Uh yeah guys, the reason the Bugera sounds so bad in this clip is because he has the treble nearly dimed, and the mids all the way down. When you cut the mids all the way on a Plexi-style amp, you also cut the beefiness and midrange definition out with it. The 3-band EQ is very sensitive on a Plexi-style amp, and unlike many other amp designs, each tone control affects one another. If you cut out any one of these frequencies all the way down, the tone will suffer - just as it did here. The Bugera 1960 amps are actually quite good, especially the Infinium version where they made a few revisions. But I'm sure you know, it's all about setting your amp right, and "The Tone King" didn't have it set right at all, which led to a really bad representation of this amp's abilities. Go play one for yourself through a good quality cab, and I'm sure your view won't be the same. Peace. :)

I agree, I'm thinking of buying a Bugera and for the most part, I've only heard good things about the 1960 Infinium. I've also listened to a couple of demos and I think it sounds pretty sweet! I knew something was up when he kicked out the OD, it sounded like a 14 year olds amp settings when they've just started playing and want a "Super Metal Tone". Been there, done that. Now I tend to back off the gain much more, have a balanced EQ, and a carefully set mid range to get a fat tone with a mellow yet punchy sound (mostly using pickup configuration and volume controls on the guitar). You, sir, make a good point!
@mbeckwith75146 жыл бұрын
Not a loaded question, but what tone settings would you say put the bugera 1960 at it's best place tonally? I know it's subjective, but what do you think? I am having a hard time dialing mine in.

Just love the comments on the marshall being or not being a plexi:-D Not many on this tread know much about marshalls! A plexi is the term used for early marshalls with plexiglas front and back panels... It is not a specific circuit. In 1967 jtm became jmp and they got plexi front and back panels. In 1969 the aluminium front and back panels came and the plexi era was over. The circuit on the marshall 1959 super lead though has remaned pretty much the same from 1969 to 1989 where it was discontinued. Only to be reissued in 1990 as the MKII. In 1981 the jmp era ended and was replaced by the jcm 800 era... Most famous af the jcm 800 series is the 2203 Master lead, but a lot of models has the jcm 800 name. Like the 2204, 2205, 2210 and the... Wait for it... 1959 Super Lead! So even though it's not a plexi, the jcm 800 1959 Super Lead has pretty much the same circuit as the the latest 1959 plexis... And I believe Tk calls it a plexi style amp... Which is quite correct...
@becauseiwasinverted52226 жыл бұрын
A plexi Super Lead is one built sometimes in '67-'69. The "basic" sound may be similar, and the circuits not too different, but the sound difference of these small circuit changes is HUGE! It's so big to the point that saying that the JCM800 1959 is "pretty much the same" as a late '60s Super Lead is wrong. If you don't believe me, listen to Free and Van Halen to get a taste of what a plexi Super Lead sounds like. Then listen to AC/DC, known users of late '70s MKII Super Leads.. Yes, it's _that_ different.

I just may put this on my "to buy" list for 2010. Thanks again

Plexi actually comes from the point to point wiring on a plexi glass board. That was before pcb (print circuits) The transformers from Drake and their wiring and wear; the composite materials that made the resistors and capacitors. Same to a Gibson or Fender from 50'ies sound different to a reissue. I have a couple of Marshalls (15watt and a 100 watt) and to both of them. After 11/2-2 hours of been hearting up the tubes and pushing them, they start to sound warme. Rock on

I LOVE ALL MY BUGERA AMPS!!! I have a tri-rec, a 6262, a 1960, a 1990, and a V55, and a T50... After years of playing name brand amps when I could afford them (with general happiness) I found that these amps actually fill a nice void now that I'm less "affluent" (aka "I am Poor"). The Bugera's sometimes need some "TLC" (my Tri-Rec blew the balance resistor in the P/S so I replaced it with a better version. It's slower to warm up, but one warm it sounds AMAZING!!!). Other than that, and some speaker swaps in my cabs these things are genuinely amazing. I can't say anything bad about them outside of their customer service. If your amp is no longer in production, you will NOT be able to get repair/replacement parts... so learn how to use a multimeter and an o-scope). Aside from that... Enjoy the Music!!!
@BastardBluesBand8 жыл бұрын
Right on !!! I agree with your presentation and the reality of using a pedal to drive the preamp rather than pretending that this style of amp when cranked will be the ultimate metal machine . Right on the money bro !!! With a little EQing on the Bugera it'll do exactly what it's supposed to do .

I have been a sound man for over 20 years, and have recorded a lot of studio music. With a good Eq, compressor, and effect pedals, you can get either one of these amps to sound almost identical. I can get my Fender Twin to sound like a Marshall Plexi. It's all about the way you use the proper effects and eq.

