This Learning Modular Synthesis movie takes you on a guided tour of the user interface in Arturia Modular V's software emulation of a classic Moog modular synthesizer. While we're at it, we'll "patch" a typical subtractive synthesis "voice", checking our progress each step of the way.

I learned more in this one 14 minute video than I ever did from days of watching other tutorial videos. Thanks for the great introduction!

This is a great tutorial. I've had this synth sitting on my machine for over a year and only played around with the presets, not really know ing what I was doing. You've inspired me to jump in and get my hands dirty creating something from scratch. Thank you.

Excellent! I have a real Moog Modular 3C. I love it but it's 45 years old and has some problems. The main one is not polyphonic. Also, it hums and the pots and connectors are very noisy, not to mention you can't save your patches. Anyway. thanks for showing the basic behind-the-surface routings that are not present in the hardware version. I was having trouble doing basic patches on the Arturia because I was not finding these normals. You do a great job. You obviously thought about what you are going to do before you record your program. That is pretty rare on KZbin tutorials.

Thanks for the kind words, and great to hear you still have a Model IIIC! Yes, I agree some of the under-the-hood default connections can be initially confusing. When recording videos, I always try to think of how a new user is going to see the same thing, and anticipate their questions when I can.

Hi, great video! I am still trying to fully understand how the sequencer works. At the moment I am not understanding why the fifth Link led (the red ones) is turned off by default and actually works as inverted in comparison to the other 7 switches. Seems very akward

Sorry, but I still do not understand how you activated the keyboard at the very beginning of the video. I did not see anything to press, but she began to make sounds. I will look for it but I will be grateful if you tell me in the comment how to do it.

can you map the key board to youre desktop keyboard without need to buy a midi controller?

There is a virtual keyboard at the bottom of the screen in Modular V (I've not scrolled down to it in this video; that's why you can't see it), where you can click on keys to play it. I just did a quick scan through the manual and did not see a place where you can use the keys on your computer's keyboard. But fortunately, USB keyboard controllers have come down as low as $40 for a new one (midiplus AKM320 through Amazon); used ones can be found even cheaper.

yeah but I cant hold one of the notes down and tweak knobs in real time if im clicking on the keyboard.

I hear you. And I'm guessing a cheap USB keyboard is out of the question? I did a little Googling about turning a computer keyboard into a MIDI keyboard, and found this for the Mac; there may be other solutions available as well: www.synthtopia.com/content/2010/12/28/xtrument-midi-controller/

The normalisation in these kind of software synths is quite annoying. Really hard to determine what one is actually doing.
@LearningModular
@LearningModular 7 жыл бұрын
I agree. Fortunately, there's relatively little normalization in Modular V: the master control voltage and gate. And although I personally like to see every cable and connection, I could see where for the user it would get a bit annoying and add to the on-screen clutter to have to make those particular connections. Perhaps a compromise would have been making those menus for normalled connections a lot more obvious than the innocuous icons they hide behind now.
