Great info. I’m a owner operator and drive a day cab. I mostly go from Vegas to Phoenix and back and average between 15k to 20k a month home every night. Once you learn how to work it the money is there.

Yes, If you have your own day cab, even without a trailer you can make good money driving local, especially in California. With all the farming there is always something in harvest and ag companies always desperate for drivers. Basically hooking up to empty trailers at the plant, driving them to the field where you drop the empty and hook to a full trailer, bring the full to the plant, drop off the full and grab an empty and head out to another field, 2 or 3, maybe more loads a day, tomatoes for a few months, then you can move on to almonds and pistachios, then carrots' year round, garlic, potatoes, corn and so on. A company driver will run a load to a field 65 miles from the plant, 130 miles round trip and get paid maybe $65 for that load, the guy that owns his own day cab and working as a contract driver will do the same load and get paid $300 and maybe get 3 loads a day, Even after paying fuel they make out pretty good. They can park their truck at the plant usually when off duty, most plants operate 24/7 so you can usually pick your shift you would like to work, if you are like me and hate the summer heat and traffic you can run the graveyard shift. Sleep in your own bed every night. No docks to deal with, all hook and drop, very little to no paperwork to deal with other than a simple trailer tag you hand over to the scale house, about as easy as trucking gets. I know guys that do this, then buy a second or third tuck and hire a couple of guys to drive those trucks for him, he gives them 25% of the load payout for each load they bring in. Wish I got into it a few years ago before used trucks prices went nuts and fuel doubled. Kind of priced out right now.

It's also seasonal with high expenses, that wage is so high for the times he doesn't work, or work much. To be clear that is the truck wage not his, he definitely makes a good cut if he keeps busy year round but don't mistake that hourly rate with employee payroll hourly
@billybob6469
@billybob6469 3 жыл бұрын
@@MrFriday83 this is exactly what I’m contemplating doing running bottom dumps. Typical hourly rate is 100-120 unless it’s per ton or per load. You can make good money if you can manage to stay busy enough that’s the key. You aim for at least 800 a day - fuel and expenses and there’s your take home. A person who needs to pay for every single oil change and lightbulb swap probably won’t make it. I can do a lot more than that and I’m still debating doing it as it still seems risky.

Local pay is nearly impossible to average out. Location is so very important! Say in Cincinnati most the local jobs I see here are right at 85k to even over 100k, with 2 days off at around 50-55 hours. We have a mega carriers grocery that hires drivers right out of school for about 80k. Where in Florida, you'll be lucky to make 60k with experience. Location location location. Owner op local you're gonna have to fall into the lucky territory to make bank consistently

After doing local owner operator tanker work for 7-8 years (Ontario, Canada), I can't see how this would be feasible at $35 hr. I was up around $46-$50/hr average. Granted I hauled heavy quad axle food grade tanker so way more fuel as the truck ran almost all day on the PTO, but ya. Price of truck payment, fuel and lets not even think about the rabbit hole of repairs you can fall into with emissions. I decided to sell the truck when I noticed that repairs on my 05 International (so pre emissions)were cutting into profit and I was basically working like a company driver but worrying what was going to happen next. Cost of a new truck when they were at $180k left me only a 1%profit margin so good luck with maintenance and repairs so I said ya no thanks. My last year one repair was $18k plus tax! I did make good money during the good years and do miss the $4500-$5000 take home every 2 weeks. That was averaging $46-50/hr though including a fuel surcharge paid % after .75. If I wasn't as disciplined saving during those good years the last 2 years would have done me in luckily I was so I could get out easily while things were still OK with $ in the bank.

650 miles a day average? That’s damn impressive if not questionable. Unless your stop is right off the freeway, I’d suggest you spend between 30min and 1 hour driving city speeds. Unless you’re running Southwest or Midwest and in the middle of the night, it’s gonna be hard to keep a constant speed of 62mph or more. And you said average which means there are days you’re running more than 650 miles a day. In any case as it was pointed out, you’re getting hosed. $250 per trip at 650 miles a day is 38.5 cents a mile. That doesn’t include all the time you spend doing other company stuff - pre trip, post trip, yard moves etc. If you have any kind of experience and a good record, I’d be looking to renegotiate my rate or better yet looking for a new job.