To tell the truth, though I've been greatly tempted to buy a Marshall, the 1987x plexi or the 1959 Lead, I've had to pull in the reins and give myself a good talking to. These are costly items especially since I'd probably also go for a vintage cabinet for looks and sound quality.

I agree...To my ears there is a distinct tonal difference between the Marshall and the Bugera (Marshall winning the battle), but as others have stated, the price point on the Bugera makes it attractive for what you get for your money. I am merely a hobbyist guitar player as well. If I were gigging or playing concerts I would definitely go with the Marshall.

@lmsjr The Marshall Super Lead (Model 1959) is a guitar amplifier head made by Marshall. It was introduced in 1966. It featured 100W of power, two channels, and four inputs, running on KT66 tubes and two 50w output transformers, these amplifiers with two output transformers are usually JTM labeled. In 1967 the EL34 version with a single 100w Output Transformer was released.

the more I listen and go searching amps, I starting to think of this as a sheep in wolfs clothing,meaning I think the tone leans more to the bassman tone in plexi shell. also reading el34bs they are described as 6l6 like when at low volume and more EL34 like when pushed. they share the same panel layout and the plexi is a modified 59 bassman circuit. seems like the best of both worlds combined bassman clean and plexi/bassman crunch. what do you think TTK, got a 59 bman to do a shootout?

@sweetgyy Good point but you might be surprised by the number of "tube" amps that have clipping diodes in to create distortion. This shoot out doesn't really show how wonderfully musical the 1960 is. I'm actually using mine as a bass amp at the moment but was floored by its sweet tone for guitar.

In response to the poster who talks about Plexi referring the material used for the pannels that is correct, but Plexi is a term that all gear lovers use for the Super Lead used by Clapton in Cream, Van Halen on the early albums, Hendrix and countless others. People who make Plexi knock offs might not use plexiglass at all but again they are trying to replicate the wiring schematic by hand using the same tubes with no master volume or gain control and the interesting input configuration and its capabilities for tone shaping. .
@becauseiwasinverted52226 жыл бұрын
The minority who uses the term in this way isn't doing anyone any favors though. Plexi is a more broad term that doesn't cover any specific circuit. Hitting a few extra keys to write "Super Lead" after "plexi" can't be all that bad!

Youll have to forgive me if this question sounds dumb as I am not a genius when it comes to amps, Anyways, I am currently looking to purchase a Marshall 1959 SLP (the same model used by Hendrix and Page), but after watching your video you said that you used a JCM 800 1959, which has kind of thrown me off, because I am currently renting a JCM 800 until a I can afford the SLP, so I was wondering if there are several different model types of 1959 Marshalls, (like JCM, SLP and so on).

Marshall started with aluminium fronts in '62, and for a period they also had plastic fronts.The plexi fronts came in '65 and was replaced with brushed aluminium mid '69. Aluminium chassis changed to steel chassis 66/67. Tubes changed from KT66 to EL34 about the same time. So the Plexi area was from '65 to July '69. Models in that period were: JTM-45 (65-66), JTM-45/100 (late 65-66), JTM "Black flag" or "reverse logo" (late 66-mid 67),

@ragegap By mid 1969 Marshall changed from its Plexi Glass panels to Brushed Aluminium panels, this didn't change anything circuit wise the 69 and 70 Super Lead circuits are identical, although the 66 - 68 circuits are different to the later Metal Panel design. 1972 the circuit evolved with a change in feedback by '73 a new presence circuit was introduced, these changes simply made the voicing of the amplifier gainer, brighter and more agressive. The Super Lead was discontinued in 1981.

I think the Marshall eats in when it comes to Drive .... so much warmer with nice mids and the tone will cut nice but not be so harsh

I think the Bugera is a good sounding amp. But I'd pick the Marshall in this case. But the price difference does make a very good argument for the Bugera. However, neither amp has enough gain for me. I run a custom amp that has as much gain all by itself...or more... as when the overdrive pedal was kicked in during the demo. I like insane gain levels.

@adam10603 yeah, this is the jcm800 2203, not the marshall 1959slp, at least not the one i see on the product range on marshall website :)

@adamsvok the back of the amp was made of plexiglass originally, back in the 60's etc, hence the term plexi, at least i think

The glass on top or the model number doesn't make it a plexi. The name "plexi" might be derived from the fact that they usually had a plexiglass front. But when one calls an amp a "plexi" these days, they're referring to the wiring characteristic to these amps. The best way to recognize that is to look for the 4 input jack up front.
