Euro 1988 was the best Euro in history in my opinion. I watched that tournament and my age was 17 at that time.

I was watching that game when I was 12. That goal by Wim Kieft was indeed a real curiosity - in fact, Ronald Koeman (still one of my favourite players) admitted that he attempted to score directly, but instead of the goal the ball hit his teammates head. And from there it somehow went in. Yes, Holland was extremely lucky at Euro 88, but finally justice came back to them as they had been so unlucky in many occasions throughout the years before. Just remember their curious failure at the qualification for Euro 84, not to mention their lost WC finals back in the 70`s.

We lost only 1-0 to arugably the greatest football team in football history. Thats a win for us Irish I say.

As a dutchman I totally agree. The Irish team put up a hell of a fight and proved to be our toughest opponent.
@Trancymind Жыл бұрын
@@markdeschim8253 What about the Soviet Union in group stage? The Soviets did 3 things the irish couldn't do against the Dutch, score a goal, win the game and leave the dutch scoreless in a match in euro 88.
@markdeschim8253 Жыл бұрын
@@Trancymind True, but the Netherlands pretty much outplayed the Soviet Union in large portions of that first match. More so than in the final, ironically. They created lots of chances but Dasajev had a fantastic game.

@@markdeschim8253 Exactly... and although this short film shows a mainly offending Dutch team, I do believe that they were more dominant against the Soviet Union in the first match, than they were on this field against the Irish, who fought hard for themselves and a 0-0 final score wouldn't have misfit them.... We were lucky that day! (but we deserved to win the tournament, let me be clear on that! What a team it was!!

Given the speed of the ball and distance from the net in the header strike thar occurs at 1:09, I can say it has to be one of the best saves a defender has ever made. It's just tremendous, unbelievable.

If Ireland had Liam Brady, David O'Leary, Mark Lawrenson & Jim Beglin who were all missing by injury and suspension, it would have been a different tournament.

Except they had all them for years and never even qualified for anything. The best "team" isn't necessarily the best players. Moran and McCarthy at the back were a better partnership than Lawrenson & O'Leary, Beglin had effectively been finished for 18 months at this point and a player like Brady was of no use in a system like Charlton's.
@Halotest1004 ай бұрын
@@joseparcenary4706 Ireland qualified with some of these players. Lawrenson got a valuable winner away to Scotland and Brady was still playing for Ireland. I do take your point about Beglin but Lawrenson, Brady and O'Leary would have been a great additions to the squad for Euro '88.

Ireland was great but Netherlands had a shot on post and I also don't quite get why was van Basten whistled off before scoring. They played amazingly, tried and pushed all game and deserved to win against this great Irish team. Fair game, I say.
@joseparcenary47064 ай бұрын
5:30 Note that Van Basten is offside when Koeman takes his shot. In this era, there was no interpretation of "interfering with play". Offside meant offside. The goal should have not been given.
@TheReactor83 ай бұрын
Whine, it was a shot on goal, off side doesn’t count for that. The header was on goal, again off side does not count. Rules back then.
@joseparcenary47063 ай бұрын
@@TheReactor8 If the player is in offside position and the ball is moving in a forward direction = "offside" by the laws of the day. Further, it makes no difference if it's a "shot" or a "pass". The laws referred to the direction of the ball, not the intention. Aside, the fact that you refer to the "rules" of the game (rather than the "laws") indicates to me don't know what the laws of the game are anyway. Your previous post certainly indicates as much.

@@joseparcenary4706You are explaining this to an idiot. He will never understand. You are correct with what you are saying. What made this goal so controversial is that the referee acknowledged that van Basten was offside. However, he applied an idea that had been floating around and was not in the rule book (not interfering with play). The Dutch players acknowledged that it was offside and should not have stood.

I really never understood why the Irish team were under estimated at the time. Like when they beat England, people were predicting an easy England win but the 13 year old me never saw it like that. These Ireland players also played in top English leagues back then for top clubs, so I was curious as to why Ireland were so unfancied. The USSR and the Dutch were just another level up at the time but never did I underestimate this Irish team.

Liam Brady would have been back for this game after getting his international suspension reduced to two games, but then got badly injured near the end of the season playing for West Ham. Just had a look at the Eng v Neth game on this channel, and commented that I thought this Dutch side were a tad over-rated and quite lucky to beat an average English side. This game confirms my suspicions even more. If memory serves, Ireland had beaten England and earned a draw against a good Soviet side. They were at the time considered the "Wimbledon" of international football - relentless defensive midfielders paired with grimly determined defenders playing a seemingly inexorable long ball game. Again, Holland just about - and I mean "just about" by the thinnest of margins - deserved to win this game, with a very jammy goal. Happy memories though. Probably the last good quality European Championship - not a patch on Euro '84 though. Just thinking about it Euro 2000 had some memorable games too, and the Dutch side that played in that were pretty good.

I remember this game. Ireland should have won against the USSR but the Netherlands were really awesome. We defended like lions clearing the ball away but Koeman and Rijkaard would just start another attack, and another and then another.
