with the stories claiming the night descended from the north and it could look like the others were bringing the night and the storm. Also a giant comet crashing in or near their homeland is a pretty good motivation for the Others to move south.

If you're one of the people who believes that ASoIaF is post-apocalyptic and used to have a highly advanced civilization, there's a few ways that could play into it. Usage of fossil fuels could have contributed to the possible climate change that destroyed the Arm of Dorne. I'm one of the people who thinks there's a secret bunker on the Isle of Faces and who knows, maybe this bunker could have access to doomsday weapons or technology that alters the weather.

@DavidLightbringer
@DavidLightbringer 7 жыл бұрын
Right on, thanks for saying so! The podcast is the main thing, but it sorely needed a bridge or user-friendly intro or something, which is what the video is supposed to be. If you dig the general style of analysis, you will like the podcasts... because only this video is sooooo condensed from the actual depth of detail going on in the books. For example, the podcast version of this body of ideas goes into the symbol of the dragon eggs - every time they appear, they give clues about the meteor shower. Every time we go to the Island of Dragonstone, it's the same type of symbolism. A dragon stone and a stone dragon egg are the same thing, you know? So one time at Dragonstone, the campfires look like a field of fallen stars, while Drogon's black egg causes a thousand dust motes to light up like fireflies in the setting sun or something like that. And that's just dragon eggs and stones - every single symbol in ASOIAF works that way, with countless related incarnations woven through the series that are all using the same language and symbolism. So in the podcast, we take the time to follow a symbol through multiple scenes, and then try to understand what it is saying. By the time you are done looking at all the scenes with dragon eggs and Dragonstone in AGOT & ACOK, you can see the picture George is painting - a thousand thousand fiery dragons coming from the moon. Also, I will mention that if you are into European folklore, particularly green man / horned god type stuff, you can check out the Sacred Order of Green Zombies series. The Bloodstone Compendium and Weirwood Compendium are both a series of podcasts which go in sequential order, but the Green Zombies is a stand alone that does not require you to have read any of my other stuff and can be listened to at any time. A lot of people like that series, as it's all about resurrecting Jon Snow and Coldhands and the last hero and greenseer resurrection, that sort of thing, and I get into the weird origins of Santa Claus folklore. :)

Thanks for this video and sharing your thoughts and theories! I have often thought that there must actually be normal seasons on Planetos, just with very minimal changes to the world that are not observed by most people and don't impact their lives much. Maybe this world has only a very slightly tilted axis. This is how people know when the years pass, and perhaps is the cause of the "summer snows" in the North. One possible explanation for the long, erratic climate shifts the characters refer to as seasons could be an erratically orbiting, unevenly shaped debris cloud from a destroyed moon or other celestial body. Though there is also magic, of course!

@@DavidLightbringer I really wish I liked Bran. He shares quite a few qualities my spawn aka children have and I think that's why I can not seem to actually enjoy his character fully. I know that sounds strange because Bran is the one character most people find so hard to connect with but he is just to much like my own kids, they know things they shouldn't, they are moody over logical things, it feels like they warg into one wild animals on a whim. Bran is just someone who has all the bad qualities of the people I adore and love most in the world so I never like him through my eyes when I read him but truly the way you illustrate his character makes me not want to put him down a moon door for a long night timeout if you get my drift, so yeah. I like your videos. You make my asoiaf experience 100% better. And side note. I think I've found the one gripe over all your lenses to view the story and why I 1/9 times get a grumpy feel at your analysis. You do a fantastic job seeing the big picture but the parts that I feel intuitively connected to logically tend to be glossed over because I'm a mother. Lot's of the themes that I focus on are a mother linked and you touch on them but never fully touch on the issue because rightfully so you can't really (i wouldn't trust my husband to talk about motherhood either so its not a guy thing its a you've never been "mom" in all connotations of the word) makes it hard for you to truly talk about. Its a me thing and I am over it, for the most part; Other Mother, we might need some words. If you have reached the end you get a cool, cool, cool, and seriously you are great at what you do. Honestly it's 50/50 listen to current shows or rewatch shows or rewatch LML and finally comment. We will see what shows you beat our durring covid schooling.

