interestingly, "secondary air" was pretty exclusive to British engines, in North America, the larger loading gauge meant a larger firebox which allowed for more time for the gasses to burn and the larger cylinders and tubes also meant a far more violent draft meaning that the primary air source would provide more then enough oxygen that a secondary air source was generally not needed.
