The MIJ So Cal that was made around 2010 was an amazing guitar. Dimarzios, awesome neck with rolled edges, perfect frets with a hardcase for $1000. One of the best deals ever. I highly regret having sold mine.

I had two MIJ Model 5's (red and white) back in the late 80s. They had Kahler trems and the locking nut behind the regular nut. I recall them being really nice guitars so long as you did not use the tremolo. I now have a 2015 MIM SoCal Style 1 (Strat) and a 2017 MIM San Dimas Style 2 (Tele) both with OEM Floyds. If the MIJ guitars had been this good I would never have sold them.

Can you explain some of the body names? I wanted to buy the Adrian Smith Jackson signature guitar until I realized it was labeled San Dimas, "DINKY". I hate dinky bodies !!! Are San Dimas guitars usually the same size as a strat body unless labeled dinky? How does that work? I want a full sized strat body.

What do you think of the roughly 300 of the 1988 Model 5A's that became Model 5FX? I have one that got the slanted neck pickup, the 3 way toggle, and a tone knob. It's very near mint. I got it as a HS Graduation gift in 1990, so I've had it 30 years

I have the MIM So Cal just like yours, I almost bought a Model 6 in 87 but my parents threw in an extra $800 so I got a USA Jackson DK. Yup... when we talk about pricing today, a USA DK was about $1700 back then (it had a special crackle finish and was signed by Grover). Like the older ones you showed it had the same Jackson FR and the nasty behind the nut locking system... which never worked that well for me, I eventually replaced it with an actual locking nut. GREAT Collection!

I have an , 86 model Les Paul custom i bought myself. But the Charvel i came across one i traded for a looper station its older but all the stamps are gone he told me he took the tuners off cuz they wouldn't stay in tune . So i had to drill bigger holes for lock tuners i went with . They made a big difference. The kneck plate is blank and chrome which i googled and it put it at 1981 which im really not sure but it was like the white one with the humbucker in the back and 2 single coils in the front the humbucker seems to be added later . The one thing that I wouldn't have made the deal but the kneck is straight. Theres a slot for a trembolo bar i haven't been using one since the les Paul was my go to guitar. I have another 80 something model Ovation. The only regret i have is when i was 15 im 58 now my dad brought me home a looked like a 71 model SG with a bixby bar . If i would have kept it in good shape theres no telling what it could have been worth

I have been playing many years and played professionally until I got married 30 years ago . I have many guitars, like a PRS Cu24, EBMM Axis, Custom Shop LP, vintage Kramer Stagemaster, Vintage Ibanez Alan Holdsworth, Ibanez MB I, along with many other assorted Gibsons, Fenders, Ibanez etc. that I barely play...but I just bought my first Charvel this week. It is a MIM San Dimas in Trans Green Burst Quilt and has already become my favorite guitar. It is also one my least expensive. How I missed out on Charvels over th1e years is beyond me. But better late than never. Interesting and informative video, thanks.

Did Charvel ever have a explorer style guitar. I'd like that..Or a Les Paul style Charvel. I don't think so .I looking for a starbody Had an Original San Dimas With the word Charvel decal in gold..Let someone use it & They pawned it. I'm still in shock. Tone King have you considered professional help? I know it's all good stuff but there's a fine line between collecting and hoarding. I've been through it and there is hope for you. The way I've learned to sell off most of my collection was if i didn't pick up the guitar regularly ,I sold it. Of course if you've got guitars that appreciate in value and look at them as an investment by all means keep em. All the Chinese, Indonesian, Mexican, and anything else made overseas except Japanese and maybe South Korean stuff, say goodbye and sell em. You really only need a Les Paul, a Strat HSS, a shred guitar like ESP or Jackson, and maybe P 90 equipped guitar and you're set. I do like to have 2 or 3 killer amps with a quality splitter so you can get em in phase with each other and a ground lift switch to kill any extra hum. I admit I play through 4 amps at once, A Marshall DSL 100 HR, a Laney IRT 60, an EVH 5150 MK III 6L6, and Bad Cat Hot Cat 30. When you find all the sweet spots on those amps and use em all at once the sound is Mean and Majestic. Nothing like, believe it or not, a Full Bore Metal Pedal pushing all those amps. There is only one way to set that pedal to sound good and when you find it you have found metal incarnate. Just watch it with that pedal because if you turn it a hair the wrong way you will have a terrible sounding wall of amps. If you get it right you have a wall of metal that nothing can destroy. It actually produces a force field that non metal heads cannot penetrate. You can stand inside it and nobody can get to you or the amps to turn them down. That's where to spend the money. I've seen your amps and you too can have your very own metal force field.

The Japanese Charvels were all made by Chushin Gakki, hence the C in the serial number, they are stupendous guitars, some of the best necks ever made, most of the early ones were quartersawn as well. I'd probably keep quiet about the Kahler trems though, they were only fitted to the 1986 guitars because they're dogshit, my 1986 Model 3 will NOT stay in tune because of that POS Kahler.

My biggest issue with the old charvels is they came with either kahler or the jackson Floyd and I didn't like either of them as much as the real, top of the line Floyd.

The Desolations were really high quality for China. Just too narrow of a nut for me.

The Star guitar was only so cheap because it was in a small shop,...if it was sold used on ebay,...it would have been at least twice as much.

Love the Charvel Jake E Lee the best! Just because I’m not a tremolo guy. Nothing against them, just not for me.

Hey T-King, isn't a Charvel basically a hot rodded Fender Strat? Not that it's a bad thing ;-)
