Transcript of TOM's speech:
Well, this is the end, beautiful friends. After more than 11 years, this is Toonami's final broadcast. It's been a lot of fun, and we'd like to thank each and every one of you who made this journey with us. Toonami wouldn't have been anything without you. Hopefully we've left you with some good memories. So, until we meet again, Stay Gold............ Bang.
R.I.P Toonami: 1997-2008
UPDATE: On 4/1/2012, Toonami returned for one night, taking over for Adult Swim. Steve Blum returned to voice the role of TOM, doing new DVD promos and a review of Mass Effect 3 (which coincidentally he does voicework in)
They aired Bleach, DBZ, Gundam Wing, Tenchi Muyo, Outlaw Star, Big O, Yu Yu Hakusho, Blue Sub No. 06, Trigun, the original B&W Astro Boy, and Gigantor.
On May 26, 2012, Toonami returned to the airwaves, replacing Adult Swim's Saturday Anime Block. Go and tune in every late Saturday night as that's the only way to keep new Toonami up and running into the future. The better the ratings, the better shows they can acquire.
Welcome back, Toonami.

Jack Jenkins 1. CN isn't dead infact its at its best. 2. Toonami's back and better than ever. 3. Adventure Time (season 1-4), Regular Shows, Gumball, Steven Universe, a good chance We Bare Bears will be good, all these shows are the reason why your statement is FALSE....but hey if your tastes are shitty anime feel free to enjoy but CN isn't no where near dead.

They ALL suck. It's called Cartoon NETWORK so they should air both old AND new cartoons. They should know that not EVERYONE likes this new garbage that they air ALL THE TIME. They need to show more classic cartoons, the classic Tom & Jerry, classic Looney Tunes, Scooby Doo (1969) etc.

The line-ups for Toonami were unreal and the interactive plots they had in-between show blocks were magnificent. I grew up watching Dragon Ball Z on Toonami. I will always cherish those memories. I bawled when this ended, I was 25 at the time. Even though I stopped watching toonami and moved on to currently dead sites like Narutowire, I still tooned in and caught the last one. I didn't even know it was over until he said how long it was running for. I called in my younger brother to see it. The moment Tom said "bang" he turned around and went into his room and shut the door while I teared up right there. I now have a Toonami Tom pop figure of his previous form.

You know it's funny. I was a generation behind a similar moment IRL near me probably 2007. A group of young men at a camp had essentially put together what was called a "campfire" where all night from early afternoon a series of skits were performed and some minorly emotional group songs and smores. They were just one generation off from me. So we worshipped them. They managed to somehow, like a greek myth, slay all the tired, old, yet beloved skits before us. Somehow capping the magic and yet blasting us into a different realm. It was incredible. But also it robbed the magic from our turn the next year where we couldn't follow up the act. I know toonami ending was a tad different but in a similar way, it was like the magic died. I feel like most of what i've done this life is be a day late and dollar short. Just a second behind the best of the best. watching magic die instead of replicating it.

I remember this so vividly: I've watched Toonami since I was a kid, and it wasn't until around this time that Toonami became boring (nothing but Naruto reruns and shows already on CN in order to double dip). Then this night I tuned in after a few months, near the end. Then this pops up out of nowhere, with me and my brother staring at it with dropped jaws. We were way older, but we balled like the kids we were when we started this journey... and then they brought it back. Love you, Toonami. :)
@shinymewtwo1367
@shinymewtwo1367 8 жыл бұрын
why did it end
@BlueEchoe5
@BlueEchoe5 8 жыл бұрын
+shiny mewtwo Mostly due to Cartoon Network. The network replaced high-quality shows (ex: Samurai Jack), changed show airings, and decreased the amount of specials (ex: Month of Miyazaki). They also introduced programs like Miguzi that were similar, but very hit or miss. Essentially, CN changed everything too much, and then had the gumption to say it was Toonami's fault. Toonami ended, years passed, April Fools day happened, fans united, and we have it again.
@BlueEchoe5
@BlueEchoe5 8 жыл бұрын
Sadly, yes. Naruto was the prime CN show at one point; it's popularity spread at school where every other kid donned a ninja headband and flaunted hand signatures. However, they halted episodes of it right before what we now know as Shippuden, so Toonami was loaded with reruns of the show. Plus they never had much order so newcomers couldn't follow along, such as an episode featuring Zabuza followed by a chunin exam part, and then something from the first ten episodes.

