Lobengula Khumalo, born around 1845, held the significant position of the last recognized king of the Northern Ndebele, also known as Matabele in English. The Ndebele people were renowned for their military prowess and were often referred to as "the men of the long shields" in their native language. This epithet derived from their expert use of the Nguni shield during warfare. Lobengula's reign marked a crucial era in the history of the Northern Ndebele, as he faced numerous challenges from colonial powers, particularly the British South Africa Company. Despite his efforts to navigate this volatile landscape, Lobengula tragically passed away around 1894, bringing an end to the official monarchy of the Ndebele people.
