Loading-Up The HUGE Kenworth Road Locomotive At The End of Truckin' For Kids 2013

This truck is used to haul very heavy loads...kind of like a locomotive for road use. At the end of Truckin' For Kids 2013, the guys of American Heavy Moving & Rigging are seen loading their huge Kenworth prime mover onto a Murray detachable goose-neck lowboy for their trip back to Chino, California. I know nothing about the big KW, except to my ear, it sounds like it's powered by a Caterpillar. Shot on Sunday October 6th, 2013.

For the people that think it's unsafe, the circumstances involved for those brackets to come off and the trailer separating, mean a far greater amount of destruction are already happening. Like a jacknife or rollover. A pothole isn't going to just bounce it apart.

First time I saw a detachable goose trailer I couldn't believe how simple and slick it worked. Way easier and safer than any ramp over the rear trailer tires. I agree that at first it doesn't look strong enough but it works and I've not heard of any failures in my western province of Canada.

Grey Nomad - a similar system is quite common in Australia especially among the upper echelon of the lowloader heavy haulage community. Here the primemover (tractor) is uncoupled and the Gooseneck is hydraulically folded out flat (known as a folding gooseneck trailer) to form an easily negotiable and very low trailer. This is very expensive equipment compared to rear ramps but it does have the advantages shown in this video.

Just wanted to say thank you for sharing this I’m familiar with gooseneck trailers and trombones. I found it interesting to see a different way to do the hook up of the “neck” to the trailer compared to the ones I’ve seen here in 🇬🇧 Something that I haven’t seen at all before this video is a sliding Fifth Wheel which I found cool to see!! So thank you once again!!
@espeescotty

You are so very welcome! I'm happy I was able to bring something new to you. Many people from other parts of the world leave comments saying how this entire setup is so antiquated and basically stupid compared to the systems that they use. All I can say is that this system is as light weight as can be yet strong, as inexpensive as they come to build, purchase, and maintain, and just utterly reliable. The most advanced thing is that pneumatic pin system on the sliding fifth-wheel and the airbag suspension on the truck to lift and lower everything. I was thrilled to be able to get all of the steps from such a good perspective and to be able to share them in this video. Thank you for your comment.

@@espeescotty I don’t know about you but I’m 54 years old and old school I started on Colchester lathes all manual no cnc involved all the milling and grinding machines were too. With a boss who I now count as a WW2 hero Polish Fighter squadron based in 🇬🇧 Sometimes old school is better than modern in the right circumstances but not always. That truck of yours is just brilliant I presume that the tyres on it are military spec’s and I bet it will beat some of the modern stuff. I know of an old military recovery vehicle that was being used by a friend of a friend, it was 8x8 AWD and it was the only vehicle that managed to get a truck out of heavy mud. It had brake locks on top of standard brakes, axle locks and diff locks. Sometimes old school rocks 😀😀😀😀

Hi, @stebo59, you are absolutely correct, it is a CAT 3412 under that hood. If one looks at the other video of this very Kenworth, that video takes a motion view of the underside of the tractor; as the engine oil pan comes into view, it is of the CAT 3412 engine. The CAT 3412 engine installed is a 1,000 hp double turbocharged engine. The axles are Clark planetary axles, a giveaway is as if one looks at some of the earlier Clark (formerly Michigan) front end loaders the same axle cover design is used. The only thing interesting is the ladder frame/chassis, I don't think a double rail design is used, which the KW oil-field tractors currently use. It could be an "I" beam cross-section perhaps, like what was used on many Mack Off-Highway tractors, decades ago, like the Mack model M and LRVSW series tractors, some of which used Cummins VT1710 engines, and Mack own "Plani-Drive" planetary rear axles. The Facebook site for American Heavy Moving & Rigging, Chino, CA has info on this Kenworth and my info on this Kenworth is courtesy of that Facebook site.

@amirlach
@amirlach 9 жыл бұрын
AAAyyyGGG Removable Neck is the proper term. Most now have what are called "Sissor Necks", or laydown necks. You pull the locking pins and lower the neck with the winch as you drive forwards. It makes for a full width ramp, easy to load over and quick to laydown and pick up.www.ingeniumengineering.com/Images/trailer06.gif
@amirlach
@amirlach 9 жыл бұрын
I have seen those as well. These work well in warm climates, however during a Canadian winter when your truck and trailer are packed with ice and snow, digging out and trying to start a small engine has proven to be problematic. As most of the oilfield and equipment haulers are equipped with winches, a good operator can unpin and lay a neck down very quickly. This has just become the standard practice here.

+amirlach Scissor necks are actually not that common because they are to heavy.
@amirlach
@amirlach 8 жыл бұрын
+Adriaan Verburg Come to Alberta, sissor necks rule the day. In the past they were heavy, but tthe newer designs are alot stronger and lighter. Most of the new 40 wheelers have sissor necks because they are as light and as strong as the removables. They are much faster to lay down and you do not need the aluminum ramps as seen in the video. The ramps for our 40 wheeler are 6 feet long and require two men to handle. The owner of the company assures us a new 11 wide one is in the budget. We simply cannot haul the newer bigger and longer service rigs anymore. Nor compete price wise with the faster sissor necks.

They have a clip system. Almost the same like on the back of a truck to connect a trailer with it. You let both parts touch another an it directly connects to one.

I use a Cozad which is similar in design and when its 100+° and moving a bunch of pieces in a day, often I'd prefer the hydraulic RGN. These you also have to be more careful when leaving the pavement because there is no neck height movement so it can be easy to bind up the neck into the frame or bottom our. Still neat and you can drive up the rear of the trailer too.
