Holy crap..........Will I still have a job when I report for work tomorrow morning ? 😨😑😮 YIKES !!! 😱 Thank You for the video. I had no idea as to how much skill was needed to do this job. I was sure WRONG when I had thought, that all you had to do was hook and lift,......and there you had it.........EASY MONEY! BE WELL BOSS! Don't let the winches hit you in the head. Hey Ron, tell that driver that it happens sometimes. At a job I was working a few years ago, a driver with 30 years experienced hooked one of our step decks in front of me (a CDL rookie) and another CDL with about 4 years experience. All three of us saw the click, saw the handle go in, watched him do his pull test, and everything. He hits a dirt hill at the end of the driveway with a nasty right turn, and bam, the step deck comes right off his tractor. We have no idea why.

Great recovery Ron. That guys hands were tied & he needed a lift. You got the lift charge + a little maintenance work on the job that keeps your shop busy. Everybody says it's never happened to them, huh. I dropped a few trailers in my time, but was lucky enough to have the landing gear working, & was able to recover myself. Each time it happened I swore I was hooked up. The 5th wheel is a complex item & has a lot more to it than a locking arm. It has a lot of moving parts that are internal & can not be seen to the eye. Folks need to keep that in mind.

That is one awesome tow vehicle. I assume there is a coffee maker in one of those boxes LOL. One of the benefits of being an owner-operator among the many, is working on your own rig but not for saving money, rather for the purpose of learning and knowing how things work and the ability to make self roadside repairs if the need arises. One of those repairs two years ago was rebuild of 5th wheel assembly to include mounting bushings, springs, and lock-jaws. I know the sound and the feel of a properly locking 5th wheel but I still take a peek underneath to verify. Working on ones own equipment these days is unheard of and most drivers of this generation don't even know how to raise the hood to perform the simplest of checks. I made a note to myself earlier today that it seems most people ie; car drivers and truck drivers alike wait until they are broke down on side of road before performing or having any maintenance done whatsoever. When I learned to drive trucks more than 3 decades ago, we were required to learn to repair own trucks (company) including all services or else you didn't work. This meant brake jobs, clutch adjust, tire repair or replace, lights, electrical, you know the drill. Everything I learned back then serves me today as an owner-operator. I know every square inch of my truck including sounds and what things feel like good or bad. I'm good at what I do because of those who taught me.

Years ago I had a heck of a time hooking up to a trailer. I could hear the fifth wheel lock, give it a tug and it would not lock. I did it about 4 times, was frustrated and thought the latch was broken. Then I took a breather and settled down, took a better look at the fifth wheel and found the latch handle was catching on the frame, on one of the bolt heads. A quick adjustment to the handle and it was fixed.

I been out here a little over 50 years now and always make a visual check to make sure those jaws are latched. Just looking at the pin puller and making a tug test only will get you in trouble. Why not take a little extra effort and be on the safe side. I'm sure Midwest Truck appreciates the business and I just bet Ron Pratt would tell those drivers the same thing.

Never used a rotator, they weren't around in my time, but sure would make a lot of jobs easier and safer. Another well done job.

That's why some truckers carry 4x4 & 2x4 wood blocks. Just lower your air bags then place blocks under trailor air your bags lower your legs and repeat.

I’ve been in situations like that many times before as a yard jockey, some my fault and other times helping another driver out. from what I can see in the video he should be able to take care of that himself. For starters crank the legs down as far as you can. The driver said it wasn’t that heavy so release the air in the tractor air bags and give it a hard reverse shot. And before I called a tow truck I’d throw a forklift driver $50. to get me out of that jam. He’s just getting the tow company Rich. 45 years of driving. 😎😎😎

Years ago (1966/1967) we had a driver drop a loaded trailer.Hard to get upset with the guy we were working 12/16 hours a day 7 days a week.He simply forgot to put the landing gear down, unlatched fifth wheel drove out from under.Trailer was loaded about 37/38 thousand pounds of diesel fuel.We had to pump out three compartments of the four on the trailer, then put landing gear in the low position lift the trailer up enough to get the tractor back under it.Sure could have used Ron that day.our 20 ton P&H would not lift it.

If your boom cables are on winch drums there doesn't seem to be enough weight on them with just those snatch blocks to keep the cable weaving tight on the drum , wound loose on the drum could damage the wire rope if you where to make a heavy pick?

Always do a good Pretrip inspection before taking off. And yes I ALWAYS look at the fifth wheel.

It is a tough business, but we didn't get to this level overnight. We've had to work long and hard to get where we are now. Hopefully we will continue to grow. Thanks and God bless.
