I think the star of the show is the fact that it has HDR at all. HDR has been the bane of Linux's existence for some time now, and the fact that Valve got this working as flawlessly as they have is a testament to the serious work they and the community have put into the Linux gaming ecosystem! As for the battery life improvement, they were actually pretty spot on when they said a 50% improvement. It's a combination of many things, not the least of which being the move to 6 nanometer. The whole unit is more efficient and LTT even tested it, and they got about a 45% Improvement over the old one. So Valve's claim is accurate.

13:10 it's an important distinction that the Steam Deck "anti-glare" is not a coating but is etched glass. It looks dramatically better than anti glare coatings (like many monitros have) which will diffuse fine lines and text. I've had the 512 for over a year and love the etched glass too.

One thing to consider is that Valve is still selling the older LCD models with a big discount for a limited time. You can get the 64GB model for $350, which is still a good deal, or a refurbished one for $280, whici is absolutely crazy for what you get (if you can get one, of course). Just add a 512GB SSD, a 512GB SD card and you can get a 1TB-ish Steam Deck for around $350, it's still an extremely good deal, even if you just want to use emulators on it.

The extremely wide battery life range makes a lot of sense, as that is the difference between playing a demanding recent AAA game and a not so demaning indie game. And 2 to 3, 8 to 12 hours are both a 50% improvement. PC Gamer tested it in their review and their findings agreed with Valve's battery life improvement: the battery life of the LCD one compared to the OLED one (with HDR off), running Diablo 4 went from 1.5 hours to 2.5 hours, and running Vampire Survivors that went from 5 hours to 8 hours and 20 minutes. That's a 67% and 60% improvement, respectively, so that checks out for these games! With HDR off for VS, by the way, with it on the OLED only lasted about 6 hours, but it didn't impact battery life for Diablo 4 (HDR on did negatively impact battery life in other AAA games)

One thing I like about the etched glass versus the glossy finish as well is that whenever I’m playing with a device that has a glossy finish I can sometimes catch a very detailed version of my face looking back at me, and with the etched glass it’s more like I’m looking at an outline of a person, not saying I’m afraid of my own reflection, but sometimes seeing a face reflected back at you can be startling when you’re just trying to focus on playing games.

When looking at a phone, unless we know the camera is about to load up we’re usually just back arched, chin against chest, all muscles in the face relaxed and eyes wide open, Phone usually beneath us pointing upwards, worst lighting possible, non-groomed, and potentially no make up if you’re a lady. lol I’d say the only mirrors that actually catch us by surprised are the ones you see in like dingy bathrooms at gas stations in the middle of the night that use those fluorescent bright bulbs that just reveal all of your faults and blemishes. The RE Remake games don't have great implementation of HDR IIRC, which may be part of the reason the difference isn't very apparent. Also the HDR calibration menu in many games are not very accurate, so while the calibration settings look good on the example image in the menu, once in game it can end up looking very flat or washed out. Very common for the peak brightness setting to not match up with what gets displayed at all for instance. When a game does HDR well it's absolutely amazing. When it's implemented poorly it can often look better to just disable it.

I don't know how people watched Dave2d's video and didn't look at the conditions or angles he was shooting with, but confirmation bias really is a thing. Dude, i remember when it first came out and your review was pretty lukewarm about the Steam Deck. It's nice to see you've come around and appreciate the ease of use and consumer oriented attitude that Valve continues to bake into this thing. I have an LCD steam deck and I immediately decided that the upgrade would be worth it. I didn't like the slippery texture on the original deck and bought caps immediately. I sent my deck in to be repaired after my son dropped it and the left bumper stopped working and now after the repair it doesn't feel the same, so hearing that they feel more clicky and responsive from you and other users is a big plus for me. The improvements to the polling rate of the screen and trackpads will make input easier, where I felt this was definitely somewhere Valve compromised on the original Deck. And the slightly larger screen, which fills out the bezel's more nicely, where the LCD model, i felt, had too much bezel, is also important to me. LET ALONE, that it is now OLED w/ 90 hrz. It's a matter of saving the money to buy it for me.

