Shedding will probably happen with all of them. That's why it's best to choose pipe cleaners in a color that is close to your hair color. I use black.

What is the loop for at the end?

It makes it easier to pull them out without disturbing the curl pattern. If you don't have the loop, then you would probably unravel the whole curl.
