The point Mr Pritam Singh was making is if all the CDCs do is all these coordination work, networking, program initiatives, is this a duplicate of work done also by charities, of other institutions? Granted there are areas which may not be covered by these existing frameworks and scopes of those non-CDC institutions, but does the mayor/CDC framework today warrant such a salary scale? Notice MP/mayor Denise Phua made the mention that she is but the only full time mayor and the rest are part time and/or double batting/triple hatting. Instead of wearing many hats, why not assess and see whether these already existent non CDC institutions can take up these work? Mr Pritam Singh is expressing the need for financial prudence due to our huge budget spending on this pandemic. Looking at spending at all angles - from efficacy of the various programs, the hardware and software needed to run these programs, to even the salaries of those who head these programs, all should be done. New York city 1.09 times the size of Singapore with pop 8.7M. One mayor pay S$350K. Singapore pop 5.4M need 5 mayors pay $3M and only 1 fulltime. When Michael Bloomberg was mayor for 2 terms, he served pro bono without taking a single cent (he is billionaire but its the voluntary service) . What she's detailing here, aren't what a MP , PA, govt agencies and grassriots could have done ?

After such a long speech from Denise Phua, all I can understand is Mayor there as coordinator. So, is there such a need when we can just elect 1 MP from each district as head of district but it doesn't warren such a high pay per annual, half a million just as coordinator is just dumb. If they are paid so well, Mayor better be efficient to help the community as they say but I still see Singaporean struggle to look for help when they are in trouble.

There are many relevant NGOs, and kind, charitable and educated people around to highlight and support the community they live in. Most residents, merchants and shop owners are self reliance, and they continued to have the support from the MPs, community clubs and their committees, and also from fair minded residents. Singapore is so small, do we still actually need high salaried mayors to add to the support where their high salaries can be put to better use or use to reinvest to increase our National Reserve. I would say that mayors in Singapore are redundant, and as one of the reader had commented that he/ she did not even know there is a mayor in his/her area or a mayor is there to have made an impact that he/she had known of, thus he/she concluded that we did not even need a mayor at all. So why have mayors' salaries incurred in our budget when people in Singapore do not need mayors. We are already happy with whatever that is within the arm of PA to improve our life and provide the supports and necessary assistance to live our life in our community.

CDC Mayors also have oversight of all their constituencies. WP's Aljunied and Sengkang are uncomfortable under the scrutiny. They cannot reward their supporters and cronies openly.

Mayors office was created by the government, and no one elected denise phua as a mayor. it is a useless role and does not deserve that ridiculous pay. simple logic. One admin coordinator not bad enough, you need 5 of them, each earning more than an elected MP? i know you damn salty that wp kicked out your precious ministers lah, but they got elected in and fought hard for their position.
