Great pointers. It truly is nice when folks in the industry help each other out. One additional tip I can add to your strapping method would be to always ensure the parking brake is set on the vehicle. If not set it will tend to rock back and forth quite a bit and stress the straps causing them to loosen. Some older vehicles have parking brakes that don't work well, but most all vehicles do. Look forward to crossing paths with you out there sometime.
@LoadMizer

True, I tend to fly over things I figure should be common sense without realizing that there are people out here that probably have never had to use a parking brake lol. My favorite are the ones that have electronic parking brakes and the battery is dead when you get to delivery. So you have to hook up a jump box just to even roll the car off.

I’m just getting stayed driving for a buddy. Starting small with a f250 and 35’ gooseneck. Any pointers? I’ve only gone on one run so far from eastern shore Maryland to north Muskegon Michigan. I used lasso straps on all 4 tires and at least one or sometimes 2 straps would come loose after a some miles down the road. One time, a strap came loose literally 5 minutes after retightening it. I’m not sure if it’s something I’m doing wrong or if that’s just something that happens after hitting bumps on the roads. Would I be better off using bonnet straps? Using axel straps and tying down from there? I’ve been constantly watching videos and researching trying to get as much info as I can. I just want to be safe out there not only for myself and my cargo, but for others out on the road. So please, if you could give some pointers I’d greatly appreciate the time. Thank you.

@LoadMizer
@LoadMizer 2 жыл бұрын
You just let it roll back down in neutral. The main things you want to make sure of is that the steering lock isn’t activated and that the brakes work. Typically you’ll need the ignition on which may require a jump box.

@Nmb25
@Nmb25 2 жыл бұрын
@G Gagoots You can average about 450-600 miles a day if you stay local if not just base it off a 10-12K a month. So 100,000 - 140,000 a year if your really hustling. I’d prolly put it at 100,000 Cummins last forever, they make semi and dump truck heavy haul motors, best engine there is for hotshot, that’s not gonna be what breaks if it does it’s rare, it’s all the little repairs that’ll get you, trade it in every 120,000 miles and after your first truck you should be able to use company credit unless you do the enterprise rental like him!

Coming from a farmer who buys a lot of fertilizer and DEF they are related. Urea a important fertilizer, is the main ingredient in DEF. To make it requires burning of natural gas. All fossil fuels have gone up in price and we feel the pinch. They expect fertilizer to be over $1000 per ton where a few years back is was a quarter the price. Its crazy how much stuff costs these days but they still expect everything to keep moving.
@LoadMizer
@LoadMizer 2 жыл бұрын
That’s interesting in the aspect of fertilizer. I almost always forget to mention that when I’m slamming places for prices it’s usually the big chains. I’m still buying def regularly in the mid $$2 range at the smaller places I fuel at. It just blows my mind that the bigger chains have jacked the price up almost $1 more than the places I buy from.

I’m an independent owner operator leased on with a company, small one, where can I sign up for fuel discounts? Any would help, and I only pay 10% for me to lease on, and an extra 5% for them to dispatch for me, not too bad, I find some of my loads, I keep that 5%. But would we all have to use a factoring company and fuel discount or can I just do that myself?
@LoadMizer

That’s actually a really good question as far as the fuel cards go. I’m not exactly sure if you could get one in your name leased into another carrier. There are options though. I’ve heard great things about the mudflap app. Since you’re the one paying for the fuel I’d most definitely go either that route or start buying your fuel with a cashback credit card. Combining those 2 things will net you your lowest fuel cost. 👍

2 tiedowns per car or 4 tiedowns per car? I know what FMCSA 393.128 says about tiedowns. Under 10000lbs "(1) Automobiles, light trucks, and vans must be restrained at both the front and rear to prevent lateral, forward, rearward, and vertical movement using a minimum of two tiedowns." I'm a 34 year trucking veteran but new to hotshot auto transport. The one who trained me how to load/unload and tiedown vehicles using 3 point strap insists, in no uncertain terms "that it must be 4 tiedowns or the law will stop you and fine you!!" This made me flinch. I look around and I see most drivers using 2 tiedowns per car. The only one I see using 4 are the OTR drivers. My work is local/regional. Equipment is a 2017 Dogde Ram 5500 and a Kaufman 3 car wedge. I really enjoy your videos. I'd like your opinion/advice on this subject. Thanks.

Generally most commercial insurance companies won’t insure you until you’re 21. If you are planning to run cdl you’d have to wait until then also but your insurance rate is determined heavily on your driving record and how long you’ve been driving. It’s not impossible but it would be very expensive for the person paying the premium.

It seems to me that the trucking industry is surrounded by blood sucking leaches every way we turn. I avoid the big truck stops like the plague. I stopped at the Loves in Macon a few weeks back and should have shot a video. All the pumps but 1 had trucks camped out but were not fueling. And I was on line inside for a while buying some BOL's because every now and then I have to do a hand written one. Came out and all the same trucks, including a hot shot whose driver was no where in sight. All those trucks in line waiting and fuming as their hours whittle away! With a 30 Ft. trailer I can get in plenty of regular gas stations. I look on gas buddy, then google maps satellite view and street view to see the access to the pumps so I know which ones have diesel and if I can get in and back out. I'm not playing the fuel card games, factoring, dispatching...none of that crap! Whew! OK, I'll get off my pedestal and ask a question. What kind of strap can I use on a 102" wide flatbed trailer for tires? I don't haul cars generally, but I do a lot of loads for United Rentals and they move F250 / F350's every now and then. I chain to the rear axle and tow hooks, but wonder if there's a lasso type that would work on a flatbed hot shot trailer. It's a PITA on the rear axle making sure you don't damage the brake lines or shocks.
