Perfect explanation. Owned a surf school too- always explained etiquette and localism on the first day to newbies. We owe it to the surf community. Good on ya!

How does one spot a local exactly?
@martincallaghan65633 ай бұрын
Locals quite often pick their targets They won’t go near the guy with the tattoos on his neck and the solid build look for someone weaker like the cowards and bullies that they are They should be able to get their waves through knowledge of their local spot not aggression There quite often the average Surfer that’s why They get angry because They don’t have the ability to compete

I've found the grumpy people ruining the vibe a lot of the are the locals, like we're all on WSL, over-competitive and douchy.. I'm pretty chill, paddle out solo sit wide, get the insiders, but I reckon its gone too far these days. respect is a 2 way street and society doesn't really have much mutual respect left anymore.. it's just mine, mine, mine.. "respecting" the locals pretty much means these days sit there and watch them or get out, they'll never just give you one (90% of the time) or welcome you.

Yeah it's a bit of a sad reality for a sport that's supposed to be purely fun. I just think the scarcity of waves is a huge problem especially in densely populated areas. Wave pools and artificial reefs are where the future lies to allow people to get their fix but the power in wavepools wears out the novelty for me pretty quickly.

For sure and I feel like I was this person at one point but travelling and interacting with different locals changes my whole perspective on everything. At one slabby waves down south some local boogers offered us to take the waves of our choice as the tide was dropping and take offs were almost impossible for us on our surfboards. After this experience I started questioning localism altogether. The only difference where we were surfing is that there were only 10 people out as opposed to 1000 at snapper.

@@Kirrapointsurfschool True, I've had a few sessions up and down the east coast and even in Bali (not on the peninsula) where its been sick, legit i reckon there's a crowd limit, once it hits the limit its out the window, no etiquette no friendly, just f off.. but before the there's a window for fun for everyone, but it's few and far between these days..

It's just population increases, bigger crowds bring more dickheads. There's always been plenty of aggressive locals around

Good overall 2 part video series. Localism can get ridiculous for example The Crews that surf North Side vs South Side of the same pier. Funny, ridiculous, but part of surf culture. I overall appreciate localism and find that I'm more bothered by it going by the wayside nowadays.

Thanks Rick, a lot of work has gone into this. So important to pick your battles. Some days I just couldn’t be bothered with the crowds and egos and other days I’m ready. There’s nothing quite like a fun peak to yourself with mates.

What a crock of shite. Localism is small-minded BS. There is no owning of the sea (unless it’s a private beach). And what makes a local? As an example, at my local beach my Dad surfed it for 40 years, and I learnt there. Moved away when I was 18, for uni and work, came back at 35, have surfed it for a few years again, am I local? It’s absolutely pathetic, it really is.

As a foreigner living in Bali for 15 years. The pecking order is Locals, expats then tourists. One time at an average Padang, a pack of about 10 Brazilians were causing chaos out there.People were screaming at them, but there was too many to do anything about it.They were challenging anyone to fight them😮.First, one of them lost a Go-pro.. karma , l asked him was it expensive, he replied yes, oh that's a shame l said, then smiled. As l was paddling in, a group of locals l knew were coming out.I worded them up on the situation.Leave it to us they said. Watching from the beach, they didn't get another wave and paddled in.😂😂

Locals run "coaching" too though and get paid to take all the brazzos out, hog the peak and make sure the tourists who aren't paying them don't get any..

@UziMusic true, but not this day.Years ago they would take Japanese tourists out. There was one tour guide who would wax people's car windows and say locals only, when Keramas was still relatively unknown, back around 2003 or 4.This fool was from Java, so calling himself a local was a laugh.

You’re the problem if you turn up with 4 or 5 of your mates and think padding out in 30min intervals is ok. Go and enjoy a surf on your own, if you want to hang out with your mates invite them over for a bbq

But I like surfing with my mates and we’re always respectful and take the waves no one wants. The issue is everyone has different opinions on what is acceptable or not. At the end of the day I’m just trying to enjoy myself in the water and doing it with mates makes it way better.

Did you watch the video? “Avoid local discipline?” The whole video I’m essentially telling people how to be respectful. Genuinely everyone wants to learn how to surf. Would you rather them paddle out with guidance or just let them all loose in the water without any idea of what they’re doing?

@@KirrapointsurfschoolI,m not sure that is aimed directly at you and neither is this... It is becoming a thing that more and more people are opening a surf school on every bay along the coastline leaving nothing sacred and often they are sent out into the water without any real guidance.

@@middleagedshred For sure, there are a lot of surf schools around that don't know much about the etiquette in the water or don't even care about it. Obviously beginner surfers aren't going to get it right all the time but if anyone has been around our lessons we are always conscious about other water users and due to the large area you can surf at Kirra (other than on a huge tide) we are out of the way 99% of the time. Luckily the local community tends to be welcoming of our surf school.
