I have a much smaller but similar shelter in Liverpool next to my house built 1934. The government encouraged homeowners to build shelters with new houses if they could afford one as war loomed. On tv a few years back in Lancashire a guy was tipped off by a neighbour when he moved into a new house he had a hidden shelter in the front garden as this video. He uncovered a beautifully built brick arched structure which he converted into a large wine cellar!

At my old age I do remember the 1940-45 war and in Malta we have many of those shelters that the younger people do not know about. In my youth I used to walk in these shelters which were dug under the bastions built by the knights of St John in their fight against the Turkish Suleiman and Dragut Empires. I am probably the only one left where these old shelters are.

I am now 68. When i was in the fifth grade there was a house across the street that had an air raid shelter! Our teacher had heard about it and asked the owner if our class could tour it. It was really interesting to tour it. We had air raid drills monthly at my school they actually frightened me. The sound was low and slower at first, but then it would become quicker and deafeningly louder it was an ominous sound indeed. This was an interesting post thanks!

My neighbor who just bought several acres across from me told me he had found a underground shelter. So I went to check it out, when I got over there he popped his head out of a round hole about 15 inches across. I said its not very big is it and he was like no only about 5 x 8. He was in a septic tank from an old mobile home.

if you call a 1 bed flat with a storage room a large house youre a moron, its a strawman tax which is why they make landlords take it , if it was lawful why dont they do what they usually do give with one hand and take it with the other.

Storm shelter would have been my guess but then I'm in the US Midwest.. My son stepped in a hole while mowing our yard.. When we checked we found a den about 3 feet round.. we followed the tunnel to a neighbor's yard and under their porch.. They had a dog back there.. They sometimes fed here her but did nothing more.. We figured she must have been bored and did the digging as busy-work..

The way the development of WW2 bomb shelters is described here is very problematic. The government resisted the use of subways for a long time because of the risk of flooding. And people didn't just decide to build shelters spontaneously. UK culture at the time simply didn't work like that. The government micro-planned everything and the people for the most part did what they were told.

A similar experience happened at our Home a year before we moved out, we were going to replace our old concrete patio in the backgarden with a wooden plank one since the concrete was rather distasteful at the time, as as they were removing the concrete we discovered a set of concrete stairs that led to a 8x8 feet shelter, at the front of the stairs was a small empty pit that went into the earth which was used to drain any water, we decided to keep the shelter and store our belongings in it (which we later regret because of rainfall through the wooden boards causing our possessions to be damaged). But it was an unexpected sight to know we had been having meals out in our garden right above a bomb shelter.

I pulled in my friends driveway one time and the front tire of my van dropped in a hole. It turned out to be a water well that was brick lined. It was used to pump water into the boiler tanks on steam locomotives. He later found out his house was originally a train station in our small town/village before they moved the tracks like a thousand feet to the west of his house and quit using passenger train cars. Our village was originally supposed to be a big city in the 1800's then a town emerged just like ten miles down and got big quick leaving our town just a village instead of a town or city.

The homeowner will probably be hit with a fine for not having a building permit for the shelter, another fine for not having a permit for the excavation, yet another fine for the condition of his driveway, and a higher tax assessment, and back taxes and penalties, for the additional two rooms in the shelter. A few months down the road the gun and badge thugs will kick in his door for suspicion of having a grow room under his home. An American citizen, not US subject.

There's a room under my house that I've never had the desire to look into. When we got the place 8 years ago we were told that there was a dry cistern under a cap in the utility room. The former owners used it as a sort of cellar for canned veggies from their garden. I've never lifted the cement cap as I figure all I'd find in there would be cave crickets, lol. I have a small deep freezer sitting atop the cap.

this happened at my father in laws. we took a large truck into the back yard to deliver sheet metal for a project...well the wheel of the truck sunk...at first we just thought it was a old tree stump hole...but after getting the truck pulled out...we were faced with a old bomb shelter...where the sealed door collapsed under the weight of the truck..my father in law had lived there for 22 years never knowing that was buried in his back yard...it was pretty cool...he decided to just put a big peice of sheet metal over the open hole...and cover it back up..there was not really anything down in it..

Gotta love that British zoning. The thin steel doors look to have been covered with a layer of slate only 1.5" or so thick, so of course the entrance eventually collapsed. Big thing is, nobody told any subsequent owners about this huge void in their property; that's cause for legal action in the US, and I can't imagine the paperwork this guy will have to go through to "legitimize" his find as livable space, should he choose to do so.

I have been told on several occassions that my Maternal Grandad who lived in Tooting / Mitcham, in SW London dug out a space under the floorboards in their kitchen in 1938. It was the lead up to the Second World War and the fear of invasion by Hitler's troops was very real. The space he made was a place for his wife and four daughters to hide if the Nazis invaded England. People laugh at Dad's Army but there was a very real fear of Invasion. I think it was the Battle of Britain, the war in the air over England, that stopped Hitler landing on English soil long enough for us to fight back in Europe. My father fought in the Middle East throughout the Second World War, to keep England (and thereby Europe) free from dictatorship. Their determination and courage , and of the many men and women in Btitain who lived tbrough this terrible time should not be dismissed lightly.

Luton (pronounced Loo-Ton, not Lutton,) was a good target for the Germans during WW2 as it was the home to the Vauxhall car factory which was employed in the production of military vehicles and equipment, as well as being close to London. A lot of German air raids were far from "precision" attacks as often, if the target was obscured by weather or smoke, or well-defended by anti-aircraft weapons, the pilots would drop their bombs anywhere...

It is interesting, but a sad bit of history. I thought of Anne Frank and others that had to hide during war to avoid being taken or bombed. I think it would be a fitting tribute if he would turn the shelter into a virtual museum an though no one would be allowed into it, as it could collapse, they can take virtual tours via internet. Just have to make sure there is good security to keep everything safe.

Lutten is a lovely place in London. I believe it was bombed quite heavily by the Luftwoff.
