Loading PS2 Games from a Network SMB Server with Windows 10 and OPL

In this tutorial I show how to setup a SMB file server for use with the open PS2 loader. This allows the ps2 to load games from a computer that is attached to the local network. This is much faster than playing games stored on a USB Flash drive plugged into the PS2.

Good tutorial! If you don't want to move files into the public folder on the C drive, you can just right click the folder where you have them stored and under the "security" tab click "edit" and add "ps2" to the list of users who can access the folder. Make sure to tick all of the "allow" boxes and you are golden. Everything else in the tutorial still applies and your games can stay where they are (in my case a 2TB HDD instead of my smaller C drive SSD) . Hope this helps someone!

If you don't want to make an account on your pc called ps2, you can just untick the setting in windows requiring an account on this pc to access the shared folder. This tutorial helped me realize that was the holdup. Thank you!

This is a perfectly concise video, I simply love it. My laptop is connected to the router via Wifi and PS2 is wired to the same router, with this setup cutscenes lag much less (before they were basically unwatchable), and loading times are a quarter of what they used to be as well. Thank you so much, dude. I guess the ideal setup would be also games being transferred via ethernet or the USB port of the modem itself? But honestly mine is the most convenient one for me so I don't even mind.

I wouldn't enable SMB 1.0 on a network connected machine because of the security exploit, some of the oldest ransomware uses SMB 1.0 to spread to shares and computers. This is why is disabled by default on Windows 10, MS even disabled it through a one off patch to Windows 7 after the Wannacry attack. The ideal situation would be to use a single board computer like a raspberry pi 3 and a cheap external harddrive so you can keep it off the network. Unfortunately single board computers are 3-4x the normal price at the moment for some reason. You can buy a 10 watt Celeron N5015 system off Ali with 4 nics, run proxmox and install windows 10 as a vm, follow this tutorial and keep it off the network for less money.

SMB 1.0 is VERY exploitable. Do NOT enable this on your normal network. if you know how to, setup a seperate (v)lan and put all your retro stuff in here and block any outgoing traffic.

The results are faster and better than playing with a flash drive, but not as fast as using a good old CD. Btw, will this method work using a different hard drive?

I'm glad you like my tutorial. This method should work with a different hard drive as long as it isn't encrypted. I would place the PS2 folder with the DVD subfolder and isos into the root of the second hard drive. Hit properties, add access to the ps2 account. As long as all the other settings are configured that should work.

Games still run and save natively. Instead of loading from the ps2 dvd drive, games are loaded through the network port. Open ps2 loader is the code that makes it possible

make sure your router isn't blocking the smb protocol. if you are using a cable to directly connect a ps2 and pc, you need to set static IP addresses on both. good luck

@@eddie0Fll yea, I'm guessing your router is blocking the connection. I suggest trying to directly connect the two. The hard part with this is setting the static ip addresses manually. Here's a guide on how to do that as it's not covered in my video: www.ps2-home.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3692 It says that you need a "crossover" cable but from my experience a regular Ethernet cable works fine

Yeah it should work over wifi depending on the router. As for folder location I recommend keeping it in the public user folder as there are less hoops to jump through to get the windows permissions to allow it. I think it works fine as long as you are not using your C: drive but I have not tried this myself.

To play games with LAN or online support, you need to either use a disc or load games via the slower USB method. If you have a fat model, loading games from HDD should work but I have not tested it.

Its says it could not open the SMB Sharing. Just to let you all know if you are connecting them directly with a cable, you need to set up static IPs both for PS2 and PC. Also, do you really need that SMB 1.0 bit?

If you do not want to enable SMB1.0, I suggest trying out UDPBD. OPL does not support any SMB version newer than 1.0.

Using a router is the easiest as it will set the IP addresses automatically. If using a single cable (direct connection) then the IP addresses must be set manually.

Perhaps i am a fool, this is my issue. I have a computer which is not connected to the internet but attached to my slim through an Ethernet cable, the computer recognizes it as a public network but doesn't know what it is and does not give me a ipv4 and OPL says cannot connect to DHCP

Some games do require certain modes to be enabled, for example Ratchet and Clank needs modes 3 + 6. This can be configured within the opl game list. Using opl manager you can download cover art but this is completely optional.

Yes this works. Direct attach does require you to set a static IP address on both the pc and ps2. Something like this: PC - 192.168.0.15 Subnet mask - 255.255.255.0 Default gateway - 192.168.0.1 PS2 - 192.168.0.20 Subnet mask - 255.255.255.0 Default gateway - 192.168.0.1

Followed everything to the T and upon saving changes in OPL Settings I was greeted with an error reading "Network Drive not found" or something like that. I disconnected everything and went back to ensure the network adapter was firmly secured to the PS2, and upon opening OPL again, I was greeted with Error 304. Does this have anythign to do with my OPL version? My FMCB card came with v1922. Any assistance is appreciated.

My guess is that your local network/router is blocking the network share. Firstly I would try to connect to the smb share using the "crossover" method. You need to set a static ip for both your computer and ps2 in opl settings (disable dhcp). I don't know if it would have any affect but I would recommend updating your freemcboot memory card to v1.966. Version 1.92 was released way back in 2013

Is there any sort of information I should keep in my back pocket re: optimizing games? Scouring the forums I hear adjusting Modes 1 & 3 are the first step when moving past things. Seeming to get slow loads on in-game cutscenes. Any tips for optimizing further? Feel free to slap a link down if you don’t want to type it out

Do you need a crossover cable or just a normal ethernet cable?