Does anyone one have anything else to add about the pros and cons? Some things i really want to know is how you are paid hourly, like is waiting to load and unloaded included or do they just include drive time. also if you live in a big city with heavy traffic do companies PUT a HEAVY demand ON YOU LIKE YOU MUST GET X AMOUNT OF LOADS EVERY SHIFT OR WE WILL DEDUCT YOUR PAY TYPE STUFF, FROM OWNER OPERATORS PERSPECTIVE I MEAN?

wait and load is included. i get paid to sit for an hour being loaded at Amazon. and an hour unloaded. O/O gets paid 60$ an hour at our company. Driver pays for all Fuel , insurance and expenses. comes out to around 40$ an hour after fuel and insurance. 6-12hrs a day 6 days a week.

I haul wood chips from the local/regional sawmills to the pulp mill. We get paid by the load. Depending on where we're going, determines how much the pay is and how many runs we can do. The shorter runs pay less but you can do more. The longer runs pay more but you do less. We also get paid if we have to wait for more than 45 minutes when loading or unloading.

First of all thank you for your service. Pickup and delivery is all paid hourly. As far as I know no company puts pressure on you to do a specific amount of work. But there could be exceptions. I would recommend looking outside hauling dry vans and reefers. You can make more money doing some other type of work like driving dump containers, petroleum tankers or dry bulk etc. Hopefully this helps

Great vedeo mate 👍 you living in exactly Great country for making money and working on the best you like 👍 here in Norway just can making maximum 56h. In first week and not possible pass a 90hours maximum in 2weeks!! is a shit rules for people really like driving a trucks 🤔 in USA and CANADA is another world another type of rules and much but really much easier for driving semitrucks and best roads!!👏👏👌👍 of course not possible we working there because if it's have a possibility for driving trucks up there I really enjoyed and moving to that awesome country 😀 👏 👍 anyway long haul here never ever coming back because the transport sistem is crap that's a really the transport company needs truck-drivers!! Local work they paying exactly the same like long haul!! On my case i prefer driving a long haul and I remember when I driving my self truck 👏👍 I make a great money but unfortunately I decided sold all my trucks the payment is cheaper now and much stress and all the time they push a driver for driving much faster as possible and the responsibilities of course is on the DRIVER and when the tickets coming the driver needs to paying 🤔 driving safely without accidents full attention on road no distraction and the more important is arriving on destination with everything in good conditions and no crashes and take care with the equipment 👏👌👍👍 thanks for showing this vedeo cheers from North of Norway 👍👋

@@shawnjarman9860 nice I’m looking to get into bottom dumps currently driving for someone getting experience and got some money saved already for a truck and expenses for the first 2 months. My only worry with bottoms dumps is the single axle thing kinda limits the things you can do with the truck

Have to remember these guys are around the Toronto canada area we have huge problems with new canadians (Indians ) that have ruined the trucking industry by cutting rates and running dangerous not very well maintained equipment and wrecking all over the place .It’s so bad the Government has brought in a new program called Melt and you now have to have so many hrs and training before your final test .$38-44 a hr is the going rate for local o/o dryvan or reefer i see ads all over the net

I was trucking since 1983..this is nonsense. You will ruin your health number one.Number two your family will be neglected..my daughter was raped by my nephew. Number three the people that run the company are there for 8 hours and look forward to lunch and go home.The bonus for people that do nothing is millions.SHOULD BE NUMBER ONE ...YOU RISK YOU AND OTHERS ON ICE AND SNOW WHILE BEING PAYED NOTHING..NONSENSE. STOP! STAY ALIVE GO HOME AND KISS YOUR WIFE AND KIDS.I love my trucking family.
