Can't wait for the next videos. I'd love a deep dive on filtration, different types, efficiency, diy cost, operational cost, capacities, turnover, maintenance upkeep, etc. Maybe something about moving most equipment to the filtration side to hide it for a display tank.

Haha, I'd love that too, but truth be told my ADD gets in the way of my intentions a lot on this channel. A lot of started series here are mostly done, but getting around to record the last 5 minutes, or edit, or fix sound, etc. just hits my brain in a bad way. I had like 10 videos on my camera when it was stolen because just bothering to transfer the footage seemed like an annoyance I didn't want to deal with. I've had that idea on the books for awhile, it's just... forcing myself to do it is difficult, and medicating the ADD makes me worse at my day job. Thanks for watching, and I'll keep the idea in mind moving forward, at least hopefully talking about why the thing I happen to be working on is good or bad for different scenarios.

Should hopefully be up soon, I lost one of the pieces a day after getting it, and I have no memory at all of what I was doing with it, I might have left it at the hardware store, I dunno, but as soon as the replacement gets in I'll have the next one up.

Hi, I got the 880 epoxy today and applied the first coat. I wore a mask but the smell is not bad, it just smells like a rust proof paint. It’s different from any other paint I have used, it does not spread well, I had to use a thicker coat than I am used to using but once I did this it was easy to use. I am happy with it so far. I will let you know how it performs after three coats. Thanks

Hi, just wanted to give you an update. I put 3 coats of the 880 on the sump as you suggested, sanding between coats. Then I siliconed the junction as you showed in your video. I used Momentive RTV 108 as you recommended. I must say that I am super impressed. The 880 epoxy is as hard as a rock now and the RTV 108 is way way better than any silicone I have ever used before. Thanks again for your help and recommendations

Welcome back! Looking forward to seeing how the new filter goes together plus, did I catch you right, heating the tank whilst cooling PC's?
@MischiefandFins
@MischiefandFins 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's going to be a bad design on the PC side, since it will involve mixed metals (not by choice, I just bought a bunch of old bitcoin cooling equipment at pennies on the dollar and it's already copper blocks and aluminum radiators) but since the PC cooling is flushed and will contain safe water, and the tank water will only ever contact the aluminum radiators, it should all be safer than my current solution of "aluminum coils full of toxic refrigerant sitting inside the tank" Was planning to have the sand filter video up but I managed to lose one of the bung adapters already and replacements take 10 days to get here. Ugh.

Hi, I found your videos a week ago and I love them, so much useful information, thanks so much for sharing your knowledge. I am currently building a large sump filter from ply, but can’t get the Epoxy you recommend, I live in Ireland and the US companies will not ship here. I found a supplier that is recommending Sigmashield 880 which is a Polyamine Epoxy. I would be very grateful for your opinion on this product. Thanks again
@MischiefandFins
@MischiefandFins 4 жыл бұрын
Biggest issue is going to be brittleness. Polyamines are very good for water resistance but are far more likely to crack if your sump flexes at all when filled, so be sure to over engineer it. I'm pretty sure they tend to be more dangerous to work with as well, so be sure to check the safety info. The stuff I use is generally harmless, but that isn't the case for all epoxy types.
@garethbaker3429
@garethbaker3429 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for that, it’s great relief to hear this as I have spent weeks trying to source a suitable epoxy here. No problem with making it so there is no flex. I am designing a very large concrete tank, about 20m3, I was going to get a professional company to fibre glass the tank, but if this works for the sump I might do it myself. Thanks again for all your help and advice

@@garethbaker3429 I can't find any pricing on the 880 in smaller quantities, but you might check the cost vs Amercoat 385 too. It's looks like it's made by the same company, so I'd expect to find it in the same sorts of shops.

They are selling it here in 4litre pots, well its probably a one gallon pot but they call it 4litre. You can also get it in 20 litre drum. They have not given me the price yet, but I am not too concerned about that, I just want the best product I can get, there is nothing worse than doing all the work and the materials letting you down. On a separate note, have you looked at Anoxic filtration? I have spent months researching it and changing my tank over to it. I have a 2000litre Discus tank that now has less than 5ppm Nitrate and I have not done a water change now for 3 weeks. PO4 at 0ppm also. I used to do 20% water change twice a week. The bacteria is very slow growing and it took two months to get it working this well. But I will never go back to fluid bed filters. Search Dr Kevin Novak in the US and Manky Sanky in the UK

I have read some things. And you know how the interwebs is. I'm not sure I should trust the anecdotal. I hear of people developing allergies to dubia colonies. They get a chemical reaction to the smell, supposedly. Anyone?
@MischiefandFins
@MischiefandFins 4 жыл бұрын
Cockroach allergies are apparently pretty common, though it's far more likely that people are getting exposed to dust containing bits of feces or shell than the "odor" causing issues. Looking at the college of asthma, allergies, and immunology info, I'd guess up to 4% of people might have issues with them?

Please don't tell me you're using the same container for your coffee. I am apparently really enjoying this video. By the way, I found it informative.

Yeah, but it does get washed between uses. Also, since they're bred by us they aren't covered in sewage bacteria and other nasty things like wild pest roaches, so it's a bit of a non-issue. I generally consider the bugs I raise to be "food safe" so I treat them the same as I treat any other raw meats (or, any jerky, by the time they're prepared).

@@MischiefandFins I guess I can understand that. I'm not great about cleaning my coffee grinder. It might happen once every two weeks, once every two bags of beans. Also, I have a chemist friend who does things like that. I don't care if I sterilize it in my pressure canner, it either belongs to the geckos, the fish, the dog, the cat, or the people. It's me who has the typical human problem of ignoring logic.

@@-8_8- I suspect it's easier for me because I have already eaten a variety of bugs on a variety of occasions, so it feels more like "I'm blending food that I'm not going to eat" than "I'm blending something gross" I'm way more likely to have dedicated equipment for dealing with off the shelf fish food, since that stuff gives me autoimmune issues if I ingest it cause of all the wheat.

@@MischiefandFins I gotta say, I want to learn more about the foods. A whole lot more. And I'd like to do more feedings with insects. But for me that might be wingless fruitflies. And I wish I could find things like black worms. I have pentazonas that may spawn from the flies. My largest fish are my yoyo loaches. So the crushing dried insects would work for me I think. As far as cleanliness, don't those roaches pretty much walk in their own poo? Is that why the egg crates wear out? I mean, definitely not sewage, but I wonder what lives in their excrement. Any idea?