I absolutely love your podcasts, it's so great to see you try out some KZbin videos too, great way to condense your ASOIAF theories and analysis. Also loved the videos you've done with History of Westeros too! I was thinking of a few things in regards to Jamie's first Weirwood dream. First off is Rhaegar in this dream supposed to be a symbol for a comet or even lightbringer being tempered? He is a dragon after all. I also wondered about the properties of both magical stones. "And beside them, crowned in mist and grief with his long hair streaming behind him, rode Rhaegar Targaryen, Prince of Dragonstone" "Prince Rhaegar burned with a cold light, now white, now red, now dark." He's a literal Prince that Was Promised/Azor Ahai figure that somewhat resembles the comet... Also, could the white sword Dawn, be made from a the original meteorite before a process that transforms or corrupts it using fire in some way? I'm thinking the oily black stone is the fire transformed variant of the cold white meteor. Essentially I'm also wondering if the Daynes originally followed the path of the comet not from the ground, but from the stars; as in they were traveling with it or just behind it. That would make the early ancestors of House Dayne the closest that we have in the story to God's on Earth. Which could explain why the traveller wasn't killed when the comet impacted the earth. The meteor could even have even landed in the gods eye. Although this is all wild speculation on my part though. The second thing is that I believe that the The Maiden-Made-of-Light is turned her back on the world when she became the Night's Queen. In the modern day, the cause for Cersei turning her back could possibly be linked to Jamie... "Sister, why has Father brought us here?" "Us? This is your place, Brother. This is your darkness." I'm not saying he is going to kill her necessarily, not directly anyway. His growing affection for "Brienne-the-Beauty" (who now has a "woman's shape" in the dream) will be Cersei's final undoing who will have lost everything at that point. Brienne-the-Beauty has an inner beauty Cersei will never have; she is younger and more beautiful. Cersei is also surrounded by ice and fire symbolism at various points in the story either being compared to wildfire or being cold, particularly early on in a GoT where she is at points even surrounded in snow and ice. "The others take my wife" Robert muttered sourly... Oh, Cersei is lovely to look at, truly, but cold..." The dead dire wolf found by the Starks at the beginning of the books is also covered in ice with the faint smell of corruption sticking to it like a woman's perfume. Now looking at the the WoW Aeron chapter, if Euron is indeed working for the Others, I believe that Cersei is also the (undead) woman next to him in Aeron's vision. The quote in the second vision seems to match up to this quote from Jamie's dream: "and beside Lord Tywin stood his sister, pale and beautiful, a torch burning in her hand." "Beside him stood a shadow in woman’s form, long and tall and terrible, her hands alive with pale white fire. Dwarves capered for their amusement, male and female, naked and misshapen, locked in carnal embrace, biting and tearing at each other as Euron and his mate laughed and laughed and laughed." We could also go as far to say that Cersei is tall and terrible. She is also often referred to a pale, with Cersei even describing herself as looking like a corpse whenever she wears black. Also, the Night's Queen could be described as a beautiful Corpse Queen... Finally, might be a bit of a stretch, but I'm wondering if the Maggi the Frog prophecy describes two deaths of Cersei. The first is via the Tears of Lys or strangling as a result of Cersei (a possible dragon in my eyes) being driven to wed Balon's younger brother Euron, which would be after Cersei realises Jamie has abandoned her and their children for Brienne-the-Beauty. The second death could be some kind of a mercy killing Nissa Nissa style at the hands of Jamie after she becomes the wild fire wielding Night's Queen. Just to tie it up, his sword could even light with a pale blue flame similar to the Weirwood dream, although that might possibly be a little on the nose... Anyway, sorry for the HUGE post! hopefully this doesn't sound too mad, I just really love your podcasts and thought that you might set me straight if my theories are too tinfoil!

Nukes are usually referred to as the sword of Damocles. Dragons are a metaphorical flaming sword called light bringer. Dragons are formidable weapons capable of inimaginable destruction, able to melt stone with their fire. Harenhall is Hiroshima and dragons are medieval fantasy nukes, convince me otherwise. Haha

I've always wondered if Planetos is possibly shaped like a football w/ the length being North to South. Like a football standing upright; my only "clues" are that this could explain the year-long Seasons why that one Dragon Rider rode South for 3 yrs and never found the other side of the land mass she was exploring. I only bring this idea up because maybe the football-shaped planet also had 2 moons that orbited around the planet; one North to South & the other East to West. Perhaps they got caught in each other's orbits on the rare occasion they got close & one broke; sending meteors down and causing a fiery bleeding-star shower. And maybe one of the moons were inhabited by dragons, somehow. It's thin I admit but trying to solve a puzzle w/o all the pieces is half the fun, right? :S

I notice two other parallels that you do not touch on. Aegon the Conqueror had 2 wives.... or 2 moons.... and then he lost one, the warmer one, and the colder one remained. Secondly, the other bloody sword.... Lady Dustin relays the story of Brandon... who said something to the effect that there is no sword like a bloody sword. I wonder if there is any connection to be made in these tales.

