Steam Deck OLED Australian Review: Was It Worth The Wait?

Picked up my 64gb LCD at the start of the year as a gift to myself and chucked in a 1tb SSD. Been a rough year and this thing has gotten me through it, so I'm glad I didn't wait.

I got a 64GB LCD off a buddy from USA when he upgraded to an oled. Wasnt going to but he made me an offer I couldnt refuse. I went for a 2TB SSD and 1GB micro SD card 😁😇

I got a buddy in the USA who offered me his 64GB LCD model when he upgraded to an oled model early this year. I wasnt going to but he sold it to me for a price (with post) I couldnt refuse. I ended putting a 2TB SSD in it and a 1TB micro sd card (you can never have enough storage right 😁). I think even the LCD one is great and it also makes a fantastic emulation machine which is actually my primary reason for getting it. (Batocera)

Do you have a screen protector on yours. I keep hearing the 1TB etched screen doesnt need a protector, youre only ruining your quality by doing so. Literally everyone when i search it is saying its not designed to have and is best experienced without one. Cause screen protectors either make glossy (ruining the etched effect) or make it look desaturated. Plus not gonna be out of the case when not using, so not in pockets with keys and all those micro sands. But man, im still kinda worried. I got a Switch with a cracked protector screen (iunno how, i dont think i dropped it, maybe it was at bottom of bag in cheap case when i put down my bag?). So iunno. But i hear Switch screen is a lot worse and if you drop the Deck its going to break regardless of protector because its heavy. I feel better safe than sorry, but i did just pay $200 more for an effect i wont get with a protector, plus i dont really wanna get fadded colours or extreme shineynees. I feel like regardless of what i do im shooting myself in the foot for my experience. Would love your opinion on this!

Because it's a review model (and as noted in the intro, I do not know if it's going back or not), I've not put a screen protector on it to speak of. However, were it mine, I'd seriously consider doing so as an investment in protecting the Steam Deck. Check any of my phone reviews and you'll inevitably hear me talking about phone cases and how everyone should use them (and they should!) and this fits in the same category. Screen damage SUCKS, especially on a device like this, and while few people are likely to take it with sandpaper (except maybe for the YT viral hits, sigh...) accidents and wear and tear do happen. Be interested to hear other people's opinion on this myself too.

@@AlexKidman Ive looked into forums and reddits. Basically everyone says for the etched glass one, its best not to have one. But 1 in maybe 30 say they do regardless even with the flaws, but also say the protector isnt even scratched. Ive only seen 1 guy ever say they need to replace a screen protector, but never specified why. But if we talking the non-etched glass versions, yeah might aswell since it doesnt effect the screen at all if you do. "Its not a phone going into your pocket, it should be put back in the case" is a common sentiment amongst most.

It's definitely my style -- I do try to dial it down, but then I get complaints that the videos run too long, so it's maybe one of those "can't please everyone" situations. But duly noted, I will try to slow it down somewhat (though there are typically speed controls on most YT clients if that helps too).
