Finally someone who is like me! I want locs and currently researching parting patterns & size for my appointment this week. But it's not like I've always wanted dreads for years, but I always liked them on other people. And many of the protective styles I do with fake hair, resemble dreads.

There are so many reasons why I love your channel. Add this video to the list because one thing that is lacking in the loc community is transparency. Starting my loc journey, even after thorough research, was full of surprises. I truly envisioned the process to be as simple as my decision to big chop in 2011. A frank and honest perspective, such as what you have so perfectly articulated, would have been so helpful to me, but I saw only the popular loc'd KZbinrs displaying glorious crowns, without proper attention given to the level of patience and commitment required to get there. Sorry for the novel, but I really just wanted to thank you. I am 14 months loc'd now, and I am still learning so much daily. This video was awesome and necessary ✌🏾️

My beautician will not charge me for a style but to maintain my hair to always be healthy. Great Video

I know you said you mostly twist with water but do you still use creamy products like conditioners in your locs? I'm so afraid to use them regularly for fear of buildup but I never asked someone whose had locs for many years if it negatively affects the hair.
@Windsingerful9 жыл бұрын
That's a good question! I'd like to know, too. I used a conditioner for the first time yesterday on my 8-month old babies, because they were feeling brittle, but I was really hesitant because of the "build up" concerns. Any words of wisdom?
@saldiamond9 жыл бұрын
+Windsingerful definitely water the conditioner down if you didn't. water it down to the point where it looks like cloudy water. kinda sounds counter-intuitive but it gives your hair the moisture it needs! i'd say do a ratio of 1 part conditioner to 2 parts water.
@SheLovesLight9 жыл бұрын
Hey great question. I don't mostly twist with only water but I have in the past. I use products to Retwist. I do use conditioner. My Locs are mature so it doesn't affect my hair in terms of unraveling. In terms of buildup I don't let it sit in my hair and I also try to wash it out well. Don't live your Loc journey in fear. ;) If your hair is dry, moisturize it. You can dilute it like someone suggested below. I don't dilute it but it's a good idea if your very conscious about potential buildup. But I also don't condition with every wash. Maybe you can try a moisturizing shampoo that doesn't strip your hair after washing it. That's another alternative.
@KinkyKurlyKham9 жыл бұрын
Gotcha! Thanks
@mrhymer959 жыл бұрын
+Khambria If you use Conditioner, put it in an applicator bottle with a nozzle and fill it with water and shake it to mix. The consistency should be watery and not thick and just squeeze it on your locs. I have used a plastic cap for 15 minutes no heat.Then rinse, for me this method prevents build-up and my locs are moisturized. Everyone hair is different find out what your hair likes and stick to it. I rarely use conditioners because my hair is fine and I don't want my hair too soft. I do take hair vitamins, drink mostly and a lot of tea or water and wash my locs every week because my locs love water, and I condition my locs with coconut oil. 3 years in for me. Sorry for the long explanation, hopes this helps you or anyone reading this.

I don't understand "retwisting"? Does that mean people are undoing their twists? Wouldnt that slow down the loc process? Sorry if it seems like a dumb question
@SheLovesLight6 жыл бұрын
no, it's not undoing the twist. we say retwist but think of it as twisting. the "re" literally just means that you are twisting your hair after some time of not twisting it. when we twist our hair it tightens the locs which aids in the locking process. i hope that helps. you can search "retwist" on YT and you'll see what that process looks like.

question does the thickness of your locs effect how they feel when doing sports. i want to have locs and go back to grappling i just have this idea that locs like your side although awesome looking will keep coming out if i ponytail them for sports also i will be doing sports 4 to 5 days per week so will this cause issues?
@SheLovesLight9 жыл бұрын
+tattoodrdoke thanks for the question. First let me says that my locs are in plaits so they aren't that big. But even at that size my hair is long enough to be put in a ponytail without any coming out. Whether your locs can fit in a secure ponytail really depends on length. you can always find elastic to wrap around your loc no matter the size. I'm not familiar with grappling but if you aren't into water sports you will be fine. I will say the longer your hair gets the more it weighs so that may pose more a problem then whether you can put it in a secure ponytail. There are always headbands that you can wear to prevent your hair from falling on your face. You also need to figure out your hair type. I have thick hair so my hair will be heavier than someone with thin hair. So it really all depends on your hair type. Im far from an athlete but I haven't run into any issues with the size and length of my hair. I hope I provided some clarity.
@tattoodrdoke9 жыл бұрын
+SheLovesLight thank you the quick reply. Grappling is like freestyle olympic wrestling and judo. My hair grows thick and course. I was thinking of having cornrow for about a year to help the growth process then will lock it at 2 years growth. i have about 4 months at the minute and given my own rate of growth i cant cornrow it until 8mths growth.
