Local Coin Shops Explained - WORST (Red Flags) & BEST Coin Dealers

I talk to a local coin shop owner about coins shops and bullion dealers. If you are looking for a local coin shop near you or if you are wanting to know what coin shops to avoid then this is your video. Some coin dealers have massive red flags and should be avoided. On the flip side coin shops are excellent. If can be hard finding a coin store with good prices. The first thing to do is look for any bullion dealers in your area. Next go to these gold and silver dealers and talk to them. Be on the lookout for prices and also how the coin dealer is treating you. I wish we had coin shops like this in Ireland. I've only ever been able to buy bullion online, there's just nowhere like this here unfortunately. Something I really like about the US, how there's an ability to built a rapport with the shop owner and see the merchandise in person, rather than it just being a sterile transaction. Looks so much more fun!

I'm not sure this is a "red flag" but it is what causes me to drive a bit further than my local shop. I've been to a few different shops that will let me sort junk silver for specific dates. It's been a lot of fun setting my gf on some specific dates while I further discuss business with the shop owner. My local shop does not allow that. To much hassle I guess. BUT it does cause me to go to further away shops.

To be fair there could be people that have stolen coins this way. You’re digging around, it’s easy to pocket some coins. I get why that would be iffy unless you do a lot of business with them.

I hear all these stories about "my LCS wont deal with anything but gold eagles or buffalos" . Harry seems like he would give you a fair price on any gold coin and personally I think it boils down to expertise and Harrys shop has it in spades. I love that they actually LOVE coins it seems unlike many other shops.

So what about cities that only have 1 coin shop and the shop knows this. My 1 shop tends to have his prices very high. They also have the attitude as if they dont necessarily need your business. I hate the idea of having to drive 100's of miles to find a good shop.

Time out. Jackson MS has some good prices? I'm from seminary but travel country for work. In Tahoe now. Deal with the shops in Carson city. No personality in those shops. Feels like a funeral home. I'm almost to depressed to spend my cash with them

My only LCS has to buzz me in, open lobby with the owner behind thick glass. Nothing on display and you have to know what you want and ask what they have, and then ask for the price. Very fair older gentleman that knows his stuff and has decent prices, it’s just not as nice to have to ask what they have if you want to see new things. Wish I had a local shop like Harry’s.

Just a general comment---when I read people's "reviews" online, I do not automatically believe everything some random stranger writes on line. I've worked with the public in many ways, and there are a lot of miserable human beings out there who carry their bad attitude inside them or like a chip on their shoulder---and they create negativity wherever they go. Whether it's a shop or a restaurant, whatever. So, take it all with a grain of salt. This is a really nice video, though---great idea to have this discussion. I liked what Harry said about remembering that it's a hobby or leisure activity that you can hopefully have fun with! I've had a blast learning about stacking and a tiny bit of numismatics over the past 3 or so years! Your channel has been part of that, thanks Silver D~!

I agree with your statement on not trusting what stranger's write; or say. Just look at how trolls operate, on YT. However, because someone you've just met may seem to have a 'bad attitude,' it does not necessarily make them an immoral person, let alone one with criminal intent. There are those who aren't people persons, & don't relate well. Just like there are con-men, who have real charisma, & can form perceived trust quickly. Trust should be earned, not given. Those are the ones that raise red flags with me.

Great video guys. My trusted LCS is Cash for Gold in Fort Gratiot Michigan. Jeff's great. My not so local LCS is the Gold Cove 10 mile and Gratiot in East point Michigan. The older owner comes down on price. His teenage kids...not so much. Their great though ✌️

I never mind waiting when I'm in a business to do something important. Actually I use it to my advantage to see how things go with attitudes, etc, etc. This will give me an advantage for when I go to the counter, as i will be more prepared.

Harry is the best. I look at shops on Google street view and call ahead to see if they have friendly voices. I ask if they carry Morgan Dollars -- and if they say they only handle "rare coins" or "only bullion," i don't bother. In the shop a welcome greeting is important to me as a woman because all too many coin, hobby, and comics shops ignore female customers. As Harry says, product prices give people confidence that the dealer is fair to everyone. Finally, i like to pick out my own junk silver, and some shops won't allow that.

