I did the bed extension probably 2 years and change ago, well worth it. ECM is electrochemical machining, salt water plus electricity with zero tool erosion and almost no heat so you can work hardened material to tight tolerance with no worries, its a neat process, they use it commercially on stuff like turbine blades and what not as I understand. I've been looking into trying it out. Du Pa Co did anesthesia equipment, so some sort of medical gas widget, I'd have to ask my dad if he's ever seen one.

I just did the LMS bed extension and followed the instructions placing the gear rack 1 3/4" From the edge of the front hole ( if you watch my video you will see how I did it) And I didn't have a problem. Are you sure they sent you the right rack? I still have 1/2" of rack left when going all the way to the end of the machine bed.
@TheMiniMachineShop Жыл бұрын
Good point never thought of having the wrong rack mine is about 16" and yours?
@mrmrwilem4789 Жыл бұрын
@@TheMiniMachineShop for what it’s worth and mainly to help others on this same journey, I am in the middle of doing one now and got all wrapped up in this 1-3/4 v the 2” Issue. 2” wouldn’t hurt anything, but there certainly is 1/2 inch of rack gear left when the carriage hits the lead screw pillar block when using the recommended 1-3/4 from the edge of the hole dimension. So I am Not sure what happened with yours but I’m thinking it was just an error. My rack gear is 16” with five screws. Thanks for sharing your video. Certainty made me a little more careful and to think twice and drill once. Cheers bud!

Yeah, any time i recommend something it sells out fast so the price of what's left jumps up. Hope you enjoy the book! Cheers.

Did you make a vid on your tailstock lock mod? I bought LMS version for my 93799 and do not like it one bit. Ordered the bed extention earlier today. The extra 4 inches will be golden.

Hello Dave, I think it was well worth doing the upgrade... and taking the time to repaint it. Take care. Paul,,

I'm looking forward to mine arriving. I ordered a rebranded sieg C2 from a company called Vevor and the bed was junk fresh out of the crate. The bottom of the ways were machined with about 3/32 of taper per foot so its impossible to use the tailstock. However it showed up to my door for 388 bucks so not complaining to much. So rather than ordering the same 14" bed, i went with the upgrade as it was on sale. Buy once, cry once. So soon I'll be swapping the bed on mine before it even makes its first chips.
@TheMiniMachineShop7 ай бұрын
Wow heard a lot on Vevor but never that bad. I am extremely happy with my upgrade and hope it works out for you. Check out Deez Workshop and his problems. BTW I like your name.

I used to work for a company that manufactured portable sawmills. I t drilled a hole in the wrong place. My boss told me to tap it and put a Allen head screw in it. Then I stamped OIL beside it.😅

What 12 x 30 did you buy? Was it a used one?
@kimber19586 ай бұрын
I’m sorry for the misunderstanding. I bought a Pratt and Whitney 12 x 30 circa 1943. It was a good life for a good price because not a real popular brand but all the same. It is a good used machine. However, I do miss my mini lathe, I often think about buying another one. I certainly regret selling mine but I would get the 16 inch extension bed believe it’s well worth it. Good value thanks for your comment. Hope I answer your questions.

The unknown item looks like a high pressure valve that attaches to an O2 tank. I bought something similar for recharging my precharged pneumatic air rifle with an O2 cylinder.
@TheMiniMachineShop Жыл бұрын
You're close it is for a high-pressure tank, but the question is what is in the tank? And the interesting part is if you look at it it's not a valve!

Fun to watch the conversion although I had trouble understanding anything you said. That's OK. I turned off the sound and turned on the captions. Worked out OK. The likely hood of an amateur machinist like me turning out any high quality work doesn't justify the expense of a bigger fancy lathe. I'm hardly a space shuttle machinist after all. One thing I've often wondered about is if they mostly come from the same or other factories in close proximity then why all the brand names? Reminds me of the old days in the US... in the late 19th century for instance, when virutally everyone in the countryside had a shotgun. They came branded to the hardware store chain in which they were sold. I have an old JC Higgins... Used to be a national brand. Conversions are fun. Give me something to do in my croaky old age.... Decrepitude here I come for fist lets modify this lathe.