I like the device but buying makes no sense for me for many reasons. First Valve basically only serves the US and few others so for most of us in the world is buying threw ebay which adds a scalper premium on the price. Second I have very few games on Steam itself. Most of my games are on GOG because I love getting DRM free games and support DRM free. Sure with games like on GOG that you can do as want with without needing the GOG launcher etc it means you can find workarounds to make them play on Steam Deck but I don't know if I want to go threw the hassle. One of the other Windows handhelds probably makes more sense for my case. Third. I already own a Switch with plenty of games so is not like I don't have a device when I need some handheld gaming.

Whatever suits you best. Someone will get your LCD one and hopefully will be happy, you will get the new OLED one and you already know what to expect. For me I was looking for a laptop but the ones I like (high TGP) started from 2.5k EUR, so I decided to buy Steam Deck OLED 512GB plus dock. Sure there will be additional costs mouse+keyboard and micro sd card. Steam Deck can work as Linux PC (low power one), but doing basic things should not be a problem. And maybe finally I will have more motivation to play some older and newer games from the backlog.

I have been planning on getting my wife a Steam Deck for Christmas since early this year. I was waiting to see if they'd offer a deal for Black Friday. And I guess they sort of did, since they have lowered the price of the old model until they're sold. However it's tough to resist the OLED model so I did get my order in today. Hopefully it ships before Christmas. The checkout process was tough to get through so I may have to wait a bit.

My Ambernic RG350M just died, and after a new battery didn't fix it I said screw it and pulled the trigger on the 1TB OLED. I thought the concept was cool since the first launch, but this refresh is icing on the cake. I just got it 2 days ago, and so far it's great. I love the fact that it is built to be repaired/upgraded/tinkered with, and the software is so open too! I try to support products with those goals in mind.

What that could've made the lineup more appealing all around: -256gb LCD Deck: $350 -512gb OLED Deck: $499 -1tb OLED Deck: $549 -2tb OLED Deck: $649 -Limited Edition 2tb OLED Deck: $679 The OLED by itself is a massive cost and value boost, but the storage is still pissing me off. It's not a special NVMe, and a 2tb NVMe costs $80-100 for something worth your while on Amazon or Newegg. The value and price would be there that I think most people with the money would opt for Valve to do it vs having to do it themselves. Not me, I'd get the 512gb and harvest the SSD to put into something else. 😂 But that's part of why I love your channel, because you appeal to the DIY nerd crowd. ✌😁 (Side-note, I really hope that they take the hint from the Limited Edition and all the atomic purple shell swaps to just make color variants for the future. Maybe something like the Dualsense Edge where you can just click a notch and replace the sticks too. Maybe make the face plate swappable without having to unscrew the back.)

18:02 you didn't mention once the most important aspect of the new deck OLED screen : it can show far richer colours. (Check the packaging materials : the new colours are central to the marketing). HDR isn't only about peak brightness and contrast... The deck LCD caps at some 70% sRGB space, while deck OLED goes "120%" ie beyond sRGB and into P3 space with some 96%. The deck LCD's colours were so muted the settings default to boosting the colours to reach sRGB. The deck OLED's colours on the other hand are saturated enough to support sRGB by default as a minimum and the slider can only go up from there. And while 90 Hz is a bigger number, it's a double edged sword, with frame times suffering if they don't match the refresh rate. Thankfully, the deck can adjust the refresh rate per-game, and the inherent advantage of OLED is faster pixel response time compared to the blurry LCD movement. Valve aren't advertising 90 Hz because it's just a side effect of the new screen, there's not much performance or battery to really go beyond 60 FPS in most games.

The reason matte or antiglare coatings suck imo, is that they spread out light of reflections to make it less sharp. so that blooming/spreading of the reflected light is also happening to the colours of the display on the other direction too, causing everything on screen to have a sort of hazy bloom albeit on a smaller scale but across the entire display. I think the only reason that this is being considered a "new" problem for oled (PC monitor/steamdeck) screens is that previously oleds were only on all glossy displays ie. phones, tablets and tvs so when they have a matte layer added it is noticably worse, these screens are not used in the same way to traditional PC monitors in an office environment where blurring the screen doesn't really matter as they are not used for the same sort of rich entertainment content. If you think about other products that "looks cool" but have glossy screens they are usually all the higher end looking ones, e.g. macbook screens, mac screens, large 4k TVs, all smartphones, tablets. I think that once you get the glossy edition it will become "clear" to you and hopefully to all the manufacturers too that glossy should always be an option and imo the default for gaming/entertainment displays no matter if it is oled, mini led, micro led, lcd, plasma, crt, dot matrix etc.