@durrandurrandon6451

Well this is always the problem. It can almost be a conversation killer when a show only watcher or a casual reader and me my opinion on how the story will end or which character uhh s Azor Ahai, and I'm like, "well, do you have half an hour minimum to talk to me about comparative mythology, before I answer your question?" I think this is a good summary though. It's hard to condense.

Great video. Your work is always interesting, enlightening, and very thought provoking. Do you think that the signs and parallels indicate that another Long Night is on the way? For instance: Last time, Planetos experienced a huge natural disaster on magical steroids when it was struck by the first comet. This time though, unless I am mistaken, it seems that the comet just passes them by. Do you think that some sort of magical astrological impact is important in determining the likelihood of another Long Night?
@DavidLightbringer
@DavidLightbringer 7 жыл бұрын
Cameron Miller you are correct, and thanks for your kind words. I do however think the red comet will be back soon and we will get some fireworks. And then there's this quote from George... "Asked how he will possibly wind up all of the story’s sprawling threads in the next two books, Martin revealed that he has a back-up plan. “Two big books, 1,500 manuscript pages each-that’s 3,000 pages,” Martin says of the space he has to wrap up. “I think I have a good shot. And you know, if I really get pressed, I’ve already established that red comet. I can just have it hit Westeros and wipe out all life,” he says." www.google.com/amp/www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2013/11/george-r-r-martin-game-of-thrones-ending/amp

I belived that the sun and two moons = the Targaryen male/king/brother and two women/wifes/sisters. So when Dany married Drogo instead of her brother, the second moon dissapeared from the story... and we've got dragons as a bonus. Or as a reward, since the abomination was over. But now I see that, beside Daenerys and Viserys, there was no other woman anyway, so, no two moons to start. My theory is now dust, in fact was dust from the start, I just did not saw it. After listening to this video, what you say makes alot of sense, but is not easy to see if someone does not point it out to you. So, thank you Lml. You are great.

Valyrian steel could be made from moon meteorite like dawn, and that's why its so rare and can only be reforged. It fits with the theme of dragons, fire and meteors. Dragon steel sounds like it was probably made by dragon fire, but could possibly be made by metaphoric dragon meteorites.

Amazing video.............. Any thoughts on the coming long night also being a global event?
@DavidLightbringer
@DavidLightbringer 7 жыл бұрын
Yes. For the most part I am more concerned with unravelling the past than predicting the future, but of course in a fractal story like this, the past and future should rhyme in some sense. So, my one big prediction is that we will indeed get another moon cracking event, though I do not think it will destroy the moon (it's pretty basic science that without a moon, Planetos or Earth would be doomed; but I think it's also clear George is only loosely following sciency ideas, just enough to make good fantasy. Anyway, I do not know if the show will do it, but I have 2 reasons to think it will happen in the book: 1.) if the mechanism for causing the previous LN was a magic moon meteor, it stands to reason we will need another meteor to get another LN 2.) I think I am seeing foreshadowing of this event, though it is tricky because there's always a question of whether a scene is "rear-shadowing" the past or foreshadowing the future I would guess this will happen at the end of TWOW, when we might expect the new LN to officially fall. The Others cannot really invade until the sun is hidden during the day, and we all expect a new LN to happen, so I am thinking the mechanism will again be a meteor. It's basically just a fancy way for something to happen that we all expect will happen - a new LN.

Enjoying your takes, man. The only thing is, I don't think Azor really caused anything. It's how folk tales often work: ppl see th sun pierce the moon with a sword of fire, then a guy pops up with a fiery sword to save the day and everyone assumes he must be the one responsible.

A more literal interpretation of the legend would be an event like the Shoemaker-Levy 9 with a comet (second moon) breaking up and bombarding the planet with several or even dozens of major impacts and thousands of smaller impacts, air burst, and burn outs.