Watch for bait and switch tactics. A bullion dealer who agrees to one price and when you show up .10 minutes later, drastically changes the price is someone you never want to do business with. This happened to me.

Yeah I had a shop I walked into for the first time offer me a 580 dollar 5 dollar Indian head if I came back “next week”. Well gold went from 2250 to 2370, you think he was still gonna sell it for 580?

I'm from Redlands, CA and I used to go to a shop called Coop's Coins back in 2013-14 or so. It's a family-owned business. One woman who worked there blatantly said, "people who buy silver instead of gold are flat out stupid." I never went back.

I agree with all that was said in the video. I feel lucky living in the Chicago area because I have many LCSs to chose from as well as many monthly coin shows where there are a variety of dealers to choose from. I feel bad for the buyers living in a town where they may only have one LCS to choose from. When I first started going to LCSs I myself ran into a few bad ones before I found the one I go to now. One shop wouldn't even let me into to shop, they asked what I was looking for and wanted to sell me product thru a glass partition and a sliding drawer like a bank uses. I brought some junk silver to sell to another shop and instead of quoting me a price they kept asking me how much I was looking for like a pawn shop would do. Finally I found a shop called "Collectors Gallery" in Oak Forest, IL, run by a dealer named Sherrie and I've been going there ever since. She is very knowledgeable, friendly and fair with her prices. Sometimes you have to do a little work to find that LCS that you can trust and like going to.

I have had that "glass partition" experience too -- and one time i walked into a cold, dark brushed-steel-and-dark-grey shop looking to buy 100 Mercury dimes, and realized i was now locked in with three armed men. I though i was in a drug-deal movie. Then they told me the dimes were $2.65 each (!!!) at a time when the going rate was 19xFV ($1.90 each) and i had to ask to be let outside. It was intimidating, to say the least.

In my case I was standing in a little anteroom and was able to get out thru the outside door but i was never let into the showroom to look around. They just asked me what I needed, I paid and they gave me my product. The prices were pretty good so I did make a purchase but I felt like a criminal the way I was treated. It was my first and my last time there. The funny thing is that, I went there intending to buy much more but was never allowed into the showroom to look around and see what they had so I only bought a few things. @@ulexite-tv

Great Lakes coin and jewelry! (Near Mentor Ohio) I'm an online customer but great prices... very informative and polite on there message button on the website.... answers me even outside of business hours if I miss them by an hour or so & weekends but I try not to abuse their attentiveness willingness and kindness. I've called Harry a couple times to ask opinion on some deals I've found, Harry and Adrean both are kind and helpful.... no experience with the other guys but they seem great too

As a consumer, I think it’s better to bargain over the phone. In my personal experience I have often gotten better rates because I inquire first before I visit, when i am already in the shop I found that dealers are less inclined to give better rates because you are already in their store. But if you ask them over the phone they may be inclined to give you better deals to get you into their store.

Best advice was going to coin shows to meet local dealers. I did 2 years ago and got a tenth oz gold US for ten bucks less than online prices. Picked up several buisness cards, met a famous dealer too. Got my book signed by the gentleman who handled the famous butternut hoard of large cents. Great advice. Go to coin shoes.

I got my start stacking at Phil's Coins in Wichita Kansas many years ago. One of the things I really like about Phil is that all the employees are armed and they will escort you out to your car if you've made a large purchase. That was very reassuring to me and my elderly mother when we went there 1 day and bought quite a bit.

I wish harry's had a store here in san antonio.. I've emailed but never got any answers back. I really would like to do business with him and wish you could buy online. I understand he's a busy man.. The coin shop here, close to the house just resembled everything that Harry said was not a good coin shop and if he would just change things. By acknowledgancient mygnology when you walk in even if he's busy if he would label and put price tags. Wow, that would've made made a big difference.