I absolutely hate anti glare coating and matte finishes on Oled screens. A huge selling point of the Oled G9 Monitor was the fact it was glossy, and it does look just so much better than other oled screens. I know for some people it doesn't matter, but the difference the anti-glare gives really is a issue for me and I would reject any device with it.

Lmao at the dog at 3:46 behind the coffee - im just picturing you holding em up back there squatting behind the table As someone who has thoroughly enjoyed my Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED the last 7 years I am VERY ready for a new Nintendo handheld. A part of me has been ready for a new Switch since it came out in 2017 and its limitations were evident fairly quickly. At the same time Nintendo knew something that didn’t make sense to me as a consumer at the time which I think has been a huge boon to them and the success of the Switch. It’s battery life and portability that made the Gameboy win the handheld war, to a lesser extent that could be argued for the DS and 3DS. Nintendo knows handhelds. That battery life is a big deal. I can only remember a small handful of times any of my Switches actually went into low battery mode before I could charge them and that was mostly during very long sessions with BotW and TotK. I am willing to wait an extra year for Nintendo to make their device that little bit more powerful and to find that sweet spot where they can get power and battery life balanced. I just don’t think the technology will be where they want it even by 2025 so it will be interesting to see what concessions they make. I think the idea of a special dock with extra tech to boost resolution (or something) would be interesting and its difficult to imagine Nintendo going back to just a home console with no handheld. The Switch brand is so strong I almost imagine the next Switch will be that long rumored Switch Pro we were all clamoring for non-stop several years ago. It’s gotta be a bigger jump than the 3DS to the New 3DS XL and they have to get far more oomph out of if with software. I’ve made enough of these word salads speculating in the meanwhile that Steam Deck OLED is looking MIGHTY tempting. Im not a PC/computer gamer but I do have a handful of games I love on Steam and KNOW there so many many more I would buy granted a device more powerful than my late 2013 MacBook Air to play them on. Not only the indies but all those big budget games that never could quite run on Switch or weren’t worth the port for whatever reason. The resident evil games being released as cloud versions on Switch was another nail in it’s coffin. RE Revelations was a showcase of how powerful the 3DS could be in the right hands and the same could be said for the Switch ports of RE1 and RE2 not to mention RE5, RE6 (gross), and Capcom’s fantastic work with Monster Hunter Rise. My standard for the next Switch is it has to run Resident Evil games natively and do it well. I may just bit the bullet and buy a Steam Deck OLED because even with a new Switch I am getting tired of Nintendo’s overly streamlined setup that doesn’t allow for much customization, optimization, organization, or freedom for how to play their games. Ok I just sat down to comment about that dog in the background and wrote a book. Goodbye/

No they aren't talking about the huge big changes besides the screen because they know what they said about "not making a new Steam Deck for years". This is literally a Steam Deck 2 and they are not calling it that. First time in 15 years I've seen Valve do some trickery with its costumers and it's just sad. You can't even trade in the old Steam Deck or better yet those who bought during the summer sale or the yearly Steam Deck sale or those who bought through the refurbished/gamestop program. All of those customers all had in mind that they can buy a Steam Deck and not worry about another for at least 2-3 years. Valve did there people dirty and I actually feel it too because I own a Steam Deck and was told there wasn't going to be one for awhile. It's the same story we all have

Lmao this clearly isn’t a “new” Steam Deck - or a “Steam Deck 2”, if you will - so they weren’t lying… this is literally just a “Pro”-version at best. Would you call the Nintendo Switch OLED version a “Switch 2”? Nah, don’t think so either. They’re both essentially comparable to PS4, when Sony made a PS4 Pro (or whatever it was called specifically) deep into the PS4-cycle. A “revision” of an earlier, same model, at most. This isn’t an entirely new device; a “sequel”. Lol “trickery with customers” my ass 🥴
