I love that, by playing just 3 games, they completely by chance got 2 that are actually the same game. I also think it's interesting how Age of Apes seems to have, like... some degree of actual artistry put into it. It had real voice actors, it had real aesthetic direction, it had real character design. But all in service to mediocre-at-best gameplay that's tutorial all the way through. It's weird to think about what that must be like for the people who worked on it.

I was eating breakfast when I watched this. When the first video started and the ape was executed, I inhaled my eggs and started choking because I was so shocked. I thought I was going to have to go to the hospital for a few seconds, but thankfully, I coughed it up, but that was painful.

There's just something soul crushing about mobile games. There's an old joke where I'm from about being careful when buying Christmas tree ornaments because they could be fake - they look the same as the real one but have no joy in them. Never understood that one as a kid, just enjoyed the funny absurdism of it, but as I got older I think I'm starting to get it. Like, they're shiny and the ads are made to look appealing and then you open it up and it barely even tries to pretend that it's not a money-draining skinner box. And then you think about the people who it's aimed at (children and other vulnerable people) and it just leaves a bad taste in one's mouth. It feels a bit like seeing broken discarded toys.

Always love Watch+Play. I have one observation about mobile game episodes: there is no sub-ocean. So, we don't get the full experience when it's mobile games. Alex is good at exploiting broken mechanics to hilarious effect, but there kind of ARE no mechanics in these. I'm sure there will be PC games in Watch+Play again

When trying to figure out the amount of content a mobile game has, I think it might be useful to think from the perspective that they start much smaller, and then each month add a new chapter, character, resource to gather/purchacse, daily minigame to do, etc., just to keep players checking back in. So when you look at it a year or two later, it is an overwhelming canyon of stuff.

Age of Apes just instantly turns into a *dramatically* worse version of an entire subgenre of disappointing flash games from the early 2010s. I always said mobile games were just worse versions of flash games (at their best), but I thought they had taken on their own horrible identity by now. I miss flash games.