Toonami (the original run) is probably one of the most cherished parts of my childhood. Nearly every day after school between 1999 and 2002 I used to eagerly come home and watch the broadcast from start to finish. Admittedly I stopped watching it but once in a great while around 2004, but it created my love for anime which still continues to this day, and left me with wonderful memories. Watching this makes me miss it so much. I know it is technically back, but it lacks that special feeling and presence that is what really made the original run so special.

"We'd like to thank each and everyone of you who made this journey with us, Toonami wouldn't be anything without you" Yeeeah. Except that Cartoon Network *_wanted_* it gone on purpose. How you may ask? First by moving it to Saturday afternoons, then re-running Naruto and barely any other anime or any show that fit into Toonami's usual criteria. CN's justification is they don't have licences to certain shows, even their recent reboot seems to imply they have a limited selection of anime shows in general.
@dubla321
@dubla321 6 жыл бұрын
Andrew Vickers wether they wanted to or not, the whole country was facing a recession in 08. they had to save face. with a new president of CN also implementing live action shows and launching DC universe block CN was headed toward a differrnt direction. Honestly to acquire foreign licenses and to ask a company to dub an anime is extremly expensive. it was a no brainer for CN to wear thin their licenses and end Toonami block. with a cluster of new adult swim programming coming down the pipeline there was no need to kick a dead horse. Kids grew up and moved on from toonami. the onky reason it still exist is those same kids whilst growing up expressed an outcry for its return when Adult Swim decided on an april fools joke. eventually, the same fate will come once again. as this reboot is simply a flash in the pan idea that while nostalgic has no substance. the cards have been dealt and anime isnt very profitable any longer. With almost zero creativity coming out of Japan its no wonder they relicensed old shows. eventually, that to will fade however. it was fun while it lasted but the industry as a whole has never been worse. this is why i personally havent watch a new anime in 4 years.

The real reason I think it ended, was because from what I previously heard years ago, was that Apparently CN, they were moving on to do new things, and also the Audiences probably got tired of it, so the audiences and fans moved on to do their own things in their lives. And I think that’s what killed the whole thing.

I played this at work on the anniversary and when he said bang, it was exactly 11PM EST on the dot. It was a sad day when this happened. Even though Toonami is back it doesn't feel the same as when I was a kid. Maybe we moved on with our lives or maybe it was CN's death nail. I know for a fact that Toonami was the gateway to so many things and for a brief few hours, it was our world. Tom made that world better and welcomed us no matter what was going on outside. Toonami got us through 9/11, Katrina, and other events as well as our personal daily struggles in school, family or society. My coworker was also crying when I played it because he knew it was the end of our childhood and of a golden age. Stay Gold Toonami family maybe one day we will have the weekdays back.

jason smith it’s not the same to me. Maybe I grew up or maybe it’s a different taste than what I have now.

I was 14 years old in Mississippi when I saw this (2008) it’s 2:06 am(2023) I am now 29, and tearing up the same way I did the time I saw this. 🥺 Being there for the end can be the most bitter sweet thing. It wasn’t only the cartoons, but life’s events at those times as well as now. I wish you all blessings, stay gold. 🖤

I remember watching this Toonami when i was four, so many good memories. But it left a huge hole in my heart when Toonami left, i remember watching with my cousin, brother and my sister every Saturday night, But on one late night, i tuned on adult swim to see DBZ on. I woke my brother and we started crying with delight, then i woke my sister and we all started watching it, then every saturday i had my eyes peeled open just to watch it. Thanks Adult Swim, i thought you only showed family guy and american dad but you changed my perspective of you guys.

Sheesh I saw this and thought that was recent like a few days ago. I'm so glad I saw this was 15 years ago and Tom is still hosting today. Thanks for posting this.

I gotta say, I didn't watch Toonami growing up. It was on too late passed my bedtime. But I watch this and I get goosebumps from the sincerity of the people who created this block who are really sorry what happened to it. So, I therefore respect the people who put time, effort, and money into the creation of one of the things that made Cartoon Network a great channel. Rest in peace old Toonami.

It's kinda like watching club penguin servers last minutes. I never played or cared about it but it's for sure a bummer
