LO Pritam Singh - Budget Debate opening speech - 26th Feb 2024

𝐁𝐮𝐝𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒 𝐃𝐞𝐛𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬
In his Budget Debate speech, Leader of the Opposition Pritam Singh emphasized the need for the People's Action Party (PAP) to embrace openness and accommodate the diverse perspectives of Singaporeans as part of the Forward Singapore initiative.
Pritam noted that despite initial resistance by the People’s Action Party, many of Workers’ Party’s earnest policy contributions have been adopted by the government in some shape or form. These included recent examples such as the temporary financial support scheme for retrenched workers and anti-discrimination legislation.
He further argued for a fair, inclusive, and united Singapore that values transparency and civic participation, warning against the risks of political cynicism undermining the Forward Singapore vision.
A balanced and contested Parliamentary system with a strong opposition presence, is essential for creating a fair and inclusive society. This, he argued, would lead to a more confident, authentic Singapore, showcasing the vital role of opposition in the nation's democratic process and its contribution to societal betterment.
