Fantastic video, G! I'm glad you finally got to ride LNER! You rode 800103, which is one of my favourite units! That was also the unit I bumped into a friend that I previously had in August, so definitely brought back some memories there! I'm sorry you didn't get north of Newcastle! Back in 2002 or there abouts, I had a interesting journey. I was due to travel on a Cardiff to Paddington as far as Reading and onto Horsham. Ok, at Cardiff, heard a announcement they couldn't locate the driver, so a slight delay already. We was further delayed by the time we reached Bristol Parkway, held at Swindon to allow us to pick up extra passengers from other services. At this point, the guard asked us to remove any unused seat reservation cards as we made a extra stop at Didcot. Opposite me, was a mother with her two daughters on their way to Heathrow. I wonder if they made their flight? Arriving Reading some 90 minutes late, a journey time of 3 hours. Looked for my onward connection, just missed it and meant another hour wait, knowing I would have a further connection at Redhill - knocked it on the head at this point and headed home. Thankfully, this was the only journey where things went pear shaped.

Ah, shame about the melons! Doing the trip the whole way is something of an epic experience, so I hope you get to do it soon. LNER do tend to look after you quite well and first class is very comfortable. Only downside is the food portions are small. Also I find the scenery between London and Newcastle to be very boring, mainly because it's a trip I've done a lot, but further north it gets much more interesting.

What a shame you didn't get to Inverness. You MUST retry and it's really surreal travelling so far on one train, not to mention a beautiful destination. I did the trip in the opposite direction recently (just four days before your attempt) and luckily, everything went smoothly. Travelling south means you depart around 8am so you get to try both the Breakfast and Lunch menus too! A full cooked breakfast while looking out on the snowy Cairngorms takes a lot of beating! Just a note about seat selection: You can reserve a seat for free on the LNER website wherever you buy your ticket (or even if you don't have one). That's quite useful when travelling on a rover or InterRail ticket, as I was. You can also modify or cancel it later, which most other train companies don't allow.

G has done that . I've not done it Northbound to Inverness, only southbound from. I've tried many times and tickets were either unavailable for the dates I needed but my time on it Southbound means it's not exactly unusual for tickets to be sold out (when I used it last month from Inverness, it was announced as sold out which I suspect is partially due to seated Deerstalker passengers using those seats from Edinburgh).

@@GabrielsReviews Yes. We get a choice. A double berth with double bed (no ensuite) or a accessable twin bunks (no ensuite). Both are large as they accomadate more then one wheelchair. I stayed in the double bed last year with my partner and we wasn't impressed with bed as the mattress was really thin. We pay same price as a classic room (£100 to £200) no matter the berth. There's a disabled toilet next to berth. I found the ordeted food to berth was amazing. Just very expensive. The cooked breakfast was poor though.

I did that journey in 1982. HST Class 43 Intercity 125. Had a second class ticket but was aloud to dinner in the first class diner. I liked Inverness. It related to my home town in Sweden.

Brilliant video G, shame things went very wrong that day and I hope the hotel situation got resolved. LNER Azumas are nice trains I'll admit (I've not done first class on them though lol), I do want to go from York to London Kings cross (or the other way round even) non stop someday. Newcastle is a nice place, I did go once in 2022. :)

One cool little tip about travelling First Class from King's Cross is that there's a "secret" gate line just outside the lounge that takes you straight to the platforms via a bridge and escalators. So far out of all the first class services I've tried, LNER's feels like the best.

Such a shame, but it seems that every time I go on a train I get Delay Repay for one thing or another, If you booked your Inverness hotel at the best rate, it was probably non refundable I guess.Better luck next time.

I have been on LNER to Edinburgh Waverley couple years ago for a funeral and apparently there was major disruption on the ECML due to signalling problems near Newark Northgate. But I do like LNER and I have been to York, Leeds, Edinburgh Waverley and Doncaster and hopefully go to Newcastle in the summer.

If I'd known you didn't make it to Inverness I could of rang a family member to shacked you up for the night 😅. Good news for future reference there are two Travelodges only a few hundred yards from Central Station, Quayside and Central.
