Loads of wild trout while Euronymph Flyfishing the River Calder in Yorkshire

I found lots of hungry trout on this urban river in Yorkshire. I was surprised by the amount of fish here - although there were a lot of very small ones, I did manage a few nicer fish as the day progressed. I have heard this river does hold quite a few large trout.
If you don't mind a more urban setting, I think this river is hard to beat for the price of a day ticket which is £5 from the Ryburn and Halifax Angling Society.

Excellent video man. This is the stretch i fish. The fishing is such good value, and there are certainly some nice fish to be found. That looked like a pretty decent grayling you had at the end there.

Thanks, Tom! It's a really good stretch - I like the warer closer to Copley too and still need to explore more of it. The grayling at the end was the best fish I landed along with a brownie I had below the weir after my GoPro ran out of battery. Have you been out at all this winter? I was wondering if it's worth heading over that way around Christmas while I'm back in the north.

@@AAAFlyFisher I've not managed to get out since October. The grayling fishing will remain good i'm sure. Sometimes finding them can get trickier as they shoal up in the colder water. Find them though and you're sorted. The problem in winter is timing your visit with good water conditions. The river quickly rises after rain.

Hi there and thanks for the kind words! I use a microleader setup with my 10ft 3wt rod. The leader is about 20 feet of .18mm (4x) color line from Pezon and Michel. Then I attach about 6 feet of .16mm (5x) bicolor line from Pezon and Michel to act as my sighter. Attached to the sighter is my tippet which is usually 3 to 5 feet of 6x or 7x fluoro. Sometimes I just have one beaded nymph on or other times I'll have a second nymph on as a dropper. Hope this helps - you get very good drifts and strike detection with the microleader. It's great once you get used to casting it. All the best Patrick
