Since Niko participated in the Yugoslav war (1991-1995), it is easy to assume that he fell into these millstones while still a teenager, that is, between 13 and 17 years old. In the army, he served as an infantryman and helicopter pilot. It was the war that shaped Niko as a person and a person. Seeing numerous atrocities, murders and suffering, he became strong and cynical, an ideal fighter. The war went through him like a heavy roller, almost destroying any emotions, leaving room for depression and a feeling of slight regret. Niko's biggest tragedy in the war was when their group of fifteen, most of whom were his childhood friends, were ambushed. Аnd all but three lucky ones were killed. These people were Niko, Darko Brevic and Florian Kravic. “After you enter a village and you see fifty children, and they are all sitting in a neat row near the church wall, and everyone has their throats cut and their hands are cut off, you understand that the creature that did this has no soul” © Niko Bellic

Niko said he was betrayed 10 years ago and GTA IV took place in 2008. It seems he was in the Kosovo War making him 20 years old during the war. We do know that Roman did come to LC in 1998 to escape from war

@@tahamohammad1741 not to mention that WW2 started nearly 90 years ago. There's barely anyone directly affected by it alive today so they can't cry foul at the depiction of combat. Yugo wars on the other hand affected many people and almost anyone from the areas of the most severe combat (Slavonia in Croatia, pretty much entire Bosnia & Herzegovina and Kosovo) has lost someone relatively recently and veterans who fought in the wars still exist as well. Maybe they'll start making games about yugoslav wars in another 20-30 years or so.

It was not in the Yugoslav wars Niko fought in, it was in Kosovo. Think about it, Niko was born in 1978, if he fought in Croatia or Bosnia, then he must have been 14 in 1992. In 1998, he was 20. For ten years he has been searching for the traitor. Gta 4 takes places in 2008. Niko has a dislike for the albanians, Roman says in the mission “it’s your call” “Do not hurt the albanians, i know what you’re like Niko”

I was thinking about what ending should I choose. Sparing Darko would made sense if it was the last mission but Niko's solution to problems was violence for the rest of the game. The war made him the way he is and there's no coming back.

Near the end, when he goes to Roman's wedding with Kate (revenge ending...), he mentions having "dealt with a lot of problems recently" referring to all the people he killed off so that he could actually start a new life. His way of dealing with his "demons" was to simply put them out of the equation.

@@loadgamepl It wasn't that simple. The game had a more nuanced message than that. In cases of self defense then killing is justified. In cases of pure revenge or when it is unnecessary? Part of Niko's character arch is learning that sometimes violence IS the answer but not all the time. He needs to be a scalpel not a hammer. That's part of the reason you aren't supposed to take the deal ending. In that case you're once again doing criminal activity (moving drugs) and that has burned you every time in the game you try to get involved and with an untrustworthy sociopath at that. The reason to kill Dimitri is that he's a clear and present threat in the same way Vlad was and Faustian proved to be when Niko didn't keep destroying the Russian Mob at the beginning of the game. Also given that Niko is still alive by 2013 and has "gone dark" per Lester canonically he probably didn't shoot Darko. In any case good video bro.

Agreed, I liked the idea in the beginning when Niko is sleeping and gets flashbacks of the war. It would've been cool if a random cutscene like this occasionally triggered when we chose to sleep and we'd briefly see Niko's time in the war, perhaps even a brief playable section before it switches back to the real game.

Niko Bellic is and always will be my most favorite and beloved characters in the GTA Series, along side with GTA IV being the most heart felt and deep story driven games there was in the series. Don't get me wrong the other GTA games had their charms but GTA IV to me will always hold a special place in my heart for years to come and this video honestly gives me goosebumps from how good it is with how dark and depressing Niko's life can truly be, but yet so relatable in the pain and suffering he also goes through with both family, friend, and life problems mixed with PTSD of the war, but despite it he is strong to push through it and still carrys on when his past still comes back to haunt him which only makes him more badass as his story progresses throughout the game and having the one quote that still hits me when finishing the game on a good ending. "So this is what the dream feels like. This is the victory we longed for."

It amazes me how the GTA franchise has always made their crime based games be whacky an out there at times of course with realistic serious moments involved. But GTA IV was the one GTA that had a Red Dead levelled story, with its serious an dramatic tones an vibes. An with a character like Nicko Bellic who honestly has one of the saddest back stories of any protagonist in the gta universe. I was amazed rockstar was able to make a mostly truly serious GTA that became legendary to this day.

The problem is that there's simply not enough ported characters and the GTA V gameplay anims will never get near GTA IV motion capture. I did experiment with Luis Lopez and footage from GTA IV but I'm still not sure if that's a good choice. I do think about making smaller parts focusing on one topic (something like I did with San Andreas). For example missions focusing on Niko's search on that special someone (ULP missions) and so on

It is rather funny because the LC warehouse that was ported to GTA V where this mission took place had major texture and lighting issues so this scene takes place outdoors. I spawned two concrete fences and rotated them to create an illusion of being inside a warehouse

This was spectacular. However, in some scenes, this color correction from the original is simply not enough. Not a lot of people like it, but it still set its own atmosphere of Liberty City and Niko's story

R* never stated which squad ambushed Niko so I decided that this was a conflict between Serbian squads. Darko did say that Niko's squad killed his neighbours so it seems people of the same nationality did kill each other. I also didn't want to incorrectly involve other nationalities if not necessary. We have no idea in which war Niko was in (though we can conclude it was Kosovo War due to Niko's age). We only know for certain that Niko was born in Yugoslavia and speaks Serbian
